Release of optimbase, optimsimplex and neldermead packages
Dear R users,
I am pleased to announce the release of three new R packages: optimbase,
optimsimplex, and neldermead.
- optimbase provides a set of commands to manage an abstract optimization
method. The goal is to provide a building block for a large class of
specialized optimization methods. This package manages: the number of
variables, the minimum and maximum bounds, the number of non linear

Online course- Mixed Effects Models
Dr. Andrzej Galecki will present his online course "Mixed
Effects Models with Applications" May 12 ? June 9 at
statistics.com.
This course will explain the basic theory of linear and
non-linear mixed effects models, including hierarchical
linear models (HLM). It will outline the algorithms used
for estimation, primarily for models involving normally
distributed errors, and will provide

Sweave and kile
Dear R-users,
I want to give a try to Sweave and Latex but I am having some problems
compiling my .Rnw files within Kile. I have followed the recommendations
given in http://tolstoy.newcastle.edu.au/R/e5/help/08/10/4277, but they do
not seem to address my particular problem.
I am using R 2.11.0 and Kile v 2.0.83 on an OpenSUSE11.2 installation (KDE
4.3 environment). According to the log (see

Noisy objective functions
While working on 'random walk' applications, I got interested in
optimizing noisy objective functions. As an (artificial) example, the
following is the Rosenbrock function, where Gaussian noise of standard
deviation `sd = 0.01` is added to the function value.
fn <- function(x)
(1+rnorm(1, sd=0.01)) * adagio::fnRosenbrock(x)
To smooth out the noise, define another

Problem with vignette compilation during R CMD check
Dear R-users,
I am going through the last steps of package prep before submission to CRAN
and I have the following problem. My package contains a single vignette
written in optimbase.Rnw and that in stored in /inst/doc. optimbase.Rnw
contains multiple \input{} statements that refer to .tex files stored in
/inst/latex.ref/, e.g.:
\input{../latex.ref/optimbase-package.tex}
When I compile my Rnw

Changing 'record' option in open graphics device
Hi,
I am wondering if there is a way to change the value of the "record" option
in a graphics device that is already open (and accepts this option). I
don''t want to open a new device with, for example "dev.new(record=T)", but
just want to change the settings of the current device. This can be done by
pointing and clicking on the "history" tab of a

Problem with viewports, print.trellis and more/newpage
Dear R-users,
I have got the following problem. I need to create 4x2 arrays of
xyplot's on several pages. The plots are created within a loop and
plotted using the print function. It seems that I cannot find the proper
grid syntax with my viewports, and the more/newpage arguments.
The following script is a simplification but hopefully will suffice to
illustrate my problem. Any suggestion

Understanding padding in lattice
Dear R-users,
I am trying to understand what the different padding arguments in
trellis.par.set are exactly controlling the space around lattice plots.
I have used the following code as a basis for testing but it did not
really help me to visualize how the value of each argument changes the
margins and the plotting area. I guess a better way to visualize the
effects of these padding items
