SAS Export datasets alfalfa.xpt and test.xpt
The above came with V1.2.3, but don't seem to be included with V1.3.0. When I upgraded R, I assumed they would also come with the new version, so didn't save them elsewhere. Could someone please email them to me, or tell me where I could get hold of them? Many thanks in advance. ****************************************************************************************** * Dr.

Updating Packages (was Re: Reading of a large SAS Export dat
It was suggested to me that, although I've installed version 1.3.0 of R, the contained foreign package won't be the most recent. Hence, it's worth using update.package(). However, when I did that, I got the following log file: > options(CRAN="http://cran.us.r-project.org/") > update.packages() trying URL

Reading large SAS dataset in R
Hi all, I have a large (approx. 1 GB) SAS dataset (test.sas7bdat) located in the server (“R:/” directory). I have SAS 9.1 installed in my PC and I can read the SAS dataset in SAS, under a windows environment, after assigning libname in "R:\" directory. Now I am trying to read the SAS dataset in R (R 2.12.0) using the read.ssd function of the “foreign” package, but I get an error

read.ssd {foreign} (Reading a permanent SAS dataset into an R data frame)
I just downloaded and installed R 1.6.1 on my Windows machine where I also run SAS. I want to use the 'read.ssd' function so that I can convert a permanent SAS data set into an R data frame. I downloaded and installed the package 'foreign' on my machine, which includes the 'read.ssd' function. I read the instructions, and followed the example closely in the R

It declares an illegal operation, and produces the error messages reproduced below (slightly different in each version).

R/S and large datasets - Database access (also Re: SAS and S/R)
A consensus seems to emerge : R would excel to exploratory work on small/middle-sized datasets, while SAS would be able to munch much larger datasets. However, I see the "size" problem as a red herring. The objects that have to stay "in core" are usually much smaller than the dataset. For example, for problems involving fixed-effects linear models, you need only some

Another question, unfortunately. . . .(Installing "foreign"/trying to import/export SAS files)
I have downloaded R--no problem there. Unfortunately, I have run into a second problem. I am trying to use read.ssd and then read.xport (to get a SAS data set). I have imported the package "foreign" according to instructions ( options(CRAN="http://cran.us.r-project.org/") and install.packages("foreign") ), but when I do so and then use either read.ssd or read.xport I
