about strsplit
Hello,
I want to split a string including a "+" but
it seems there is no effect because of this special character.
Just to explain, I convert frequencies to midi notes (external program)
but I don't want to keep
information about quater-tone!

cophenetic matrix
Hello,
I analyse some free-sorting data so I use hierarchical
clustering.
I want to compare my proximity matrix with the tree
representation to evalute the fitting. (stress, cophenetic correlation
(pearson's correlation)...)
"The cophenetic similarity of two objects a and b is defined as the
similarity level at wich objects a and b become members of the same
cluster during the course of

Question about mesurating time
Hello ,
Is there any function to mesurate the duration of a procedure (like tic
and toc in matlab) ?
Tic
Source("procedure.R")
Toc
(toc is the duration between the execution of tic and the execution of
toc)

hclust question
Dear all,
I have a question with regard to the use of hclust. I would like to be
able to specify my own distance matrix instead of asking R to compute
the distance matrix for me. It is computationally easier for me this
way. My question is: How can I get hclust to accept this?
Thanks,

Grid lines?
Hi,
I'm new to R and I wonder if it's possible to have grid lines on a graph?
Thanks.

Little question
Here I got a function :
f<-function(x){
res<-list()
res$bool=(x>=0)
res$tot=x
return(res)
}
I want that a=res$bool and b=res$tot
I know that a possible solution is :
Result=f(x)
a=Result$bool
b=Result$tot
But I don't want to use the variable Result.
I'd like to write directly something like [a,b]=f(x).
Is it possible ?
Thank you

Precision for a former question*
I got many answers to the question I asked below , and I thank you all.
Several of you told me to use ->> but told also that "it is not a
recommendable way of items manipulating in R".
I don't really understand what it exactly means :
1) does it mean it's not a very good way of programming , a
dangerous way of programming because the variable a can be modified ? ,
etc

Puppetmaster with stored configs leaks file descriptors on CentOS 5
Hi folks,
When I enabled stored configs on my puppet master, it began keeping lots
of open connections to the MySQL server (as far as I understand it
opened one connection for each client run and never closed them).
I set up the server to close idle connections after 5 minutes. Now the
database server does close the connections but the puppet master keeps
them in CLOSE_WAIT state and eventually

Evaluating an expression
Hi,
I want to create a data frame similar to the following, but greatly scaled up:
df <- data.frame(aaa= c("a","b","c"), integer(3), integer(3))
names(df)[2:3] <- paste("var",1:2,sep="")
which yields
aaa var1 var2
1 a 0 0
2 b 0 0
3 c 0 0
I would not relish having to paste 'integer(3)' 5000 times :(

transposing data
Hi. I have repeated measures data of the form where each observation
is a trial, and trials are grouped by subject, and variables encode
whatever level of a factor was present during that trial, and the
dependent variable is response time (RT). I want to transpose the
data to a form suitable for MANOVA such that there is one observation
per subject and RT is recoded across many

overlay of two sets of boxplots
Hello,
I am new to R and currently have the following problem:
I have successfully loaded my data in R which consists of two numeric columns (LI_F and female) and one character column (Strain). So far I can plot two different set of boxplots for each of the numeric columns plotted by the groups of the character column and the commands look like that:

About adding bricks ...
Hi @all,
I've created a Distributed-Replicated Volume consisting of 4 bricks on
2 servers.
# gluster volume create glusterfs replica 2 transport tcp \
gluster0{0..1}:/srv/gluster/exp0 gluster0{0..1}:/srv/gluster/exp1
Now I have the following very nice replication schema:
+-------------+ +-------------+
| gluster00 | | gluster01 |
+-------------+ +-------------+
| exp0 | exp1 |
