[OT] Apache rewrite stuff...
Hi all, a little off topic, but was wondering what the best way is to
re-write incoming requests so that they all end up at the same domain.
For example, if I had:
my_domain.net
my_domain.com
my_domain.org
Whats the best way to map/redirect all of these to
www.my_domain.com
?
I know its possible, just not sure what to add for rules/virtual hosts
in my apache config.
Thanks for the help!

Tracking page hits
Hello all,
I am developing an online store and would like to keep track of how many
times each product was viewed. While I can keep track of page hits using
something like webalizer, this won''t really work (I don''t think) as the
pages are not going to be static. Has anyone else implemented this and
if so could you please point me in the right direction. A potential

Adding routes via plugins
Hi,
I''m attempting to add a route via a plugin. I attempted to add the following to my init.rb:
myroute = ActionController::Routing::Routes.connect "boo2", :controller=>''plugin'', :action=>''index''
puts "path=#{myroute.path}"
myroute.options.keys.each do |k|
puts "#{k}=#{myroute.options[k]}"

[OT] O''Reilly Cookbooks
Hi,
Has anyone gotten the "roughcuts" of the Ruby and Rails cookbooks? If you have the Pragmattic Rails Cookbook is the O''Reilly worth it? Also can you download PDF''s of their "roughcuts". The website is kind of vague, it just mentions online access (whatever that means).
Thanks in advance.

Rails Plugin Directory - Comments
The directory of Rails plugins at http://www.agilewebdevelopment.com/
plugins/ now has support for adding comments to plugins, so stop by
and leave a kind word about your favorite plugin. :)
A feed for plugin comments is available at http://
feeds.feedburner.com/RubyOnRailsPluginComments, while the plugin feed
itself is available at http://feeds.feedburner.com/RubyOnRailsPlugins.

using flickr.rb
Does anyone have any experience with using flickr.rb? Seems the only
thing which is documented for it is searching through your photos.
Anyway, all I''m trying to do is return a list of my 20 most recent
photos, but nothing seems to work.
doing this returns 100 photos for a given user (which takes all day to
load)
@flickr = Flickr.new ''API KEY''

Time-based cache fragment expiration
Hello,
I''m trying to figure out how I could implement fragment caching that
expires every x amount of time. I thought of writing a runner script
that would expire the cache and set it as a cron job, but that
doesn''t really work because runner scripts act on models and not
controllers.
Does anybody have any ideas?

has_and_belongs_to_many find
Say I have a post model that has_and_belongs_to_many :categories, and a
category model that has_and_belongs_to_many :posts. So I have a
categories_posts table to do the join. That''s all find and dandy.
However I want to be able to find all the posts that belong to a
specific category.
I tried Post.find_by_category(:id) but that doesn''t work.
Does anyone have any insight?

how to make field in model immutable after create
Hello everyone!
I want to have login field in User model which is set only once (on
create), and then it should fail validation if the value is changed.
How can I do this? I dig around for validation and tried
def after_validation_on_update
unless User.find_by_login(:login)
errors.add(:login, "is immutable. You can''t change it")
end
end
in model, but somewhat it

caches_action does not go off the entire URL
I am trying to use caches_action and the agile book says that it is keyed
off the URL, however it does not seem to pick up the URL parameters.
http://localhost:3000/controller/action/id?foo=bar
and
http://localhost:3000/controller/action/id?foo=foobar
Returns the same page.
Anyone looked into how to add URL parameters to the cached key? Also,
where do those file get stored?
Thanks

Adding methods to models
All,
This is more of a theoretical question I suppose - I''m looking for what the
consensus is for the "correct" approach in Rails/MVC.
I have a standard security model where a User can have many Roles. There is
a User model, a Role model, and in the db, a linking table, etc. Each role
has a name as well as a category (say, name="waiter", category="restaurant

svn externals and Edge Rails
Hi all:
I am considering using edge rails so I can use join tables. I want to
use svn:externals to manage edge rails, however I want to understand
it more before I go and set everything up. so everytime I commit my
app it will pull the most recent version of rails from the svn
repository, right? What if the current version of rails is unstable,
is there a way to rollback edgerails and NOT my app?

Correct way to capture a select param
I''m having trouble capturing the params from a select type form.
For text field like this:
<%= text_field_tag :courseid %>
I''m able to capture the posted value with this
params[:courseid]
However with a select field like this:
<%= select(:course, :id, %w{value1 value2 value3} %>
I''m not sure how to capture the posted value.

Hello,
I''m having a problem utilizing the find_all method with a value from a

Override .find, .find_by_id, etc...
I read these:
http://www.ruby-forum.com/topic/185297#new

it works, it override the .find perfectly, however it does not cover
.find_by_id or other .find_by_XXX
Is there anyway to override all the find function of a modal? I want to
set the default "select" for User modal, only return name and id, but

Mongrel Now Recommended Setup?
I see that the RubyOnRails.com site has migrated to Mongrel with Apache as a
front-end proxy.
Is that now the/a recommended setup for Rails apps? We''re still using FCGI
but I''m always interested to learn more about other folk''s successful
deployment choices.
Across all of our sites we''re pumping out about 300k pages per day so
