RODBC sqlSave / append problem (windows XP, R 2.13.2)
Dear All,
Using RODBC I have read in a (429 x 11) dataframe from Access, and would
like to append two columns of transformed data (429 x 2) to the original
table (thereby making it a 429 x 13 table). I would ideally like this to
be the same name etc as the original table in Access.
I have used the following command:

problem with looping on sqlSave()
Dear R users,
I have a follow-up question on sqlSave().
Since most of the output from the tests I use are lists, I would like to
loop to export each element of the list and append it to the sheet.
Here is what I do:
> library(RODBC)
> test <- structure(list(m = structure(c(0.090909090909091,
0.181818181818182,
0.272727272727273, 0.363636363636364, 0.454545454545455,

RODBC: sqlSave leave primary key and other columns null
I have an existing table, and I am trying to use sqlSave to append
additional rows to this database. I omit the primary key, which is a
uniqueidentifier type (MS SQL), so that the database can populate that
field. However, I get the following error:
> sqlSave( ch, result, tablename=thetablename, append=TRUE,
rownames=FALSE, colnames=FALSE )

.Call and data frames
Hello,
I'm trying to fetch a data frame through the C API,
and have no problem doing this when all columns
are numbers, but when there is a column of
strings I have a problem. On the C-side the
function looks like:
SEXP myfunc(SEXP df),
and it is called with a dataframe from
the R side with:
.Call("myfunc", somedataframe)
On the C side (actually C++ side) I use code
like this:

How to use `[` without evaluating the arguments.
Hello R-devel,
I am currently attempting to implement an API similar to data.table wherein single bracket subsetting can accept an unquoted expression to be evaluated in the context of my object.
A simple example from the data.table package looks like this:
DT <- data.table(col1 = c('a', 'b', 'c'), col2 = c('x', 'y', 'z'))
DT[col1 ==

ACL/Excel file issue
Hi,
I've just upgraded an organisation from 3.0.23a to 3.0.25b on CentOS.
Everything went fine excpet they're having an issue with Excel files
going RO which perhaps is related to acls.
$ ls foo.xls
-r--rwxr--+ 1 mr.bogus staff 101376 Apr 8 12:59 08-04-04 foo.xls
and getfacl gives:

RODBC, Excel, and data truncation when writing
Hi,
I am hoping to use the RODBC package to write a dataframe to an Excel .xlsx
file. The dataframe contains at least one field with character elements
that exceed 255 bytes, which appears to be the cell width limit in Excel.
Below is example code and the warning message received:

RODBC: follow up
Hi Michael,
Here is the result of my first testing:
(0) Dr. Watson
Sorry, I should have given a more precise description: by default in R
exists a function with the name 'table', if you use this name as in
odbcPrimaryKeys(0, table)
a Dr. Watson occurs, because table does not give a table name.
However, it is always a good idea to prevent Dr. Watsons, even if it is
triggered by a

Vignette problem and CRAN policies
Hello, All:
The vignette with the sos package used "upquote.sty", required for R
Journal when it was published in 2009. Current CRAN policy disallows
"upquote.sty", and I've so far not found a way to pass "R CMD check"
with sos without upquote.sty.
I changed sos.Rnw per an email exchange with Prof. Ripley without
solving the problem; see below. The

I have an unordered vectors of names, say:

each of which have an id in a table in my db. I need to convert the names to their corresponding ids.

Hello all,
I have a data file table.txt which i have attached. I am trying to pass the
columns as arguments to a function "totnorm" where i am displaying a total
normalization plot. The function is given below:
totnorm<-function(x,y){scale<-sum(x)/sum(y);xlab<-colnames(x);ylab<-colnames(y);x1<-x[[1]];y1<-scale*y[[1]];plot(x1,y1,xlab=xlab,ylab=ylab,col=6,

sqsSave() test using Test.R script returning error suggesting no values upon "insert"
Hi.
I attempted to use RODBC and decided to execute all the tests provided in "Test.r" under the unpacked package RODBC folder.
Beginning with the following:

library(MASS)

hills <- hills[1:15,]
row.names(hills)[12] <- "Dollar ('$')"
set.seed(1)

RODBC and Very long field lengths
I'm having a small problem using RODBC. I'm trying to retrieve a string
from a very long memo field (512*20*9=9360 characters = 74880 bytes) in
an MSAccess database.
It appears that RODBC set a maximum buffer size for a single column of
65535 bytes.

RODBC and Oracle
I just joined and though I did quickly read the posting guide it is quite possible not going to be a perfect posting. For one I tried to figure out how to reply to an existing message on the topic. I gave up but figured I keep at least the same subject.
In a gist I get an empty data frame after issuing the following select query from R 2.9.1 to Oracle 10.2.0.1 64bit via RODBC 1.3 and Oracle 11g

New Variable from Several Existing Variables
I am new to R, but have been using SAS for years. In this transition period,
I am finding myself pulling my hair out to do some of the simplest things.
An example of this is that I need to generate a new variable based on the
outcome of several existing variables in a data row. In other words, if the
variable in all three existing columns are "Yes", then then the new variable

Is there a bug in CrossTable (gmodels)
Library gmodels include a function CrossTable that is useful for
crosstabulation. In the help, it is indicated that one can call this
function as CrossTable(data), were data is a matrix. However, when I try
to use this option, it doesn't help. Any idea? Is there a bug?
Thanks for your help.

RODBC and datetimes
I've got a data.frame I'm trying to insert into a database table in an
ms sql server instance using RODBC. When I save a table using
nothing but character and numeric columns things work fine. However,
when I attempt to add another column of type POSIXct to the data.frame
and redefine the table to incorporate the new column (in the
DB),attempting to push the table to the DB using
