Installation behind a proxy
Hi all,
I was a client site today on another project and we started talking about
RoR. I wanted to show it in action, so I downloaded the one-click Ruby
installer for Windows and then tried to do "gem install Rails
-include-dependencies". After a time-out period I received the following
error:
ERROR: While executing gem.(Gem::RemoteSourceException)

I am using:
if @post.empty?
render_text "Post does not exist."
end
But it gives me this error:
NoMethodError in Posts#view

However, if the method list empty? apears and stuff so I am confused.

looking for radrails devs
I just got an email update on a radrails bug that I submitted a while back...
Unfortunately, it''s just stupid spammers.
So, I tried to go to the radrails trac to delete the spam or at least report it, and their
trac is puking python errors (including environment information) all over the page! I
can''t seem to get to any pages with any contact info, so I''m trying

script/plugin install fails
Running script/plugin install
svn://rubyforge.org/var/svn/laszlo-plugin/tags/openlaszlo fails,
returning the help information for the "export" command:
export: Create an unversioned copy of a tree.
usage: 1. export [-r REV] URL [PATH]
2. export [-r REV] PATH1 [PATH2]
etc...
Has anyone encountered this before?

Radrails - Quick (if misplaced?) question...
My apologies if this is the wrong place for this but...it should be really simple.
When I use a Generator in Radrails, nothing happens. I (believe) I have properly set the path to Ruby and still nothing. And, it doesn''t seem there is an error log to further diagnose what is happening.
I am using 0.5.3 on Windows. Am I missing something obvious?
As a P.S., is anyone particularly fond of

RadRails 0.6 out
Since RadRails 0.6 is out (see http://www.radrails.org/ ), I have made a
"celebratory illustrated tutorial" on how to use the Eclipse update function
to do the upgrade from within Eclipse (I found the process a tad confusing):

Compress css files with Rails
Hi,
I work on a website with many css files. To improve the performance of
the site I would to merge all my css file into one on the production
site.
I know I could do this using plugins, but I heard it is possible
natively within rails.
Does someone know what it is?

Rad Rails?
Hi,
I''ve just now started learning Ruby on Rails. Someone told me that I
should get RadRails to use as my IDE. RadRails.org seems to be dead
now. Has something bad happened? Or do I just have my URL wrong? Is
there another good Rails IDE? I''m developing on windows right now.
Thanks!

RadRails problems - any ideas
Hi, I''ve followed the rad rails instructions for importing a project and
have two issues.
First my console tab shows "Console is not available" I don''t know if that''s
significant or not, yet.
Second, I''ve created a WebBrick server, but it doesn''t respond when I try to
start it from withing RadRails. There''s no error shown.

Battle of Namings: stylesheet_link_tag vs link_to_javascript
Link helper namings counterintuitive in an environment where convention over
configuration prevails:
<%= link_to_javascript ''myscript'' %>
<%= stylesheet_link_tag ''mystyle'' %>
A simple def in ActionView::Helpers::AssetTagHelper would fix things in a
nice, backward-compatible way, such that:
<%= link_to_javascript

Referring to static resources
What is the "right" way to refer to static resources (i.e. files in
./public)?
The problem with the obvious way (hard-coded root, such as
href="/stylesheets/myapp.css") is that it doesn''t survive ProxyPass and
some other such things.

rake aborted when adding a column
I''m having a silly little problem with migrations. All I''m
trying to do is to add an SSN column to my Employees table. I
generated a migration which looks like:
class AddSsn <
ActiveRecord::Migration
def self.up
add_column :employees,
:ssn,
:string
end
def self.down
remove_column :employees,
:ssn
end
end
When I run this, however, I get:

Read data from Excel
A client of mine has a ton of data stored in Excel spreadsheets. I''m
building a web application for her (backed by a real db of course) and want
to import all that data. Is there a library available to read data from
Excel? Is there an easy way to upload the spreadsheets and then read the
data?
Thanks,

Interesting ActiveRecord vs Hibernate article
For those haven''t seen it yet, Patrick Peak has an interesting
article at the Server Side (www.theserverside.com)
discussing the differences between the Hibernate (www.hibernate.org) peristence
framework and ActiveRecord. The article can be found here: http://www.theserverside.com/articles/article.tss?l=RailsHibernate .

Rails on Tomcat or JBoss?
Hi all,
The Rails book talks about running Rails under Apache, but is there a
(relatively) easy way to deploy it to either Tomcat or JBoss? Is the CGI
servlet the only option?
Thanks,
Ken

Tip, may even be useful
Here''s something that caused me a couple of hours of head-scratching
today:
Apparently, if your model doesn''t derive from ActiveRecord, it is NOT
reloaded for each operation in the development environment.
I was working with something that uses a single model per session, and
stores its data in the session. I kept wondering why I didn''t see my
changes. Finally, I

How do you create a tree strucutre with ActiveRecord
I want to build an application that has the concept of administrative
domains. What I mean by this is that administrators have access to
different data, based on what domains they are a member of. The domain
strucutre is hierarchical. Here is an example:
- MLB
- AL
- East
- Yankees
- Red Sox
...
+ Central
+ West
- NL
+ East
+ Central
+ West
