create an object from a string?
I''m trying to dynamically create an instance of an object at runtime, from a String. I have a method that returns one of a number of Strings ("Car", "Motorcycle", "Bicycle"), and when I receive the String, I then want to instantiate one of those objects. Seems like there should be a way to do it in Ruby, but maybe I''ve been up too long --

where''d we come from?
I''m curious -- how many of us came to Rails from other branches of the OO world -- Java, C# -- and how many of us came from the design or non-OO scripting worlds? Reason I ask is that I''m finding Rails a blast and very productive, but I think one reason is that I already cut my teeth on MVC and ORM during two years of writing apps with J2EE/Struts/Hibernate. And in Javaland, it

duplicate search results
i''m using Ferret 0.9.0 with acts_as_ferret (the one from svn.jkraemer.net), and i''m getting duplicate results, as described in this thread: http://rubyforge.org/pipermail/ferret-talk/2005-December/000048.html is there a way to configure the indexes created by acts_as_ferret to use :key => :id, as described in that thread? i''ve poked around in the code, and had

nuby: do models have to inherit directly from ActiveRecord?
Hello, I have a few models -- book, cd, dvd -- for which I''d like to have an abstract base superclass to hold some common stuff. That abstract class, I was thinking, would inherit from ActiveRecord. Didn''t work, though, and looking around, I found this: <http://wiki.rubyonrails.com/rails/pages/HowtoMakeAbstractModel>

:disable_with for button_to ???
With form_tag submit buttons I use the " :disable_with => ''button label while processing'' " option so that visitors with slow connections aren''t able to submit forms twice. How do I do the same thing with button_to? I''ve got several pages where there are multiple forms on the page being updated with Ajax so I can''t wrap the whole

acts_as_taggable and deleting tags
with act_as_taggable plugin, anyone know how to make tags dependent on the model they''re tagging, so the tags are deleted if the model is? i see that taggings are deleted, but the tags themselves aren''t. in acts_as_taggable.rb, i tried changing this line: has_many :tags, :through => :taggings to mirror the has_many definition for taggings, like so: has_many :tags, :through

a newbie doomed in the first introduction to rails.
Hello, Thank you for the fast responses, I really appreciate. I really enjoy being a part of such a great community. I still could not solve my problem. To make sure that I can not connect beacuse of access rights, I have started mysql server --skip-grant-tables option. (I have read the part of the manual about access rights, which I was to read in this list, but 4 AM in the morning, I had hard

respond_to not detecting JS turned on. form_to_remote problem?
I''m trying to use respond_to to redirect visitors who have JS turned off to a different page. The problem I''m having is that respond_to is sending *everybody* there. It''s not recognizing that JS is turned on in the browser. The wanted_html.rhtml file below is rendered whether I''ve got JS turned on or off. I''ve looked at the Accept headers being sent

preventing indexing of an acts_as_ferret''d model?
Hi, this is hopefully an easy one, but I''ve gone through the api and searched past forum entries, and am drawing a blank. I have a model that with acts_as_ferret mixed in to it, which is working fine. But I want users to be able to set a ''private'' attribute on the model, and when it''s set to true, create and update methods would skip indexing. So, how can I

form_remote_tag breaks inside table
i guess its better form to keep form tags outside of table tags anyways, but it took a lot of trial and error to figure out thats why @params were no longer showing up after switching form_tag to form_remote_tag. not sure if this is a prototype ''bug'' or ''feature'' or what. but my next step was to switch to a seperate form tag for each row to reduce needless

syntax for specifying :html fallback on form_remote_tag
Has anyone gotten the :html option for specifying a ''fallback'' action if javascript''s not enabled working on form_remote_tag (or remote_form_for)? I can''t figure out how to specify the action that''s supposed to be invoked if js _is_ enabled. Or maybe I''m just misunderstanding how this thing is supposed to work. I was assuming

dom id on form_remote_tag
I want to make use of a form_remote_tag to submit a form asynchronously. Easy done. However, we also want to add an observe_form tag to check for some value changes while the form is being entered. The observe_form tag needs a dom id to work on but I can''t see how to enter an html option for the dom id of the form on the form_remote_tag. Any ideas? Here is the form tag so far...

Problem with RJS and/or Prototype.js =>ResponseText is blank
Hi, I''ve got a real head-scratcher. I''ve got a standard Ajax form using form_remote_tag, which calls a controller action which adds a comment and then sends back some JS via RJS which updates a few items on the page. It did work fine but (and I''ve no idea what has happened) now it doesn''t. It calls the controller action but gets an empty response back and
