New versions of Matrix and lme4 packages for R-2.4.0
Versions 0.9975-1 of the Matrix and lme4 packages will soon be available on CRAN for use with R version 2.4.0 or later. Purpose of the packages: The Matrix package provides S4 classes and methods for sparse and dense matrices. The lme4 package provides functions for fitting and assessing linear or generalized linear mixed effects models (also called multilevel models). Like the Matrix package,

[R-pkgs] New versions of Matrix and lme4 packages for R-2.4.0
Thanks, Douglas. It works. Only one gripe. Every time I want to try a new version of your software, I have to get, compile, patch the latest bleeding edge version of R as well: ERROR: This R is version 2.3.1 package 'Matrix' needs R >= 2.4.0 Douglas Bates wrote: > Versions 0.9975-1 of the Matrix and lme4 packages will soon be available on > CRAN for use with R

R vs Stata on generalized linear mixed models: glmer and xtmelogit
Hello, I have compared the potentials of R and Stata about GLMM, analysing the dataset 'ohio' in the package 'faraway' (the same dataset is analysed with GEE in the book 'Extending the linear model with R' by Julian Faraway). Basically, I've tried the 2 commands 'glmmPQL' and 'glmer' of R and the command 'xtmelogit' of Stata. If I'm not

New versions of Matrix and lme4 packages
Version 0.98-1 of the lme4 package and of the Matrix package are now on CRAN. This version provides the adaptive Gauss-Hermite quadrature (AGQ) method for fitting generalized linear mixed models. A new generic function mcmcsamp has been added with a method for objects in the "lmer" (linear mixed model fit or generalized linear mixed-effects model fit) class. This function provides a

CRAN versions of lme4/Matrix don't appear to work with R 2.1.1
I am currently using R 2.1.1 under Windows and I do not seem to be able to load the current versions of lme4/Matrix. I have run 'update.packages.' I understand this is still experimental software but I would like access to a working version. Thanks. lme4_0.6-1 uploaded
I have uploaded release 0.6-1 of the lme4 package to the incoming area on CRAN. I expect it will be transferred to the archive within a couple of days, after which Uwe's Windows build daemon should be able to get it to build a Windows version. The lme4 package itself is a pure R package (i.e. it does not contain any code to be compiled) but it depends on the Matrix_0.8-7 package which has a

New Matrix and lme4: Must reinstall lme4 if got new Matrix
We have released to CRAN a new version of the (recommended) package Matrix, and of package lme4 yesterday. Anyone who gets the new version of Matrix *MUST* re-install lme4 -- if (s)he is using lme4 at all. Technical details about that further below. The fact that yesterday's version number of Matrix is 0.9995875-2, indicates that Matrix' version is indeed approaching 1.0 (*), and

Incompatability of lme4 and Matrix packages
I just installed R 2.4 on a windows machine and installed the lme4 package version 0.9975-1. Unfortunately this version requires the 0.9975-2 version of the Matrix package which I cannot seem to find. It seems the newest version I can find is 0.9975-1. Is there somewhere I could find this newer version. Mark Lyman

lme4 and function 'cholmod_start' not provided by package 'Matrix' / Ubuntu
Hello all, Using Ubuntu 9.04 and R 2.8.1. For a project I need to use the Zelig package, which in turn wants to use the lme4 package. When trying to use Zelig and it tries to its required packages I get the following error message. Error in dyn.load(file, DLLpath = DLLpath, ...) : function 'cholmod_start' not provided by package 'Matrix' Error in loadModelDeps(model) :

identical results with PQL and Laplace options in lmer function (package lme4)
Dear R users I encounter a problem when i perform a generalized linear mixed model (binary data) with the lmer function (package lme4) with R 2.1.0 on windows XP and the latest version of package "lme4" (0.96-1) and "matrix" (0.96-2) both options "PQL" and "Laplace" for the method argument in lmer function gave me the same results (random and fixed effects

Latest revision of lme4 requires 'Matrix' >= 0.995.2 but that version is not available on CRAN
I just updated the packages on my pc (windows xp). When loading lme4 I get > library(lme4) Error: package 'Matrix' 0.995-1 was found, but >= 0.995.2 is required by 'lme4' 'Matrix' 0.995-1 is indeed installed on my computer, but update.packages() does not capture a never version; and seemingly for good reasons: When looking at CRAN, the new version of Matrix is

lme4 error after Matrix update
Dear all, after recently updating my R-packages I am unable to work with lme4, since it does not load. What I get is this: Error in inDL(x, as.logical(local), as.logical(now), ...) : function 'cholmod_l_start' not provided by package 'Matrix' In addition: Warning messages: 1: package 'lme4' was built under R version 2.8.1 2: package 'lattice' was built under R

lme4 extracting individual variance components
Hi, For further calculations I need to extract indivdual Variances of different random effects from a fitted model. I found out how to extract the correlations (VarCorr(m1)@reSumry$group1) but I was not able to find a way to extract the other components individually. To extract the Residuals I tried: (ranef(m1)@ stdErr) which unfortunately did not work. Thank you very much for your help!

loading lme4 fails - "function 'cholmod_l_start' not provided by package 'Matrix'"
Hello UseRs, I've just tried to load the lme4 package and got the error message, "function 'cholmod_l_start' not provided by package 'Matrix'". I downloaded the latest version of lme4 and its required packages (lattice and Matrix) as suggested in the archives and still got this message. The FAQ and archives suggested to check the R version requirements, but I'm

imposing constraints on the covariance matrix of random effects in lme4?
Hello all, I am using lme4 to fit some mixed logistic regressions. I need to impose an identification constraint of the following form: (1 sig12) (sig12 sig22) and have not figured out how to do it, i.e., sig11 = 1 but the rest of the parameters are free to vary. Is this possible and, if so, how? I've been looking through the archive and help to no avail, but perhaps I'm just
