(off topic) Re: Notepad
The discussion on editors prompts the following comments.
1) One reason I put "Kickstarting R" together is that most people come
to R as migrants; they already have an editor, a browser, etc. that they
know how to use. Learning one thing is easier than learning many (Jon
Baron's comment on interference is most relevant).
2) NotePad isn't a great editor, but it will serve for

r editors
Hi ,
I am programming on a windows system and have problems
using notepad which is my main editor. Each time I try
to open the editor from the R IDE, R crashes.
So I always have to copy my codes from notepad and
paste in R to run them.
CAn someone tell me if I am doing anything wrong or is
there a better editor(freeware) which I could get.
thanks

ESS with Xemacs? [vs. Emacs, slightly off topic]
I decided to try out Xemacs instead of Emacs in Linux (RH 7.2).
After doing lots of configuration of Xemacs, I finally discovered
a major problem.
With Emacs, when I use R, I start Emacs twice (at least), in
different viewports, once as
emacs -f R
and once as
emacs myfile.R
Then I try commands in the first one, and, when they work (which
isn't very often), I cut the command with C-w,

R GUI for Linux?
Hello all,
I noticed that both Windows and OS X version of R have a GUI
(Rconsole). Is there a GUI for Linux? I'm running Debian on which
the CLI for R works just fine.

Emacs & ESS under Windows
After the discussions about appropriate editors under Windows to use with
R, I have managed to install Emacs, XEmacs, and ESS under WinNT 4.0, and
these work fine. It's not necessary to compile anything to use R with ESS,
just to install Emacs and ESS, and do a few modifications in some files.
XEmacs is also easy to install but apparently ESS cannot run with it

Hi all,
I am running R 2.0.1 under Windows XP in German. I configured my path as
follows:
C:\Programme\R\rw2001\bin;C:\Programme\xemacs-packages\lib-src\;C:\Programme\XEmacs-21.4.13\i586-pc-win32
I can not start R proccess or ESS from within XEmacs. What is going wrong?
I can not start S. M-x S gives "no matching"
How can I configure XEmacs for STATA 8?
Thanks for your help.

ess in Windows (newbie Q)
I'm a rank beginner with R, and I'm stumped at how to get it to work
with Xemacs under Windows XP. I'm afraid there are some VERY basic
questions I have here. Yes, I did read
http://ess.r-project.org/Manual/readme.html.
Both R and Xemacs are installed and working. The current ess files are
installed in a subdirectory of my Xemacs directory. I added the R bin
directory to my

A hint to start ESS-xemacs
I'm trying to use ESS & xemacs under debian linux testing and KDE.
My problem is that I didn't find any document in the internet explaining a
**step by step** session with R and xemacs.
The (wrong) procedure I follow (to no avail!) is:
1) I start R in a terminal window;
2) I start xemacs and open a file with the extension .R (test.R);
3) I issue M-x R RET and I can see an Rd new

using tcltk in R under ESS/XEmacs on Windows
Sorry for the cross-post. Not sure where the problem is...
A while back I posted an R function to R-help:
cd <- function (dir = tclvalue(tkchooseDirectory()), saveOld = FALSE,
loadNew = TRUE) {
stopifnot(require(tcltk))
if (saveOld)
save.image(compress = TRUE)
setwd(dir)
rm(list = ls(all = TRUE, envir = .GlobalEnv), envir = .GlobalEnv)

Using XEmacs and ESS with R for MS/Windows
I've been working on a document describing the use of XEmacs and ESS with R
for Windows users, along with configuration files that are meant to make
things simple for Windows users. This was initially intended for my
students, but with recent discussions of Windows (and other) editors on the
the R-help list, I thought that I'd make the material more widely available.

PLEASE IGNORE PREVIOUS: How to configure ess-5.2.0beta3-1.i586.rpm, Xemacs and SuSE 9.0?
Please ignore (and excuse) my previous message - it is incomplete.
I'm trying to get R and ESS to work with Xemacs on a newly installed
SuSE 9.0 system. Is some setup required beyond installing the rpms?
I've installed the Xemacs packages from SuSE

Embarrassingly naive question regarding graphics on Mac OS X
I am having trouble saving graphs. Using the Aqua interface (which is not
my preferred interface), I have no problems plotting a graph, adding
additional lines, points, references, etc., and then saving it to a file
using, for example, the dev2bitmap command. I have found that, running R
with Xemacs+ESS under X11 (which I prefer over Aqua), this is not possible.
I can either send the graph to a

ESS 5.1.19 w/Xemacs 21.4.6
Probably wrong group for this, but a quick question. I've just switched
from emacs to Xemacs. In reinstalling ESS 5.1.19 I keep getting the
following error when loading Xemacs:
"Error in init file: Symbol's function definition is void: w32-using-nt"
I've debugged the ess-site.el file, which is where the error originates
from. The line causing the difficulty is:

Installation of R, Sweave, ESS and [X]Emacs on Windows?
I'm trying to get R, Sweave, ESS and XEmacs or emacs all installed and
working together on my Windows XP Pro system. I've got R 2.6.0 working
just fine, installed from the R Windows installer. I also have
CYGWIN_NT-5.1 with XEmacs 21.4 working okay. Can anyone point me to any
documentation on how to bring these together so that R code typed in
Xemacs can be run in R? I found the ESS

ESS and Emacs
I have been using the document written by John Fox titled
Sn Introduction to ESS + XEmacs for Windows
Users of R.
It's a very nice document and
I went through it carefully but I got
an error when I finished it and launched XEmacs.
The error is "cannot open load file : ess-site".
So, I did more investigation
and it seems like there is a folder

Mac Text editors
Hi everyone,
I've recently moved from using a windows machine to a Mac (some might call it an upgrade, others not?I'll let you be the judge). Once I started using Notepad ++ on my windows machine, I really began to like it. Unfortunately, I'm not sure what the free text editor options are for the Mac (Notepad ++ is windows only). I've dabbled with Linux before and used
