apt-get update: GPG error from cran.R-project.org
I recently was forced to do a dist-upgrade and rebuild my kernel, so a
lot has
changed on my system, and I don't know if that is related to the errors
& warnings
I get from apt-get update.
Any ideas?
thanks

Problems with Wine on Debian
Hello all,
I am fairly new to Linux, so I hope that the following problem is not just me being ... new to Linux.
I have been trying to install Wine on Debian (Etch 4.09 I think it is called). I first tried to use the
apt-get install Wine
command followed by the winecfg (creating the .wine folder), but when I tried to run the notepad.exe (i.e. with the command wine

update.packages() for R 2.7.1: mgcv fails
Hi
I just upgraded my debian/stable to R 2.7.1 via apt-get install r-base

began to update.packages()
> update.packages(lib.loc="/usr/local/lib/R/site-library")

but I get:

Strange Conflicts with Debian Repositories
Dear All,
I have just installed a fresh Debian testing (squeeze) on my system
(amd64 architecture).
I am experiencing some really strange problems in updating my system
whenever I have both the R repository and the multimedia repository
available.
This is my source.list (when I disable the multimedia repository)
~$ cat /etc/apt/sources.list

read.*: How to read from a URL?
The question is how to use a URL in place of a file= argument for
read.*.functions that do
not support this internally.
e.g., utils::read.table() and her family all support a file= argument
that can take a URL
equally well as a local file. So, if I have a file on the web, I can
equally well do

Best way to handle include files?
Hi folks,
I am building a new box. Want it to look
pretty much like an older Asterisk 1.2,
Debian box that is in production. The new
box will used as a test box before we
implement changes to the production box.
New box:

comparative density estimates
I have two series of events over time and I want to construct a graph of the
relative frequency/density of these events that allows their
distributions to
be sensibly compared. The events are the milestones items in my project on
milestones in the history of data visualization [1], and I want to
compare trends
in Europe vs. North America.
I decided to use a graph of two overlaid density

reading and frequency analysis of Spanish text
For an historical paper I'm working on, I have some Spanish plaintext,
presently in the form of a Word .doc
file,
http://euclid.psych.yorku.ca/SCS/Gallery/images/Private/Langren/Verdadera-spanish-stripped.doc
and also some ciphered text from the same original source. The ultimate
goal is to use some
frequency analysis of letters and word lengths in the plaintext to help

plotting on a reverse log scale
I'd like to do some plots of historical event data on a reverse log
scale, started, say at the year 2000 and going
backwards in time, with tick marks spaced according to log(2000-year).
For example, see:
http://euclid.psych.yorku.ca/SCS/Gallery/images/log-timeline.gif
As an example, I'd like to create a density plot of such data with the
horizontal axis reverse-logged,

R package BibTex entries: looking for a more general solution
== Summary ==
* Problem: BibTeX entries extracted from R packages via citation()
require too much manual editing to be

overlaid filled contour plots
I'm trying to make a set of contour plots of bivariate kernel density
estimates, showing three such plots overlaid,
similar to this plot
http://euclid.psych.yorku.ca/SCS/Private/Test/ridge-boot2.pdf
except that I would like to have the contours *filled* (using
transparent colors). To make this reproducible, I've
saved the results of KernSmooth::bkde2D() in the following file:

how to convert a data.frame to a list of dist objects for individual differences MDS?
I have a 45 x 16 data frame consisting of dissimilarities among 10
colors, giving in each
column the 45 = 10*9/2 pairwise judgments for one of 16 subjects. The
rownames
identify each pair of colors, e.g, "AC" = ("A","C"), and the pairs are
ordered by columns
in the lower triangle of each distance matrix.

problem with abline for x.y
I'm trying to do a sunflowerplot of Galton's data, with both regression
lines and data ellipses,
and I must be doing something wrong, because the lines do not intersect
at \bar{x}, \bar{y}.
The problem is likely in the line for x.y, but I don't know how to
specify that correctly.
The data is read in grouped form( galton), and then ungrouped (galton2):

rgl_081.708: rgl.snapshot fails, causing persistent problems
*Summary*: The latest Windows binary version of rgl_081.708 from
R-Forge has some problem that
causes rgl.snapshot() to fail, at least on my system.
Thereafter, *all* rgl 3D graphics are rendered without any text labels.
The last problem remains even after (a) removing rgl and re-installing
from CRAN, (b) re-starting
with a fresh installation of all of R 2.7.2.

Updating packages after install of r-base 2.6.2: cant update rgl
Hi
I just upgraded my R from stabel/etch from 2.4.x to 2.6.2 via

which worked fine, installing all dependencies
From R, as root, I did
update.packages()
but a number of packages packages failed to install, either for missing
gfortran
or missing dependencies.
