centos-announce list?
Any chance we can set up a low-volume "centos-announce" list so that we
all don't have to read all of these non-Centos-specific E-mail threads
about people figuring out how to admin a Linux box when all we need to
know is when major releases/milestones/news items are available?

Centos 4
Has anyone done an upgrade from RHEL3 to RHEL4? Is this likely to break
a lot of things? How long will Centos be supporting version 3? I just
installed Centos 3.4 two weeks ago!
The only problem I'm having with Centos is that the perl is a bit old. I
have errors with spamassassin. So far bugzilla for spamassasin is
blaming it on the version of perl included in RHEL3 and bugs in the

C API
Hi.
I am one of the developers of Swish-e (http://swish-e.org/), an indexing/search
tool similar to Xapian.
I am currently researching future development directions for the Swish-e
project. Three of our most often-requested features are UTF-8 support,
incremental indexing, and large (multimillion) doc sets, all of which seem to be
ably handled in the Xapian library.
So one possible

SWISH::Prog::Xapian
Early[0] implementations of Swish3 for Perl are now available on CPAN.
http://search.cpan.org/dist/SWISH-Prog-KSx/
http://search.cpan.org/dist/SWISH-Prog-Xapian/
These Perl implementations offer KinoSearch[1] or Xapian[2] as alternate backend
libraries.
SWISH::Prog::Xapian should build indexes compatible with the swish_xapian tool
that comes with libswish3.
Feedback welcome.

ANNOUNCE: alternate mail archive site
I really dislike ListProcessor, the mailing list software samba.org
uses. There's a lot of reasons, most having to do with header
rewriting, but that's not the point of this message.
One thing I don't like is its list archive feature. The archives are
hard to navigate, and the threading is atrocious. I'm accustomed to
MHonArc-generated archives, like they use at debian.org and

Mailman - searchable archive
Mailman works well for our mailing lists, but the archive is
unacceptable - the worst thing is lack of search function.
I got one tip for this:
1) emails converted to html format with mhonarc
2) search can be done with htdig
Opinions? Maybe there are better software solutions for this - I hope.

Revisiting mime-types and file extensions
Hi,
I'm in the process of adding support for Markdown to a minimal CMS in
Rails, [Railfrog][railfrog], which uses mime types to select appropriate
processing. I have had a look through the archives but have not been
able to see that a consensus has emerged as to what such a mime type for
Markdown should look like. My reading of the RFCs suggests that it
should be within the "text/*"

omega and "text/x-mail" support
Hi,
I would like to add "text/x-mail" support to omega. I'm using mhonarc to
export mail to HTML format and I'm using HTML parse to index mail
content (largely inspired by "application/vnd.ms-outlook" format).
The problem is that files attached to the mail are not indexing at all.
I think it's not possible in "index_file" function to index 2 files as

wine won't load anything
I have been able to install Starcraft and Swish 2.0 using wine (under
Mandrake 8.0) but when I try to run either program I get a "can't load
*.dll" error. Both errors are from dll files that the are in the program
directory itself. I have attempted to specify these dlls like all of the
default dlls in the wine config file but it still can't find them. Anyone
know if I have

LDAP, sieve, and virtual users
This seems to be a common topic but I haven't seen anyone ask this exact
question and get a decent answer:
I use virtual mailboxes with all of the db's in LDAP. Last night I
upgraded to the latest CVS version of dovecot and dovecot-lda and got
global sieve filtering working by setting the global_script_path to a
sieve like /home/vmail/mydomain/sieve and it works great. Now I need to

[ADMIN] MASSIVE LIST CHANGES
Attention Users:
On Friday, May 9, at 2100 EDT(US), the list server will be taken offline for
an extended period of time for machine and software upgrades. During this
time mail to the lists will be bounced with a message stating the server
is offline. The outage is expected to take about 20 hours. Of course once
we start with the migration we are not going to stop until it is done.

How about this. Its not as 'swish' as Doug's response, but it might be a
little simpler to think about and adapt...

Xen domU default gateway missing/ARP table full
I have been trying to figure out why my domU NIC becomes unreachable
(could not even ping) at various times. (Normally when the server was
trying to update clamav from the various busy mirrors at 4am). There
also seemed to be some latency when connecting which I chalked up to it
being a virtual machine.
When I checked my logs, I found thousands of :

Nice review of Wine on frankw.livejournal.com
Some fellow in South Africa is blogging his move to Linux:
http://frankvw.livejournal.com/195867.html
An excerpt:
"There is a huge database of applications available that lists every
application that has been tested with Wine, and it tells you how well
(or badly) it runs. I'm amazed how many Windows applications will work
with Wine flawlessly. I remembered Wine from its early days when it

Nested if help
Hello,
I am trying to find a direct way to write a nested if of sorts to find data
for a specific time range for a specific day (across a range of days) and
have exhausted my abilities with the manuals I have at hand. I have a good
deal of data of this approximate form:
day time price
1 1am 5
1 2am 7
1 3am 9
1 4am 12
2 1am 5
2 2am 7

Can you delete this message from the web???
Just thought it was old enough to be deleted.
The problem was not that hard looking back at it now.
Thanks
