names(dist(mat)) gives NULL in R 2.1.0
Dear list,
I do not know if this is a bug.
Let's suppose mat is a matrix derived from this code:
> x<-rnorm(10)
> y<-rnorm(10)
> names(x)<-LETTERS[1:10]
> names(y)<-LETTERS[1:10]
> mat<-cbind(x,y)
Now in R 2.0.1 I have:
> names(dist(mat))
"A" "B" "C" "D" "E" "F" "G" "H"

Error on X11 or on R?
Dear list,
I am using R version 2.0.0 under Linux Mandrake 10.0. I have installed R
by using the rpm file on CRAN.
By executing the following code, I have this output (the text file
formaggio.txt is attached):
> dati <- read.table("formaggio.txt", header=TRUE)
> plot(dati)

iraq statistics - OT
I came across this one:
http://www.nysun.com/article/32787
which says that the violent death rate in Iraq (which presumably
includes violent deaths from the war) is lower than the violent
death rate in major American cities.
Does anyone have any insights from statistics on how to
interpret this?

Max/Min w/ Non-linear constraints
Hi all,
How do people do non-linear constrained maximization in R? If in C, are
there any packages people would recommend as being particularly easy to
interface/hack to work with R? And if not, does anyone want me to?

Which.min bug?
Hi,
I'm not sure this is a bug, so I thought I'd bounce it off the help group
first.
I had a dataset which I was subsetting, and occasionally I get an empty
subset. If I don't check for emptiness and go straight to a which.min call
on the subset, the program gets a big negative number back.
One-line Example:
> which.max(NULL)
[1] -2147483647
This caused an indexing

Apply command on vectors
Hi all,
I keep running into a small problem in my programming, and I'm sure there's
an elegant way around it...
I often want to use apply() on a matrix with a variable number of columns. It
works just fine unless the number of columns is one, in which case the matrix
becomes a vector, and apply() complains. Example below:
-----------------------------
a.matrix <- matrix(rnorm(6),

how to print error message in batch mode
Dear list,
I am using R in batch mode:
$ R -q --no-save < prova > output
the input file "prova" has these commands:
data(USArrests)
x<-USArrests
hist(x)
of course, the command hist(x) produces an error. The error message is:
Error in hist.default(x) : `x' must be numeric.
Is there the possibility to save this error massage in the "output" file?

r online
Hi,
I'd like to execute simple commands and functions in R through a
website, is there any service like this somewhere?
I only found http://www.osvisions.com/r-online/ but it does not work
(last update 2003) and the links to releated websites only give errors
(if I calculate 7+3).
Thanks for help & hints,

smbd daemon running as wrong user ID
Hello,
I have a strange problem affecting samba-3.0.10-1.4E.12.2 on a Red Hat
Enterprise Linux AS release 4 system.
We have a multi-domain configuration here at University of Verona
(Italy). We use Samba as PDC for several faculties. Each faculty has its
own daemon instance and its own smb config file:

selecting elements in vector
Hi everybody,
I have the following problem. I have a vector containing character elements,
such as:
list = c("aa","bb","cc","dd","ee")
I want to create an index which identifies the elements that are different
from, e.g. "aa" and "bb".
When I do the following:

partial matching with grep()
dear all,
This is a probably a silly question.
If I type
> grep("x",c("a.x" ,"b.x","a.xx"),value=TRUE)
[1] "a.x" "b.x" "a.xx"
Instead, I would like to obtain only
"a.x" "b.x"
How is it possible to get this result with grep()?
many thanks for your attention,
best,
vito

Accessing R applications from Web
Hi
I am trying to provide web interface to my R application. My requirements
are simple and can be written down as follows :
1) User must provide all the input parameters on web interface.
2) Based on the input values, R will do some computations.
3) Project the numerical results as well as plots as html page to the user
on web.
Kindly tell me which package can help me in doing this. Your help
