Debian packages for R-1.3.0
I have installed the binary packages for Debian GNU/Linux release 2.3
(woody) in the U.S. mirror of the CRAN archive. They should propagate
to the main CRAN archive within a day and to the other mirrors within
two days.
These packages have been compiled with gcc-3.0 and g77-3.0. I believe
the testing distribution currently provides only a snapshot of
gcc-3.0, not the latest released version, so

R-beta: New r-base package for Debian-2.0
I have recompiled the r-base package for Debian-2.0 with readline
support. I still haven't determined why the configure script does
not detect the readline library on one machine but does detect it
on another where I compiled this.
The package is available as
ftp://franz.stat.wisc.edu/pub/R/bin/i386-linux/Debian-2.0/r-base_0.61.1-3_i386.deb
and should appear on the other CRAN mirrors by

Packages for RedHat 4.2, Debian 1.3
Doug Bates has succeeded in building rpm's for RedHat 4.2:

These are on CRAN now.

R-beta: RPM and .deb packages for R-0.61
This may have been announced before but there are now both Debian
GNU/Linux and RedHat Linux packages for R-0.61 on the CRAN archive
sites. The master site for CRAN is
http://www.ci.tuwien.ac.at/R/
That site provide a list of available mirror sites. Within the CRAN
archive sites the pre-compiled packages for Linux are located in the
bin/i386-linux directory.
Under RedHat you can install

Debian package for R-0.61 uploaded
I have uploaded a Debian package r-base_0.61.0-2_i386.deb to the
incoming directory at ftp.ci.tuwien.ac.at. This package is built
against libc5, not libc6. Turns out that was a bit more complicated
than I had hoped.
I have also created an RPM file for the same binary distribution and
will upload that shortly as r-base-0.61.0-2.i386.rpm. I enclose some
information regarding the two packaged

NLME-3.1 package available for R-0.90.0
With the assistance of Saikat DebRoy we have produced an nlme package
(linear and nonlinear mixed-effects models) for R (see
http://www.r-project.org/ for details about R). The nlme package for
R requires R-0.90.0, which was released earlier today.
Also released today was NLME 3.2 for S-PLUS. We will be working on
incorporating the changes from NLME 3.1 to 3.2 into the R version but

Re: make.search.html() without write permission in R.hom e( ) (PR#6664)
So this is on Windows, then? This is documented somewhere (don't remember):
If the package is not located under $R_HOME/library, then the html help will
not be able to find it. Don't think there's a known work-around.
Cheers,
Andy

Access to cran.us.r-project.org
I am the maintainer of one of the CRAN mirrors in the U.S.,
cran.us.r-project.org. It appears that this site has been
inaccessible since Friday.
This has me puzzled because I can connect to the same machine through
ssh and I can see that the http daemon (apache) is running. In fact I
can make an http connection from this machine to this machine and from
other machines on any of our subnets to

Copyrights for R contributed libraries
I have been packaging both R and the R contributed libraries for the
Debian GNU/Linux operating system. Right now if anyone installs
Debian Linux on an Intel machine or a DEC Alpha they will have the
option of installing R as a regular part of the operating system. I
think this is a good way of getting wider distribution of high quality
statistical software. The Linux community is growing

Prototype nls library for R using closures
I just uploaded to CRAN a prototype nls (nonlinear least squares)
library for R. It is far from being finished but I am asking for
this preliminary version to be installed in the src/contrib/Devel
section of CRAN so others can see the use of function closures
to emulate the behaviour of objects in languages like Java.
It will be a couple of days before the file is installed in CRAN and
has a

R-beta: command-line editing not working in Debian Linux version
I get great flexibility with command-line editing through the "readline"
library in the "bash" editor and the "ncftp" tool. S-Plus has this editing
and I see in the preliminary "Notes on R: A Programming Environment for Data
Analysis and Graphics", page 65, that "R -e" might give this functionality.
Typically, one can use either vi or emacs

An SPSS save file for testing
Saikat DebRoy is working on a revised "foreign" package (currently in
the src/contrib/Devel area on CRAN) that will include the ability to
read the SPSS save format. Since we don't use SPSS we don't have easy
access to a sample data set and have been using PSPP (see
http://pspp.stat.wisc.edu/) to generate test data. It would be more
realistic to have a small, redistributable

R benchmarking program
Hi All,
I've just rebuild the latest R with the Goto BLAS on our new Intel quad core machines. I did a few basic matrix calculations, and I was very impressed by the performance I saw. I wonder if anyone has a more rigorous benchmarking program for R. I downloaded a old R test/benchmarking program (see below), and this didn't work with the current R, and so I wondered if anyone could

forwarded message from Dirk Eddelbuettel <edd@debian.org>
Dirk's mail to r-devel bounced because of his peculiar return
address. He asked me to forward this for him.
P.S. I have tried building R with atlas2 on a Debian GNU/Linux 2.2
system but I have not yet managed to out-fox the configure script to
get it to use the desired shared object library.
