Read data with different column lengths
Dear r-help users,
I have the following simple problem: Reading data from a file. The
file is a .txt file exported ("save as...") from Excel (see below for
an example). The Excel file consists of two header rows (first row
consists of ticker symbols of stocks, the second row consists of
column explanations ("Date","Px Last"), followed by several rows of

Patch for rsync --link-dest won't link even if existing file is out of date (fwd)
Folks,
We faced a similar situation to that which Ken described - we recycle
backup directories, for good reason.
There is a patch to solve the problem.
Our systems administrator provided the following description of the
patches we use:

Improved version of Rprofmem
The Rprofmem facility is currently enabled only if the configuration
option --enable-memory-profiling is used. However, the overhead of
having it enabled is negligible when profiling is not actually being
done, and can easily be made even smaller. So I think it ought to be
enabled all the time.
I've attached a patch doing this, which also makes a number of other
improvements to Rprofmem,

wz_tooltip and updating the DOM
Hi all,
I am using Prototype in conjunction with wz_tooltip and am having a
problem with the tool tips not being updated in time.
When a user mouses over a link, I am making an Ajax call to a CFM page
that sends back an HTML table and updates the contents of a div with
the returned content. I then call wz_tooltip and reference that div to
use as the tool tip. However, what is displayed in the

Question about flash
Hi!
I''ve got a search form, which calls search action. If the result set is
empty, i set flash to display a proper message. At the end search action
calls "render :action => list".
If the search action returns empty result set and the message is
displayed, but later user changes searching conditions, calls search
again and result set is no longer empty, the message is

Ok, I''m stumped on arrays of form fields
My Alert object has_many Links. I''ve got the whole system setup where,
once I have the Alert object created, I can use a nice form_remote to
show the user all the Links currently attached, and add more. But the
form itself starts out with 0 links.
What I''d like to do now is construct the form with a couple of default
"Place link here" objects in the array, and
