mixture distributions
Dear List,
I am looking for a possibility to fit a mixture model under R using
maximum likelihood estimation.
Venables and Ripley describe a solution working under S+ (in MASS, 3. ed.,
p. 263) which requires the D system function and deriv3. This solution does not
seem to be portable to R or at least I do not realise how.
Is there anyone who
a) knows how one could make the MASS-method run under

R CMD check: checking for undocumented objects ... WARNING
Dear List,
I have a problem building an R package using R 1.7.1 that I cannot resolve
myself. R CMD check tells me that functions I documented properly in Rd-files
are not documented and gives a TeX error at the end, altough the Rd files
check is OK. I have three fucntions, one gets through without complaining, the
other two don't. All the docu for the example data is also OK.

how to inspect content of save file
Is there a way of listing the variables contained in a file created
with the save() command other than load()ing the file?
I have a couple of rather larger files that I would rather not load ...

png and pdf : point size, font size, etc.
Hi,
I am new to this mailing list. Didn`t find the answer in the archives. But I
guess, there are people out there, who know the solution:
In an automatic script, I want to produce simple plots. First I prefer pdf,
because of scalability and standardization. But when I have too many
datapoints (say 300.000) the viewing and printing is very, very slow. So I
decided to take some bitmapped format

Where's MVA?
Hi All:
Package TSERIES is stated to depend on MVA. However, there is no MVA package to be found under the list of package sources.
Best wishes,

cmdscale in package mva (PR#1027)
Full_Name: Laurent Gautier
Version: 1.3.0-patched
OS: IRIX 6.5
Submission from: (NULL) (130.225.67.199)
Hello,
The function La.eigen, called by cmdscale in the package mva behaves an
unexplicable way (for me).
The following lines show what happened.
I tried the very same on linux, and it worked fine.
>a <- matrix(c(1,2,3,2),3,3)
>a

cross building
I was trying to learn cross building an R pcakage for windows on my linux

Vince Carey found this (thank you!).
Since the fix to the problem is not entirely obvious, I post
this to R-devel as RFC:
help(dist) says:

estimating the starting value within a ODE using nls and lsoda
All-
I am interested in estimating a parameter that is the starting value for an ODE model.
That is, in the typical combined fitting procedure using nls and lsoda (alternatively rk4), I first defined the ODE model:
minmod <- function(t, y, parms) {
G <- y[1]
X <- y[2]
with(as.list(parms),{
I_t <- approx(time, I.input, t)$y
dG <- -1*(p1 + X)*G +p1*G_b

mva :: prcomp
Dear R-list users,
I'm new to principal components and factor analysis.
I thought this method can be very useful for me to find relationships
between several variables (which I know there is, only don't know which
variables exactly and what kind of relation), so as a structure
detection method.
Now, I'm experimenting with the function prcomp from the mva package.

Help with Varimax (mva)
I am using R mainly for multiple linear regression and principal
components analyses and I am quite happy with it. I think it is a
worderful work you have done.
But I am having a problem when using Varimax for rotating loadings
obtaines from a princomp (I use the cor = TRUE option): the variance
across the components in the variables does not mantain. Let me explain
it with an example in which

mva Hclust, heatmap and plotting functions
Hi All
Not sure if this a bioconductor question or general R mailing list
so apologies if this has gone to the wrong one.................
When plotting dendrograms created by hclust you can "identify" clusters
by clicking on the graphics and returning a list of what is contained in
each cluster. However I'd like to be able to "zoom in" on specific
clusters and plot

patch to mva:prcomp to use La.svd instead of svd (PR#2227)
Per the discussion about the problems with prcomp() when n << p, which
boils down to a problem with svd() when n << p,
here is a patch to prcomp() which substitutes La.svd() instead of svd().

it doesn't get lost. )

i have a problem with PXE/UEFI Boot.
Legacy PXE Boot is working fine.
I use Dnsmasq with integrated tftp.
As Mentioned above, legacy pxe boot is working fine, tcpdump shows:

factanal {mva} question
Hello!
I have a question about the factanal function.
This function returns at the end test statistics like this:
Test of the hypothesis that 4 factors are sufficient.
The chi square statistic is 4.63 on 2 degrees of freedom.
The p-value is 0.0988
Is it possible to get the chi square statistic and the p-value as variables,
not the text on the screen? An object of class "factanal"

Intermittently stalling PAM authentication children
Hi,
we encounter a problem using PAM with privsep to manage OPIE
authentication : in some -- not really reproducible -- cases, the
child responsible of PAM authentication stalls and continues to run
even if its parent has been closed. The server is the standard RHEL 4
install, which is a 3.9p1 with backported security patches
As this children account for the 'MaxStartups' limit, new

upgrade from 3.5 -> 3.6, now I have "no backend defined for idmap"
Hi.
I am getting loads of errors "no backend defined for idmap config MYDOMAIN" after I upgraded from 3.5 -> 3.6 a couple of days ago.
I read
http://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Samba_3.6_Features_added/changed
and did what
man smb.conf
suggested:
idmap config MYDOMAIN : backend = tdb
idmap config MYDOMAIN : range = 500-1999999
yet I still receive those errors. I used

saslauth logging

Not sure whether this is the correct list to ask ... if it's not please direct me to the correct one.
Is it possible on to log a bit more detail when auth failure occurs when using saslauthd?

What I want is the IP address and if possible the incorrect password
