Conditional pluralize without the number
Hi. Assume you have an array of person names. I want to generate results in my view that look like this: Abby is your friend or Abby, Bob, and Carol are your friends. So I''d like to say: <%= friends.to_sentence %> <%= pluralize(friends.count, "is") %> your <%= pluralize(friends.count, "friend") %> But because pluralize puts in the

[ActiveSupport] Patches needing review: re-organization of #to_query methods, preservation of XML/JSON content-type
Just a quick pointer to some ActiveSupport patches hoping for reviews: Puts Array#to_query and Object#to_query in the right places in ActiveSupport - http://dev.rubyonrails.org/ticket/10395 Preserve user-specified content type for XML and JSON rendering (currently it''s overridden and set to Mime::XML/Mimi::JSON - http://dev.rubyonrails.org/ticket/10388 Oh and a tiny patch for

Eager loading wierdness
Consider this problem. I have an Item that has_many Features I want to find all Items with a Feature name of ''foo''. Normally you would do this.. @items = Item.find(:all, :conditions=>["features.name = ?", ''foo''], :include=>:features) This all works fine and dandy except for this problem. If you do this... <% for item in @items %>

How do you use acts_as_ferret without rails?
I am currently using activerecord without rails and I''d like to use the acts_as_ferret plugin as it works well with activerecord. How do I take advantage of the acts_as_ferret without rails installed? Is this possible? If someone could provide me with direction on how this would be done, that would be greatly appreciated. I assume that since active record works without rails that all

regression with categorical nuisance variable
Hi, I am new to R, so I am unsure of the formula to set up this analysis. I would like to run a linear model with a continuous dependent variable (brain volume) and a continuous independent variable (age) while controlling for a categorical nuisance variable (gender). Age and brain volume are correlated. There are no gender differences in age but there are significant gender differences in brain

error using lapply with oneway_test (coin package)
Dear expeRts, I would like to use a oneway_test (from package coin) to test whether two groups differ on various variables. The variables are encoded within a data frame. Unfortunately, I obtained an error, that I don't understand. Could you please help me ? Example: library(coin) y <- as.data.frame(matrix(rnorm(200), ncol=2)) group <- as.factor(unif(100)) lapply(y,

finding ncp for t distribution
Dear R-users, I am wondering whether R implements a function returning the non central parameter of a t distribution (equivalent of the TnoncT function from SAS), given /x/ a value from a t distribution, /df /the degrees of freedom and /p/ the probability of x under this distribution. Variability Plot For Toray Microarray Data
Is there any package that allow you to perform "MA plot" like graph for Toray microarray data? Unlike Affymetrix CEL file which contain 2 values (R and G), Torray raw data only contain 1 value. MA-plot is Affymetrix specific which usually available for in (limma) package. P. Dubois [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

function optimization: reducing the computing time
Dear useRs, I have written a function that implements a Bayesian method to compare a patient's score on two tasks with that of a small control group, as described in Crawford, J. and Garthwaite, P. (2007). Comparison of a single case to a control or normative sample in neuropsychology: Development of a bayesian approach. Cognitive Neuropsychology, 24(4):343?372. The function (see

error in which(): recursive default argument reference
Dear useRs, I have written a very simple function to compute some probabilities on words (function is below). The function includes a which() statement applied to a vector of characters (word.split): sapply (word.split, function(x) which(letters==x)). This statement worked as expected when used outside the global function : > word <- "hello" > (word.split <-

Rails association and multiple indexes
Hi! If I have two models, Product and Manufacturer, of course Product belongs_to :manufacturer. A search engine would allow a user to look for a product by its name or manufacturer. Is it better to define a method like: def searchable_field "#{name} #{manufacturer.name}" end and add it as indexable field (acts_as_ferret :fields =>

plugin not loading for model? (acts_as_ferret)
Hi all, I''m using the older win32 happy backgroundrb in combination with the ''acts_as_ferret'' install as a plugin. Since I''ve installed acts_as_ferret, I haven''t been able to get backgroundrb to start. It keeps failing at the ''acts_as_ferret'' method call in one of my models. Using acts_as_ferret outside rails
How do I use a model that has "acts_as_ferret" defined outside rails? I''ve tried adding this to the top of my model: require "#{RAILS_ROOT}/vendor/plugins/acts_as_ferret/lib/acts_as_ferret.rb" and then defining RAILS_ROOT and RAILS_ENV in my app that uses the model outside rails. That got me this exception:

acts_as_ferret for Ferret 0.10
Hi all, the current acts_as_ferret trunk is now ported to Ferret 0.10. Get it while it''s hot at svn://projects.jkraemer.net/acts_as_ferret/trunk/plugin Nearly everything works, besides this: - all queries are ORed (no way to tell the QueryParser to build AND queries by default) - more_like_this is broken I''m working with Dave to fix these things soon.
