translating RoR framework into the Java environment
For a company study I am trying to come up with what would one need to replicate *grosso modo and at the functional level* what we get in Rails. This does not need to be an "equivalent" solution, just what a Java programmer would build upon, the canonical aggregation of components, the usual tools. My first fraft is: Struts -> C layer Hibernate -> M

Deploying with Capistrano via cron
I''m attempting to auto deploy a rails application to a development server periodically during ongoing development. I''ve setup ssh keys to allow the proper user auto login permissions, but have ran into 2 issues. 1. When the script is run from a cron job as the same user as I currently manually deploy from I receive an error when reaper tries to execute - "can''t

RoR or Java for community portal?
Hello Ruby users, let me introduce myself briefly - I am a student at OvG University Magdeburg, Germany, and I hope to get some advice for a nonprofit student community portal I am involved with, just in case somebody is interested: http://www.webuni.de, having around 3000 active users. Development is done on a voluntary basis by members of the community, mainly IT students with too much

Why Wouldn't I Use Rails
I am starting a large project and still selecting what framework to use. Rather than ask brand x what is wrong with brand y, I am more interested in self confession. Why would I *not* want to use Rails (compared to Iowa and Nitro). I posted a synopsis of the project to ruby-talk but will repost it here if anyone wants it. xev

Traceroute
How do I allow traceroute to reach my server? Pings work fine but traceroute stops at the last hop before my server. If I shut off the firewall it reaches it fine. I forgot. Why do we hate* Java?
Hi, I''ve started reading some Java books. Gasp! What makes website development with Java so bad? I haven''t looked at Struts but I''m reading about Hibernate. Compared to ActiveRecord, Hibernate seems like some extra typing to explicitly define the model fields, getters and setters. I know that these are things that you can do in ActiveRecord when things get complicated

Dedicated Servers
Hi, A little bit off topic here, but I was wondering if anybody knows about a good dedicate server provider, that offers CentOS (but ofcourse) as a os choice, and that is very reliable. I am using SuperbServer, but as of this moment 2007/03/19 1406 America/NewYork time, my server is down do to a power outage at one of their facilities in VA. This is the second outage in less that 5 months.

Sortable and the Server
I want to build a sortable list that updates the server when the item is dropped into its new position. How to create a sortable list is clear, but I''m looking for an example of how to integrate this with the server side. Are there any examples or tutorials around? I''m working in a java environment. Thanks, Jamie

RoR VS Rails ???
I didn''t get a chance to go to this meeting debating WebObjects Vs Rails, but here''s a report about it: http://desperatepundit.com/blog/cremes/technology/2006/02/15/WebObjects-versus-Ruby-On-Rails.html I don''t get what he''s saying, hand coding the model? yeah, you COULD ... but what about script/generate ??? And is that so what he said about security? --

Many To Many''s Join table attributes + migrations
Hi all, just joined and have only just kicked off with Rails (coming, but not departing, from WebObjects development). And so far there seems to be a lot of promise except for one thing I can''t figure out as yet -- the above problem. Say I have the following conceptual relationships: ITEMS <<--->> CARTS i.e., each item can belong to one or more categories. So really

Rails namespace help requested
Hi all - I posted yesterday with the subject "namespace pollution" and with the high traffic on this list, it''s kind of disappeared and I''m in need of a quick answer so i can move on. To recap quickly, can someone tell if Rails is somehow forcing all modules into a single namespace? I have a model class StateProvince and inside a webservice module in my lib/

how do I download pictures from a dumb phone?
Inserting anything other than a USB cable into the phone seems to be a no-go. There is one slightly wider and thinner recess, but no metal is in it. It looks like a slightly less dumb model would use the same outer case and a somewhat different inner case. >From lsusb: Bus 002 Device 007: ID 04e8:6640 Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd Usb Modem Enumerator [root at localhost ~]# file
