centos 4.8 dvd on virtualbox x86_64
I just installed VirtualBox latest version on a new Win7 Pro x86_64 desktop, and tried to create a 64bit CentOS 4.8 install for doing some procedural testing... all install attempts hung at the samme place, shortly after grub, it hangs at... Dquot-cache hash table entries: 512 (order 0, 4096 bytes) sadly, I didn't capture the rest of the console output prior to that. 32bit 4.8 boots

QEMU/KVM: SELinux denial on /dev/zero when starting a VM
Hi, on an up to date CentOS 5.4 x86_64 (test machine), I systematically get the following SELinux denial when I start a QEMU/KVM virtual machine via virt-manager: SELinux is preventing qemu-kvm (qemu_t) "execute" to /dev/zero (zero_device_t). (full alert below) Running the command suggested by the alert (restorecon -v '/dev/zero') does not solve the problem. This does not

cut takes long time
The following cut command takes nearly 10 seconds on my machine even though the length of input vector is only 6. I am running on Windows Vista with C2D BLAS using R 2.11.1. Using the default BLAS and either R 2.10.1 or "R version 2.12.0 Under development (unstable) (2010-05-31 r52164)" also gives me results in the 9-11 second range. I would have expected it to take much less time.

More than 50% performance decrease.
I just installed Xubuntu 8.04, Wine 0.9.60 and Warcraft 3. Ive set it so it uses OpenGL and in game i get less than 30fps with everything on low and a low resolution. On Windows i can run it on medium with 1280x800 at 60fps. Im new to Xubuntu/linux so i dont know what could be causing it. Is this expected from Wine? Specs are 1GB RAM, Intel C2D 1.66GHZ, Intel 945GM onboard graphics.

config.log told me to report these (PR#12035)
Hello r-bugs, I am running openSuse 11.0, with my new Intel 8500 (Penryn) C2D, and I want to use icc and ifort. I was able to get a working Goto BLAS, following Dr. Goto's instructions. That seems to work OK with gcc and gfortran. I get about 10% faster computations by using -O3 rather than -O2. I get faster results with Goto BLAS rather than the R BLAS. Now I want to make icc and ifort

mainboard recommendations
Hi, As it has been brought to my attention (by several parties), my current MB does not support VT-d. Since I don''t feel like purchasing a brand new system, I have searched for replacement MB-s that would fit into my existing uATX case, support my C2D CPU, and support at least 4x2GB ram. I have narrowed it down to the following four models: SUPERMICRO MBD-C2SBM-Q-O (Q35 chipset)

does anyone have experience with clusters?
Hi all, I want to start experimenting with clusters, and I would like to use normal desktop grade hardware for this. I have some extra PC components lying around, enough to build 3 - 4 moderate desktops with a PIV / C2D CPU & 512MB - 1GB RAM each. All the machines should have at least a 100MB NIC, but I can add a gigabit NIC to the machines that doesn't have it if need be. I have used

OSX MacPort Install 1.0.1 - winecfg problems
I tried a binary install of Darwine last week but wasn't that happy and wanted to go for the more "authentic" MacPort install. OSX 10.5.6 Everything seemed to install properly, but the first thing I wanted to check was winecfg to set up the drives a bit differently. It didn't load very well as the first tab of winecfg loads (Application Settings), but the buttons at the bottom

advice about R for windows speed
Dear All, I appreciate any advice or hints you could provide about the following. We are running R code in a server (running Windows XP and QuadCore Xeon processors, see details below) and we would like to use the server efficiently. Our code takes a bit more than 6 seconds per 25 iterations in the server using a default R 2.10.0 installation. We tested our code in two other computers, a Dell

Checksum fletcher4 or sha256 ?
Hi, I''m atmost ready to deploy my new homeserver for final testing. Before I want to be sure that nothing big is left untouched. Reading ZFS Admin Guide About the checksum method, there''s no advice about it. The default is fletcher4. there''s also SHA256 Now the sha256 is pretty ''heavy'' to calculate, so I think that it''s left out because can
