Histograms by two factors
Hi
I am trying to print out means, STDs and histograms under two sets of factors. I can manage it for one set - see below but not for two sets. That is, I want ot print out the mean STD and Histogram for each ITEM code within each DELIVERABLE code. In addition I can only get to view the histogram for the last item. How do you get R to stop overriding the histogram for eg level 1 for factor 1

summing "transfers"
I have a dataframe from an On-Board Survey with weights ("expwgt") and variables for up to 8 used lines: VEH1 through VEH8. The lines are labeled "MT-..1" through "MT-902". I want to know how many transfers there are between MT-802 and MT-901. That is, when one of them is VEHx and the other is VEHx+1 or VEHx-1
E.g. {VEH1 = MT-802 AND VEH2 = MT-901 } plus {VEH2 =

bug in CrossTable (package:gregmisc) (PR#2480)
Full_Name: John Hendrickx
Version: 1.6.0
OS: Windows 98
Submission from: (NULL) (137.224.174.216)
CrossTable in the "gregmisc" package fails when the fisher.exact test produces
an error (I suspect this is because the number of cases is too large). This can
be fixed using "FTt <- try(fisher.test(t, alternative = "two.sided"))" or by
making the test optional.

(multiway) percentage tables
R has amazing capabilities, but percentage tables are a weak spot
IMHO. There's prop.table but that's rather unwieldly, especially for
multiway tables. CrossTable by Marc Schwartz in the gregmisc library
makes percentage tables a breeze but is limited to two-way tables. So
I decided to try my own hand at writing an R-function that would make
it easy to produce nicely formatted percentage

Puzzled by what Rprof is telling me
I am using Rprof() to help find ways to improve performance.
I found a function whose total seconds and self seconds were large. I
replaced it with something else. The something else had a small
number of total seconds and self seconds. But the total time did not
decrease.
I don't understand how that could be, and would appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks

DVD software "this projector file is corrupt!"
Excuse me, I have not defined the problem with clarity.
My DVD is a software to see sum demonstrations of techniques (aikido) in 3 dimensions. When the DVD was in my computer, it made a copy of the software DVD on my hard disk . So, after, I can watch at any time without the DVD software in my computer.
To do that I had to introduce a code (I bought the DVD).

modifying ftable to allow percentages (wishlist) (PR#2606)
Full_Name: John Hendrickx
Version: 1.6.2
OS: Windows XP
Submission from: (NULL) (80.126.78.108)
(This is not a bug report but a request to add a feature to future versions of
R. Hope this is an appropriate place).
I'd like to suggest adding an option to ftable to allow percentages. It would be
easy to do and backwards compatible. Percentage tables are useful in educational
contexts, whereas

save print survfit object to data frame
Hello, I have estimated a survival model with six strata:
>model.b <-
survfit(Surv(time=start.tijd,time2=eind.tijd2,event=va)~strata(product.code)
,
data=wu.wide)
I would like to save the output of
>print(model.b,print.n="records",show.rmean=FALSE)
in a dataframe so that I can export it later. How do I do this? Note that
summary(model.b) gives an error:

models for square tables
I've posted a sample file for estimating loglinear models for square
tables (mobility models) at http://www.xs4all.nl/~jhckx/mcl/R/
Comments and suggestions are welcome.

immortal connections
I have several data input functions that include a construct like
the following:
indat <- function(stuff) {
[...]
awkp <- paste("awk ...yada yada...", stuff, etc.)
scan(pipe(awkp),quiet=TRUE)
}
I use these functions a lot, and as I do, a lengthening list of
closed, but undestroyed, connections accumulates. Ultimately this
appears to stuff things up and cause

SPSS, social science majors, and R
Hi Roland and folks:
Roland's and Susanna's comments were very interesting. I think we need to keep in mind that unlike SPSS, R is more than a statistical package. It's a tool. SPSS does indeed make life easy, particularly for data preprocessing (or data "cleaning"), something that is perhaps not advisable using R (the current versions). Also, I think it's a myth that R

write.table read.table with Dates
I've found several similar issues with write.table/read.table
with Dates on this list, but trying to follow this advice I still
get an error.
First, I read in data from several files, constructing several date/time
columns using ISOdatetime

mcl models, percentages
I've put two packages for R on my home page at
http://www.xs4all.nl/~jhckx/R/. The "pcnt" package is for multiway
percentage tables. I've posted a first effort called "ctab" on this
group and a request for enhancing "ftable" with percentages on the
wishlist.
The "mcl" package is for estimating multinomial logistic models using

by() and CrossTable()
I am attempting to produce crosstabulations between two variables for
subgroups defined by a third factor variable. I'm using by() and
CrossTable() in package gmodels. I get the printing of the tables first
and then a printing of each level of the INDICES. For example:
library(gmodels)
by(warpbreaks, warpbreaks$tension, function(x){CrossTable(x$wool,
x$breaks > 30,

R search engine and Mozilla
Not really an R question but I'm hoping someone can help me out. I'm
having problems with the R help page "The R language" and Mozilla 1.3
with the Java 2 runtime environment 1.4.1_02 under Windows XP. The
problems occur on the "Search Engine & Keywords" page. I can open two
links, but after that links aren't recognized.
The problem seems to be javascript

SAS, SPSS Product Comparison Table
Hi All,
My paper "R for SAS and SPSS Users" received a bit more of a reaction
than I expected. I posted the link
(http://oit.utk.edu/scc/RforSAS&SPSSusers.pdf) about 12 days ago on
R-help and the equivalent SAS and SPSS lists. Since then people have
downloaded it 5,503 times and I've gotten lots of questions along the
lines of, "Surely R can't do for free what [fill in

SPSS data import: problems & work arounds for GSS surveys
I'm using R 2.8.1 on Ubuntu 8.10. I'm writing partly to ask what's
wrong, partly to tell other users who search that there is a work
around.
The General Social Survey is a long standing series of surveys
provided by NORC (National Opinion Research Center). I have
downloaded some years of the survey data in SPSS format (here's the

Using R in a university course: dealing with proposal comments
Hi All,
I am scheduled to teach a graduate course on research methods in
health sciences at a university. While drafting the course proposal, I
decided to include a brief introduction to R, primarily with an
objective to enable the students to do data analysis using R. It is
expected that enrolled students of this course have all at least a
formal first level introduction to quantitative methods

re ad.spss (foreign) conflict with SPSS 17 files.
SPSS seems to have changed its default datafile format, resulting in issues
for read.spss(). In Windows this results in a warning, in Debian the import
completely fails:

read.spss Error reading system-file header
Hi Jake,
I had and still have got the same problem. There were two columns in the
data frame which contain just missing values. When I deleted those the
impord seemed to work, but there is still a warning message.
Warning message:
C:\test.sav: Unrecognized record type 7, subtype 13 encountered in
