recent stability problems with fxp driver
I've spent the past four days or so updating machines here to 4.8/9-stable via
cvsup, and have done a complete make buildworld/kernel on each machine (some
SMP, some single processor). It seems something is broken with the latest fxp
driver, on each machine (different mobos and hardware configs) heavy network
traffic with fxp NICs causes timeouts and random kernel panics.

Zsh fork bomb paniced my kernel.
Hi,
My machine just bombed when I did the following stupid command.
:(){:|:};:
Zsh chewed up everything on the machine...
I ran it knowing I'd probably have to reboot.
But, I hardly expected it to panic.
Or, was that normal?
Anyway, the following is some detail...
Please mail me if there is more I'm ment to do.
Thanks in advance :)

Ethernet puzzle
So I just finished doing a fresh install of CentOS 6.3. The
machine has three ethernet ports in it: one on the motherboard (VIA
Rhine), and two add-on cards, an Intel Pro100 and an old SMC1255TX. When
CentOS comes up, this is what I see in the dmesg output:
# dmesg | grep eth

Errors on install...
Hi all,
I found the web site for R and decided to install it on my freebsd system;
however, I have run into 'permission problems' during execution. I do the
standard .configure, make, make check, make install and install into the
default location of /usr/local/... but when a normal user attempts to run
'R' I get the following:

Trillian On Wine?
Has anyone been able to successfully run Trillian Pro 3.0 on Wine? I
just tried today (admittedly, I'm VERY new to Wine) and it started to
come up fine, but the Contact List window (which normally does a kind of
fade into view thing) just kept moving down the screen back and forth
and never rendering correctly. And the execution of the actual account
sign-ons never happened, according

If so, how?

Adaptec 39320A woes
I'm having speed problems with the SCSI card we're using to do tape
backup. It seems to be functioning in 16 bit mode and the current
thinking is that perhaps it's using a legacy driver instead of the
correct one. The Adaptec site has a 'driver' for RHEL5 which I've
downloaded and tried to install but it seems to have a problem
installing on a CentOS-5 system.

[LLVMdev] Solaris (sparc) llc bugs
Hello.
I have been trying to check, how llvm works on Solaris recently.
First I have tested lli, whitch seems to execute the bytecode generated
on Linux without any problems. However, llc has failed to generate valid
SPARC assembler code even on the helloworld example. Here is the generated
code:

[Bridge] recent crashes? Linux kernel 2.6.18-1.2239.fc5 (Linux Fedora Core 5)
At the risk of angering the crash Gods, my sustem has NOT crashed again
since I downgraded the kernel from 2.6.18-1.2239.fc5 to 2.6.18-1.2200.fc5.
Given that newfound stability, and my lack of time, I'm going to put on
hold any further diagnostics, until the next kernel revision is released.
I have submitted a report at bugzilla.redhat.com (bug 218128). (Ah, nuts;

Running Trillian freezes X
Hey all
I've successfully installed and setup 'Trillian' from www.trilian.cc.
It's a consolidated Messenger app ( Yahoo + ICQ + AIM + MSN). It works
about 99%. :)
The 1% failure is in the 'Buddy list' window itself, and ONLY that
window. Anytime I try to move it, it freezes my X. If I kill wine, and
kill kdeinit, I can re-login, and try again.
Only this window causes a

Upgrade from Hell
For those of you running SuSE 9.1, I do not recommend upgrading to 9.2
at this time.
Refer to http://shorewall.net/myfiles.htm for information on my
configuration:
a) On Ursa:
1) After the upgrade, both of the NICs were recognized as "configured"
in YAST yet neither of them would start; ifup claimed that no
configuration could be found for either interface. Only got them running

Samba writing speed with big blocks
Hello !
I'm having serious problems with Samba's writing speed (both 2.0.5a from
RH 6.1 and 2.0.6 compiled from sources) on a 100Mbit network.
If I write a file with block size 65487 or less, then the writing speed is about
7-8 MB/s - a very nice value, my bow to the Samba team :)
If I change the block size to 65488 or more, then the writing speed falls
down to 3 MB/s, which is not what

kernel oops generated by smbfs module
Greetings,
I have run into a kernel oops that I can generate at will, and that
hangs my machine. The machine is running Gentoo Linux, 2.6.11 kernel
and gcc 3.3.5. I can post more information if needed.
The problem arises when I mount an SMB share from a 2000-series Snap
server (network appliance); software version 3.4.804, hardware 2.0.3.
The mount is fine, and can sit for a long time. However,

JiveMessenger HOWTO
Any one out there done the JiveMesenger jabber server?
www.jivesoftware.com/messenger/
I want to get this running to then do the next step of tie-ing it in
to the * server for presence & callerID screen pops.
Pursued their site a bit but never found a HOWTO or anything that
looked relevant.
Appreciated.
Peace. Love. Linux.

Packet Loss !!
We have been using HTB for last 10-11 months without any problem. But from last few days we have been facing huge packet loss when we turn on traffic shaping using HTB. I upgraded to 2.4.24 kernel (without any htb patch), still there is same problem.
Avg. traffic is around 2Mbps and 4Mbps at peak hours. There are around 110 HTB classes and SFQ attached to each class.
We are using 4 port Tulip

Wine and XP
I have Wine working, and my Windows XP-installation mounted
as read only. Reading the FAQ, I noticed: "DON'T configure Wine
to use an NT-based Windows install (NT, Win2K, WinXP)."
So... is it futile to try to get XP-applications running on my
Linux-box? Should I install them from Wine, and if so, how?

I'm mostly interested in running Instant Messanger

MSN Messenger in Wine?
It's marked "garbage" in the appdb, because the installer doesn't run
without quite a bit of tweaking. But anyway ...
I want to get MSN working in Wine. It's for my girlfriend's daughter,
whose XP box just got trashed by a virus/rootkit (spread via MSN, of
course). So we've saved her stuff and we're nuking and paving the box.
I would like to use Ubuntu instead of
