dbench & similar - as a valid benchmark
hi everybody
would a tool such as dbench be a valid bechmark for gluster?
and, most importantly, is there any formula to estimate raw
fs to gluster performance ratio for different setups?
for instance:
having a replicated volume, two bricks, fuse mountpoint to
volume via non-congested 1Gbps
or even
a volume on single brick with fuse client mountpoing locally
what percentage/fraction of raw

dbench
trying to check gluster performance with dbench
I'm using a replica 3 with a bonded dual gigabit (balance-alb) on all
servers and shard (64M) enabled.
I'm unable to over 3MB (three) MB/s from *inside* VM, thus I think
there isn't any small file issue, as from inside VM there isn't any
metadata operation for gluster.
Any advice ?

smbtorture : Unknown operation mkdir
Hi,
I got problem while using smbtorture with the NBENCH test. The error
happens on the "Mkdir" operation.
I'm using the file "client.txt" from dbench-3.04. There are "Mkdir"
operations, but in the file "torture.c", this operation is not handled.
Few other operations are not handled. I did compare operations from
run_netbench and those that are present

a comparison of ext3, jfs, and xfs on hardware raid
I'm setting up a new file server and I just can't seem to get the
expected performance from ext3. Unfortunately I'm stuck with ext3 due
to my use of Lustre. So I'm hoping you dear readers will send me some
tips for increasing ext3 performance.
The system is using an Areca hardware raid controller with 5 7200RPM
SATA disks. The RAID controller has 128MB of cache and the disks

smb/cifs share network speed testing
Is there any piece of software that I can use to run between a client
and a linux or windows server with a smb/cifs share that will test
network speed, latency, sustained read/writes, multiple file create,
read, write, close, etc.. etc.. over X period time?
I'm testing a Centos server with samba and Windows 2k3/8 servers on the
other end of a T1 connection and while I know the T1 bandwidth

XCP & Openstack
Hey guys,
Has anyone had much success with XCP and Open Stack together?
I''m in the process of putting together a open stack test cluster and I
thought I might be able to use XCP dom0''s for it.. but to be honest it
doesn''t look so good.
I tried following these instructions on a separate XCP test machine:

[XCP] - XCP -> HCL
I''m needing to put a network card on a test server XCP 1.0.
I''m seeing the citrix hcl (http://hcl.xensource.com) and I''m a doubt. I base
that on which version to look for a compatible card?
If the kernel is the same as in 5.6.0 FP1, but if the version of XCP uses
the hypervisor 3.4.2 neither appears on the list.
ps: I had a RTL-8169 but stopped working with update 0.5

benchmark results
I've had the chance to use a testsystem here and couldn't resist running a
few benchmark programs on them: bonnie++, tiobench, dbench and a few
generic ones (cp/rm/tar/etc...) on ext{234}, btrfs, jfs, ufs, xfs, zfs.
All with standard mkfs/mount options and +noatime for all of them.
Here are the results, no graphs - sorry:

Problems running dbench on 3.3
To test gluster's behavior under heavy load, I'm currently doing this on two machines sharing a common /mnt/gfs gluster mount:
ssh bal-6.example.com apt-get install dbench && dbench 6 -t 60 -D /mnt/gfs
ssh bal-7.example.com apt-get install dbench && dbench 6 -t 60 -D /mnt/gfs
One of the processes usually dies pretty quickly like this:

Unable to get IP address in guest OS through DHCP
Hello,
I have a Gentoo Linux guest, which was working very well with the past
xm tool stack.
Since the migration to xen-4.1.1 and to the new xl tool stack, I have
a problem for the IP
assignation. Actually, when dhcpcd starts at boot time the IP address
is not correctly assigned.
This also happens if I perform "dhcpcd eth0" once I''ve accessed to the
guest shell.

[XCP] XCP network and VLAN by Open vSwitch
Hello Everyone,
I am new with XCP.
I''ve setup several hosts with* XCP 1.0* and manage it through XenCenter and
command console.
Each host has two NICs, one (xenbr0) connected to a physical switch for
Internet (said sw1), the other (xenbr3) connected to a physical switch for
internal network (said sw2).
I am trying to setup VMs and VLANs on xenbr3.

How to Install XCP 1.5 beta
I would like to install XCP. So I started at
http://www.xen.org/products/index.html
and found the section labeled
''Xen Cloud Platform Project''
This section was a nice overview but no
links to docs or downloads.
The next section was labeled ''USERS''
which had a download link to

change hvm defaults for timer_mode and hpet?
Due to recent changes in timer handling (specifically building
hpet emulation on top of Xen system time and ensuring it is
monotonic), I wonder if it now makes sense to:
1) change hvm default for hpet to 1 (was 0)
2) change hvm timer_mode default from 0 to 2
I encouraged adding the hvm hpet parameter and defaulting
it to 0 because the virtual hpet was not reliable and many
guests/versions
