discrepancy between R and Splus lm.influence() functions for family=Gamma(link=identity)
Hello, I am looking for an explanation and/or fix for a discrepancy in the behaviour of the R lm.influence() function [ version R 1.5.0 (2002-04-29) ] and the same function in Splus [ Splus version 5.1 release 1, running on SGI IRIX 6.2]. The discrepancy is of concern because I am migrating some Splus scripts to R and need to ensure consistency of results. Specifically, when I fit a glm()

R-beta: Some General Questions
I would like to introduce R to the statistical community at large in the Washington, D.C. area. I will be giving a presentation, a part of which will be devoted to a discussion of R, before the Washington Statistical Society (WSS) on 15 October. Anyone residing in the D.C. area is welcomed to come. Also, if a developer should have plans of being Washington and would

R-beta: Help: cov.mve in R? dgamma in Splus?
Hi all I have a couple of obscure questions for R/Splus experts (which unfortunately isn't me!) I am trying to compute Bayes Factors using some Splus code of Raftery in Gilks et al (1996). Only problem is 1) R doesn't seem to have a robust covariance (cov.mve) which I suspect I need rather than a non-robust classical estimate 2) Splus has cov.mve BUT dgamma in Splus doesn't have a

R-beta: Splus -> R migration issues
I've recently installed R for RH5.0 Linux and been considering moving existing work from Splus (Windows, 4.5). Also installed the win95 R, but this doesn't seem to work as well, and in any case the idea is to move toward Linux. 1 I attach and detach directories freely and often in Splus. Is it anticipated that it will be possible to do this in R in the future? 2 The ascii representation

R-beta: Splus incompatibility in axis() and image()
Just a note to point out a couple of small incompatibilities that tripped up a port of some S code to R. in axis() the first argument is called 'which' in R but 'side' in Splus, so code which names the first arg (ie axis(side=1)) falls over in R. The fix is a trivial name change in src/library/base/R/axis. in image() the defaulting of arguments doesn't allow me to say

R-beta: exchanging data between R/Splus and SPSS
Hi, is there any way to exchange (A LOT OF) data between SPPS and R/Splus, i.e., I want to get data from SPSS into R. It is a huge data frame with many columns being factors, so manual conversion is out of question (and there are more data to come). Exporting ASCII from SPSS seems to loose all level names, and the portable SPSS format doesn't look too nice. I've searched S-news and

R-beta: R and Copyright clarifications
As soon as Mike Meyer can get to it, I've asked him to make some minor changes in the S archive so that I can make it clear that permission for porting the Hmisc and Design libraries to R is denied. I don't have anything against R personally as a subset of S-PLUS. I just have only so much time and I don't want to spend any of it helping R users when I have no plans to install R

R or Splus?
It's been suggested I use R, I suppose because my employer is too skint to pay for a copy of Splus. But.... it doesn't seem to be stable. I was trying to do some ordinary regression and stepping through a model. I was trying to set up a model ('kitchen_sink') in which to put all my model parameters. Then I wanted to use step() to see what it would reduce the model to. I

Splus/R typedef for C equivalent of S "integer"
We've been working on making it easier to write packages that work in both R and Splus. One issue is that R and Splus use different internal representations of integers and this makes a difference on their 64-bit versions: R uses ints (32 bits on 32-bit and 64-bit versions of R) and Splus uses longs (32 bits on 32-bit Splus and 64 bits on 64-bit Splus). The obvious ways to deal with the

nlminb(Splus) vs optim(R)
Dear, R experts. I have two program codes, one is made by Splus and the other is made by transferring from Splus code. Because "nlminb" function in Splus is equivalent to "optim" in R, I expected to get exactly same result. But, sometime there is too large differece (greater than 2%) between two outputs. I looked two help files. According to those, in Splus, quasi-Newton
