bootstrap: stratified resampling
Dear All, I was writing a small wrapper to bootstrap a classification algorithm, but if we generate the indices in the "usual way" as: bootindex <- sample(index, N, replace = TRUE) there is a non-zero probability that all the samples belong to only one class, thus leading to problems in the fitting (or that some classes will end up with only one sample, which will be a problem

Bootstrapping on R
Does R have a bootstrap command like SPlus, or do we have to form our own code if we want to do bootstrapping in R? Spider diagrams
Hi, I am trying to create what are called "spider diagrams" in the geochemical literature using R. A spider diagram is basically a plot of the atomic number versus the concentration on a log scale. Lines are drawn from each atomic number for each sample. Right now, my data frame looks like: SAMPLE SITE V3 LA.NASC LAATNUM CE.NASC CEATMNUM 1 1A:001

GLS models - bootstrapping
Dear Lillian, I tried to estimate parameters for time series regression using time series bootstrapping as described on page 434 in Davison & Hinkley (1997) - bootstrap methods and their application. This approach is based on an AR process (ARIMA model) with a regression term (compare also with page 414 in Venable & Ripley (2002) - modern applied statistics with S) I rewrote the code

Boostrap p-value in regression [indirectly related to R]
Hello All, Despite my preference for reporting confidence intervals, I need to obtain a p-value for a hypothesis test in the context of regression using bootstrapping. I have read John Fox's chapter on bootstrapping regression models and have consulted Efron & Tibshirani's "An Introduction to the Bootstrap" but I just wanted to ask the experts here for some feedback to make

GLS models - bootstrapping
Hello, I am have fitted GLS models to time series data. Now I wish to bootstrap this data to produce confidence intervals for the model. However, because this is time series data, normal bootstrapping is not applicable. Secondly, 'tsboot' appears to only be useful for ar models - and does not seem to be applicable to GLS models. I have written code in R to randomly sample blocks of

Hello, I downloaded R today because I was told it has very good bootstrapping abilities. What I need to do is to program it (or use an existing program) to bootstrapping test for multimodality using nonparametric kernel density estimates as proposed by Efron and Tibshirani (1993). If anyone can get me started, I will be immensely grateful. Thanks. Sangeeta

Least Angle Regression packages for R
Least Angle Regression software: LARS "Least Angle Regression" ("LAR") is a new model selection algorithm; a useful and less greedy version of traditional forward selection methods. LAR is described in detail in a paper by Brad Efron, Trevor Hastie, Iain Johnstone and Rob Tibshirani, soon to appear in the Annals of Statistics. The paper, as well as R and Splus packages, are

Use of geometric mean for geochemical concentrations
A statistical question, not specific to R. I'm asking for a pointer for a source of definitive descriptions of what types of data are best summarized by the arithmetic, geometric, and harmonic means. As an aquatic ecologist I see regulators apply the geometric mean to geochemical concentrations rather than using the arithmetic mean. I want to know whether the geometric mean of a set of

Efron's locfdr package - a component missing
Hello: Could you possibly help me. In Efron's 2004 paper "Selection and Estimation ..." it was mentioned that so-called effect density estimate, denoted by g1(mu) was included in the locfdr package. However, I can't find it in the description of the package. Any suggestions? Sincerely, Nik -- View this message in context:

bootstrapping lambda values from projections matrices
Dear all, I'm working with a population projections matrix model from demographic data. The dominant eigenvalue of the matrix is the growth rate of the population (lambda). I would like to estimate confidence intervals for the lambda values with bootstrap. The function for calculating the eigenvalue I wrote like this: mat.fun <- function(d,i){ mat<-matrix(c(0,

Bootcov for two stage bootstrap
Dear users, I'm trying to implement the nonparametric "two-stage" bootstrap (Davison and Hinkley 1997, pag 100-102) in R. As far as I understood, 'bootcov' is the most appropriate method to implement NONPARAMETRIC bootstrap in R when you have clustered data (?). I read the 'bootcov' manual but I still have a few questions: 1 - When the variable 'cluster' is

Resampling Stats software
Hi, I am new to R (I have most of my experience in SAS and SPSS). I was wondering if anyone has used both Resampling Stats and R, and could comment on strengths/relationships. Also, I have no clue on how to do the various examples from the book "Resampling: The New Statistics" in R. Can anyone give me some possible starting points? Or websites/books? Thanks, Brandon
