new versions of grid and lattice
Hi
There are new versions of the grid and lattice packages on CRAN:
grid 0.2 and lattice 0.3-0
These packages are still _under development_ (they are in
CRAN/src/contrib/Devel)
There have been some bug fixes and, especially in lattice, there are lots of
new features.
Descriptions of the changes are included below.
If you have any grid code, it may break under the new version because of a

Thanks! (was panel.axis() & grid/lattice settings)
Deepayan, Paul:
Thanks very much for the very useful leads. I just spent some time this
afternoon implementing your suggestions and my early test results are very
encouraging.
Paul, I understand the potential device re-sizing issue with the convert
family of functions in grid, and will be in touch in case it becomes
problematic for my applications. I very much look forward to your upcoming

grid.ls() after grid.remove() fails
Dr Murrell and others,
It seems grid.ls() fails after any use of grid.remove(). It gives an
infinite recursion error even in the simplest cases, and no matter
what arguments are passed to grid.ls.
> library(grid)
> grid.newpage()
> grid.lines(name="foo")
> grid.ls()
foo
> grid.remove("foo")
> grid.ls()
Error: evaluation nested too deeply: infinite recursion

Creating grid graphics with grid.layout
Hi,
I recently created a function which uses grid with a viewport
constructed with grid.layout() to position four plots on a plot device.
My question is what's the best way to programatically traverse each
element of the viewport?
The grid is 5x5 and the four plots occupy positions (2,2), (4,2), (2,4),
and (4,4).
Here's the viewport code:
pushViewport(
viewport(

Rotated viewports in Grid
Hi all,
I'm trying to generate a plot containing a scatterplot, with marginal
densityplots for x and y.
However, when I try to generate a vertical densityplot, I get the
message "warning: can't clip to rotated viewport", and nothing shows
up. I'm probably misunderstanding how viewports are meant to be used,
so if someone could give me a hint, I'd be most grateful.

hexbin and grid - input data values as coordinates
Dear all,
I am trying to use hexbin and read the very interesting article on grid
( http://www.ci.tuwien.ac.at/Conferences/useR-2004/Keynotes/Murrell.pdf ) and am hoping for some advice from more experienced users of hexbin.
I am trying to visualise a data and fit a straight line trough it. For
example, here is how I would do it in the usual way
# simulate data
x <- rnorm(1000)
y <-

grid Graphics by Paul Murrell
Dear All,
I've been trying to format a plot output using par() with mfrow, fin,
mai, etc and basically it's proving to be a pain. I searched on google
and found that Paul Murrell had written a grid Graphics program which
seems perfect. However, when I try and use say viewport() I just get a
function not found error. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong please?
Thank-you

lattice/grid: problem with viewports for strips with zero height
PROBLEM
# Allocating strip labels by the function strip.fun():
strip.test()
# Result: No strips: ok. No strings: NOT OK.
# The distance ``y.text=unit(6,"points")'' is ignored;
# the strings are not seen on the output.
TRIALS FOR WORKAROUNDS
strip.test( strip.lines=1 )
# Result: 2 strips: ok, but not whished. 2 strings: ok.

global option settings for grid and lattice?
Hello,
I'd like to be able to set options for grid and lattice globally, once
for all subsequent plots, just like what ps.options() does. I walked
through the functions of Grid and didn't find it. The following are
related things that are available:
get.gpar()
trellis.par.set()
any ideas? thanks.

Making use of names of viewports (grid)
The following code, though not brilliant, works on an A4 page. It
might look odd on other devices of a very different size.
=============X8------- cut here ----------------------------
require(grid)
wide <- 15
vps <- grid.layout(nrow = 3, ncol = 4,
widths = unit(rep(1, 4), rep("null", 4)),
heights = unit(c(99, 1, 99),

exact relative positioning of lattice plots
Hello,
I have two lattice plots for which panel.height is fixed. I am trying to position them in a column so that there is exactly half an inch of vertical space between them. This would be a simple task if I were not fixing panel.height. But given that I am, I can't find a way to put exactly half an inch of space between the plots. Is there a way?
I've checked the Sarkar and

Lattice device page options-margins
I am using lattice to make figures as pdfs:
trellis.device(device = "pdf",file = "Figure6.pdf",color = FALSE)
I need to specify some blank space on the left-hand margins (the pages
will be bound so we need about 0.5 inch)). I have tried a number of
solutions but none seems to work (e.g. par.set). Can this be done when
initiating the plotting device? Or is the some other way

viewport bug in 2.8.0?: Error: Cannot pop the top-level viewport (grid and graphics output mixed?)
I get the following error message followed by instability in R after the
error message:
Error: Cannot pop the top-level viewport (grid and graphics output
mixed?)
Have reduced something much more complex in my code to a simple test case.
I run the following and then resize the window:
X = seq (1,10)
Y = X^2
opar <- par(no.readonly=TRUE, mar = c(2.5, 3.1, 1, 2))

Problem when combining dotplot() and textplot() using grid
Hi everyone.
I want to solve the following problem. I have a data.frame and I
create a dotplot using lattice.
Then I want to use the grid-package to create a combined graphic which
contains the dotplot as well as a textplot() (using package gplots) of
the data.frame next to the dotplot.
Example code:
library(lattice)
library(grid)
library(gplots)
xx <- data.frame(f=factor(rep(1:5, each=5)),

help with using grid to modify ggplot/lattice plots
I want to use grid to modify some boxplots made using ggplot. I would
really appreciate if somebody could guide me to a resource on how to
use grid to modify such graphics. I guess the basic approach will be
similar to using grid to modify lattice graphics. To that extent
something that explains use of grid to modify lattice graphics may
also be useful.
I have gone through vignettes in the grid

ggplot 2 - editing in the "panel_1_1" viewport
Hi All,
I am trying to find out how to access the components of a ggplot plot, and I
found this reply from Paul Murrel
http://www.nabble.com/navigating-ggplot-viewports-tt14826352.html#a15056223.
I tried it, and it works.
However, I am trying to develop some functions that will do the drawing
"automatically", and usually I will not know the full name of the grob that
has the layout vp,

Trouble using grid.layout in Sweave
Hi!
I am troubled by Sweave which I want to use in order to plot graphics which
I build up successively by the use of grid.layout. Here is the code:
<<fig=TRUE,label=evolDist,height=6in,width=3in,pdf=FALSE>>=
## combined plot via grid viewports
grid.newpage()
pushViewport(viewport(layout=grid.layout(2,1)))
vlay <- function(x,y) viewport(layout.pos.row=x, layout.pos.col=y)
