R-alpha: model.matrix misbehaves on two-sided formulas
I am using R for a graduate class on linear models that I teach. I sent the class a sample transcript of explicit construction of the model matrix and use of the QR decomposition. One of the members of the class picked up on the fact that the model matrix was not what I advertised that it should be when a two-sided formula is used. A one-sided formula works properly. For example, >

R-beta: RPM and .deb packages for R-0.61
This may have been announced before but there are now both Debian GNU/Linux and RedHat Linux packages for R-0.61 on the CRAN archive sites. The master site for CRAN is http://www.ci.tuwien.ac.at/R/ That site provide a list of available mirror sites. Within the CRAN archive sites the pre-compiled packages for Linux are located in the bin/i386-linux directory. Under RedHat you can install

R-beta: New r-base package for Debian-2.0
I have recompiled the r-base package for Debian-2.0 with readline support. I still haven't determined why the configure script does not detect the readline library on one machine but does detect it on another where I compiled this. The package is available as ftp://franz.stat.wisc.edu/pub/R/bin/i386-linux/Debian-2.0/r-base_0.61.1-3_i386.deb and should appear on the other CRAN mirrors by

Segmented regression
Hello all, I have 3 time series (tt) that I've fitted segmented regression models to, with 3 breakpoints that are common to all, using code below (requires segmented package). However I wish to specifiy a zero coefficient, a priori, for the last segment of the KW series (green) only. Is this possible to do with segmented? If not, could someone point in a direction? The final goal is to

R-beta: "A brief history of S"
While writing his '98 Interface paper Ross Ihaka was asking about the history of S so he could relate it to the history of R. I was looking at the Statistics and Information Analysis Division's web page at Bell Labs and went to their technical reports section http://cm.bell-labs.com/stat/doc/ Sure enough, there is a tech report by Rick Becker on "A Brief History of S".

problem with nls()
I wanted to use the nls() module to solve a Problem from Sen & Srivastava (1990, p.209). Here is the (basic) code used to perform the estimation: library(SenSrivastava) library(nls) data(E9.8) # Use Linear Least Square for estimating start values lm.obj <- lm(R.1 ~ I.1 + S.1, data = E9.8) nls1.obj <- nls(R.1 ~ b.0 + b.1*(I.1^a.1-1)/a.1 + b.2*(S.1^a.2-1)/a.2,

R-beta: more model.matrix
I am trying to show some techniques to my graduate regression class. The textbook mentioned using bootstrap samples of regression coefficients for assessing variability. I decided to show them reasonably effective ways of doing the resampling. The following is a function I wrote to create bootstrap samples of coefficients from a fitted linear regression model. bsCoefSample <- ##

Access to cran.us.r-project.org
I am the maintainer of one of the CRAN mirrors in the U.S., cran.us.r-project.org. It appears that this site has been inaccessible since Friday. This has me puzzled because I can connect to the same machine through ssh and I can see that the http daemon (apache) is running. In fact I can make an http connection from this machine to this machine and from other machines on any of our subnets to

[LLVMdev] Request: As a contributor.
Dear Prof.Vikram. Really appreciate the hard work and determination in bringing LLVM concept. I had been a GCC contributor for almost 3-4 years, specially in backend with Renesas(SH) targets. Gone through http://llvm.org and found very challenging, seems to be better in many areas w.r.t GCC. Seeing the work of LLVM, am motivated to contribute to LLVM with reference to HPC needs. I maybe slow to

R-beta: Some General Questions
I would like to introduce R to the statistical community at large in the Washington, D.C. area. I will be giving a presentation, a part of which will be devoted to a discussion of R, before the Washington Statistical Society (WSS) on 15 October. Anyone residing in the D.C. area is welcomed to come. Also, if a developer should have plans of being Washington and would

A "stack" function
I am using R in my undergraduate engineering statistics courses, in which I am currently discussing one-way analysis of variance. Many of the data sets for the exercises or examples give the data in the form on one column per treatment level. To use the aov or lm functions such data should be converted to one column with all the response observations and a companion column with indicators of the
