Coming soon ... a Rails Virtual Applicance
For those of you interested in such things, I am building a VMWare virutal
machine with a complete LAMP stack plus Rails. The project is set up in
Rubyforge at http://rubyforge.org/projects/vgrails/. There''s not much there
yet, but I expect to have something ready for folks to test towards the 12th of
April, 2006. The project name is "vgrails", which stands for VMWare + Gentoo +

Instant Rails 1.0 preview7 -- with Typo!
My apologies to all who downloaded preview6, it did not contain Rails 1.0 as
advertised -- I screwed up!
Preview7 does, in fact, contain Rails 1.0 and as a bonus, also includes Typo
2.6.0 as a preinstalled sample app. See the Getting Started page for
instructions on running Typo in Instant Rails:

Instant Rails 1.0 Final has been released!
This release is unchanged from release candidate 1 other than to update the
version number in the Help>>About dialog.
Instant Rails is a one-stop Rails runtime solution containing Ruby, Rails,
Apache, and MySQL, all preconfigured and ready to run. No installer, you
simply drop it into the directory of your choice and run it. It does not
modify your system environment. This release of

fun/flamebait: Java Web Devel Stacks
I''ll pose a question partly for fun, partly out of interest to see
what everyone else is doing to survive the pain of the day job. It''s
for the professional J2EE developer converts out there.
Let''s say someone hired you to write a Basecamp clone, but it has to
be done in Java, say on the Tomcat or JBoss platform. What does your
stack look like now that you''ve

Which mysql for a new project?
Hi all,
I am about to start a new RoR project. Which version of mysql is the
current best one to use? I will be using the soon-to-be-released RoR
1.0 for the project. I really don''t want to start a PostreSQL vs.
MySQL vs. Whatever war. I have all databases including Oracle at my
disposal. This project will be my testbed for using RoR with mysql. I
will be doing other tests with other dbs

Performance (cough cough) Poor: Instant Rails
Hi,
In short, RoR is brand spanking new to me, I set up Instant Rails (if
you can call copying files "setup") and made my own simple app via
scaffold. One table, 11 cols, 100 rows. All is well, except when I view
the data, it takes 5-10 seconds to show the page, 5-10 more seconds to
get the edit page and so on. Going back to the previous page is no
faster (via previous link).

Creating a symbolic link within a Rails application?
Hi, how does one create a symbolic link within a Rails application? At this
time, I can perform this action at the command line but I''m not sure how to
do it within Rails. BTW, I''m doing the following command in Mac OS X:
ln -s $SITE_ROOT/common_directory/* $SITE_ROOT/new_directory

PROPOSAL: The list needs to fork (desperately).
I''d like to propsoe that the RubyOnRails mailing list forks into three
lists.
PROBLEM:
* The list is getting swamped with traffic, making it hard to use and
even harder to follow.
* Many, many messages get lost, with no reply.
* Due to the overwhelming traffic, it''s hard for beginners to get the
help that they need, since their messages get lost in the shuffle, and

Using NTLM for S.S.O. in Rails
Greetings all,
To all the good souls that happen to know NTLM and Rails....
Short version:
--------------
- I''m looking for server code to extract credentials through NTLM dialog
with the client (IE)
- I found nothing usable/useful (as they both implement the client side
code) in
- rubyntlm on rubyforge

bilingual site: exclude fields set from query
Hi all,
Is there a way to have searches no use some indexed fields, when
processing a query?
context:
I have a model Foo that holds some information in two languages :
- text1_nl, text2_nl, text3_nl
and
- text1_en, text2_en, text3_en
Some other fields are common to both languages and indexed as well
- first_name, last_name
Depending on the visitor language choice I need to exclude the

convert HTML to LaTeX or text
Hi all,
I have a RoR app which can output a report in HTML back to the web browser, or
(preferably) in PDF using the RTex plugin. I have a number of text fields which
are stored as HTML, and am looking for a good way to convert them to something
LaTeX-compatible, or plain text if that''s the last resort. I''ve seen a number
of html2tex-type converters out there, but they are by

Agile Web Development book - version 4.0 released
I don''t know if I missed this on the list, but the Agile Web Development
with Rails book is now at version 4.0, for those of us who bought the
PDF from the Prag Prog site.
Just a few typos and corrections from the looks of it, but can''t hurt to
get the latest.
You can reorder the book for download at:

Questions regarding architecture of a server-based image-processor deployed in ROR
Hello,
I''m planning to deploy a hybrid 2D/3D visual fx and image manipulation
engine as a server accessible via the Web. So you can send Flickr
images to it for all manner of image trickery.
My engine uses a little text-based language I devised that is parsed
and a resultant image produced. The UI for this service collects the
input image and associated params and passes the collection

RoR meets .net *cringe*
It was a miserable failure for us. Your best bet is to run on Linux.

When it finally worked, after two weeks of trial and error (and we can''t
reproduce it again) it performs poorly under IIS. It looks

Instant Rails on Win XP SP2
I am trying to run instant rails on windows xp SP2. I can get the
cookbook and typo sample sites to work with webrick but not with scgi.
When i click the start with scgi i get a blank dos window and typing
www.mycookbook.com returns
Firefox can''t establish a connection to the server at
www.mycookbook.com.
This suggests that apache is not even running even though the green

ruby 1.8.2 or 1.8.3 on Linux?
I''ve seen some reports of problems with running Rails (version 1.0
here) on Ruby 1.8.3. Is this true across the board or just Mac OS?
I''m setting up a Linux server and want to know if 1.8.3 is ok on that.
Thanks,

An offer: R packages in Gentoo Land?
Greetings. I love R, we run Gentoo. I want to maintain R packages in
the same methods I use for the rest of them; in Gentoo this is in "the
portage tree", or in "a portage overlay".
I am working towards something I consider suitable for production
release, and wanted to ask if there are conventional blessings which I
ought to ask of the R-devel folks; How does this usually

Are there any disadvantages to using locomotive
Hi:
I had some issues and so switched to locomotive. I find it awesome. 1
click and its done.
My question - what disadvantages are there, if any? What do I lose by
using such a convenient solution.
speculation as well as facts are welcome but please define which you
are putting forwards.
Thanks in advance,
