function rep
Hi,
I've got the following code:
p <- 0.34
pb <- p*100
pr <- (1-p)*100
A <- rep(0,pb) # a vector with 34 "zeros"
B <- rep(1,pr) # a vector with 66 "ones"
Now if I type
length(A), R answer correctly 34
but if I type
length(B), R answer 65 instead of 66.
I don't understand why it happens. Can anyone help me? Thanks in
advance.

use read.table for a partial reading
Hi everyone,
I've got a matrix data with 20 variables (V1, V2, V3, ...) and 215
rows (observations). I'm interested to read only the first and second
variables using "read.table" function. How can I do?
Thanks in advance.
Paolo.

Does anyone know how I can choose the background color of the graphic
window?
Furthermore, how can I open more than a graphic-window in the same work
session?
(My platform is W2000 on PC)
Thank in advance.

Bib. reference on R
I know I've seen the answer to this question
but could not find it now:
What's the appropriate(s) general reference(s)
for the "R language and environment for statistical computing and
graphics" that should be included
in a scientific article?
Thanks

R-beta: cite R -- how?
I want to cite R for an article. What is the right thing to do?
Shall I include "Notes on R" or is there a better way?

Gentleman and Ihaka's integrity in question
It does look like Gentleman and Ihaka not only lied to the New York
Times, but also to the New Zealand Herald and who knows who else. This
is disgusting. The R programming language is the S programming
language, and Gentleman and Ihaka are not the ones who designed it.

Referencing R in journal paper?
I'm using R for calculations and plots in a statistical paper. Is
there a canonical reference to use in the bibliography? (Or is it not
common to acknowledge computer programs in journal papers?)

some questions about isolinux
Hello,
First of all, thank you for your great work !!
There are my (stupid ?) questions :
Why loading (kernel and initrd) is so slow ? Is it a limitation beacuse
using BIOS's calls ?
What can I do to accelerate that ? (if possible of course ...)
Once again, thank you very much for your absoluty amazing isolinux !
Best regards,

Citing R
I know that this general question has been asked before, but I have
encountered a picky reviewer. In the 'standard' reference for R:
R. Gentleman and R. Ihaka (1997). "The R language", In Proceedings of
the 28th Symposium on the Interface, L. Billard and N. Fisher Eds. The
Interface Foundation of North America.
is there a geographical location for the publisher and perhaps

Gentleman and Ihaka , 2000 paper question
In their paper, "Lexical Scope and Statistical Computing", the authors (
Gentleman and Ihaka ) go to great length explaining why R's use of
lexical scoping creates advantages when doing statistical computations.
If anyone has or is familiar with this paper, could they provide the
main program code for how the "newton" function would be called in their
example on page 500

R-alpha: system() ok -- is.R() function
Martin
Your revisions to my S--R compatability code suggest that tempfile() is
in R after 0.49. I don't find that to be the case. It requires code from
Friedrich Leisch which still has to be added as of 0.50 alpha3.

Citation for R
This is just a note that R would get a lot more citations if the recommended citation was an
article in a recognised journal or from a recognised publisher.
I use R in work leading to publications often, and I strongly want to give the R core team credit
for their work. However I find that I can't persuade my biological collaborators to include the
current R citation (below) in their

R, S, S-Plus, whence comes thy name?
I appeal to those entrusted with the keeping of the R flame, the S flame, and the S-Plus flame to relate a bit of history. How did S, S-Plus, and R get their names? Going from S to S-Plus appears clear, a commercial company purchased rights to S, developed a product that they wanted to indicate was related to S, but was more fully developed. This leaves me with only a rumor how S got its original

R alpha/beta naming
Read this morning
>>> R : Copyright 1998, Robert Gentleman and Ross Ihaka

So, there still is no "R beta" around....
- If I didn't know R, would I use a statistics software, if it was still
in alpha testing state?
- Is this really what we want to tell people about R?
More to the point:
I think, we could

The Origins of R
In another thread on this list, various wild allegations have been
made, relating to the New York Times article on R. I object both to
the subject line and to the content of several of the messages, and
will not repeat or quote any of that content. It smacks to me of
mischief making.
Discussion has centered around the following quote from the NY Times
article:

Muy interesante. Gracias Carlos.
Estaba indagando en los orígenes, más que nada como referencia en un
documento, pero dan ganas de probar la R 0.49.
Creo que la primera que instalé fue R 1.2.0, en un curso que dieron en
la universidad allá por el 2000. ¿y vosotros?
Saludos
