What to install/configure?
Hi railers,
(railers? Rails-ers? How do you folks refer to yourselves?)
I''m brand spankin'' new to most of this. I''m just learning ruby, just
learning rails, just learning MySQL, and really just learning about
Apache/CGI-type stuff. I have a long background with UNIX sysadmin and
scripting (lots and lots of Perl and Bash), so the ruby is coming fast

what about Austin railers?
If Tuscon has some rail users, I know there must be some other Austin
railers out there. Have I missed some meetings that I didn''t know about?

Syntax highlighting in IRB || Script/Console
Railers,
I would like to know if there is a way of changing colors for IRB standard
input ($stdin). What I am interested in "is having IRB highlighting syntax
as I type". Among other stuff, I would like to be able to:
- set its background colours
- have differing colours for strings, variables, keywords, e.t.c.
I do use Wirble and Term-ansicolor gems, and they are fine when it

Mixed model question.
I continue to struggle with mixed models. The square zero version
of the problem that I am trying to deal with is as follows:
A number (240) of students are measured (tested; for reading
comprehension)
on 6 separate occasions. Initially (square zero) I want to treat the
test time as a factor (with 6 levels). The students are of course
``random effects''. Later I want to look at

DHTML
Please only Web 2.0 oriented people. I might not be able to implement

[Very OT] Steve Jobs, is he sick?
For us "Railers" on Mac systems we all probably watched Steve Job''s
keynote at the WWDC yesterday. Was it just me, or did Steve look
"sick"? I mean he has lost a lot of weight and his skin was very drawn.

rounded corners in rails apps ?
Hi all
I like very much rounded corners and often used thee well known nifty
Javascript approach for that, Recently I discovered Rico (
http://openrico.org), which does the same and is much simpler to use (don''t
require additional css files) and is based on prototype.js. This is all very
nice, but there is currently one problem, the latest Rico library seems to
require prototype 1.3.1,

Date Validation: The February 31st Problem
Hi Railers,
I''m wondering if anyone has found a nice solution to the problem of validating
dates to prevent things like 29th February 2005, or 31st September and so on?
I see it was discussed before...
http://wrath.rubyonrails.org/pipermail/rails/2005-March/003804.html
...but with no particularly ideal solution...

Web service SOAP URLs started failing with 1.1.4 or using 1.1.2 security patch
Railers,
I''m trying to figure out why invocations to my Web service URLs work
with Rails 1.1.2 but fail both with Rails 1.1.4 (and 1.1.5) and when I
apply the new 1.1.2 security patch to Rails 1.1.2.
It looks like they are failing with SOAP clients but succeeding with
XML-RPC clients.
The URL that used to work is of the form
http://localhost:3000/my_controller/ServiceName/api. When I

HOWTO: Install RMagick on OS X
Hello all fellow Mac OS X Railers.
I''m just setting up a new MacBook from scratch.
Everything has gone very easily, so I decide to attempt
to install RMagick from scratch once again, something
that I''ve wrestled with in the past, finally punting and
going with a DarwinPorts ImageMagick install then direct
gem install of RMagick.
Well, I had no problems and have achieved

Associating with different classes
Dear Railers,
I am toying with a new project and have a schema design question.
I have a tree-like node structure. Each of the nodes will be
associated with a single object. This associated object can be of a
variety of types.
I represent the tree through a Node class which acts_as_tree. Now
imagine three other classes--Animals, Fruits and Vegetables. Each
node will have an association
