Must one be a web page designer to make use of RoR?
Hey guys, I''m new to the world of web site development. Although I''m in the process of learning RoR, I''m not a graphics artist nor a web developer or web site designer. With that being said, does anyone have any suggestions for tools to use to create the actual interface for a web app based on a RoR framework? Obviously the default output of RoR is fine for

checkbox_tag outside a form?
Is it possible to use checkbox_tag outside a form? I''ve put it in a view and it renders but I get nothing back in the params hash. Is there a way to get the value? Like maybe with some JS onsubmit to populate the params hash myself? Thanks, Bill -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL:

ROR website''s weblog not viewable on internet explorer
Does anyone know why the weblog at http://weblog.rubyonrails.org/ is often messed up, with the first or first and second topics left-shifted and melded with the Rails logo, the Live Search box and the page''s menu? This happens on all my boxes that run Internet Explorer 6 (IE6). I checked it on Firefox and the page appears correctly. While it''s easy to argue "just use

degrading gracefully - how to tell if JS is enabled?
Is there a RoR best practice wrt determing in a visitor''s browser has JS disabled? Is there even a way to find out? I''ve got a couple of pages in my app that are not going to degrade gracefully at all. I really need to point a visitor who has JS disabled down a seperate path. Any ideas? AJAX/CSS issue (more UI focused)
All, This isn''t strictly a problem or issue with RoR but I wondered if someone might have some insight. I have a DIV on a page which I am using to "preview" the contents of a URL provided by the user. Basically, when the user clicks on a link, I do an AJAX call to an action which uses Net::HTTP to request the URL in question and then update the DIVs innerHTML attribute

guides on css strategy
I''m having to design the UI to a small site, and that means dabbling in css. I''ve never been able to get any kind of decent idea as to how to decide on classes and id-ing. I''ve had a sniff around the internet without success: people seem to be as clueless as me. I''ve even examined the css/markup of a few sites and it hasn''t been enlightening. Does

Ror has problems with memory usage??
I saw this on a forum for MODx (a CMS which seem very good, built on standards, with clean XHTML/CSS, using PHP). "RoR is a killer application, but is either a crusher when it comes to memory usage or SQL usage. Even simple seeming things can kill a server if it''s not dedicated to the application. In addition, RoR is much more complex really than MODx if you''re not

Programming with designers in mind
Gents, We''re hard at work on a new Rails app. We''re a small group of developers...not a web designer in the bunch. We know CSS enough to be dangerous, but we shy away from the "softer" skills (all the while envious of those with that capability). We intend to grow our application in terms of functionality, but I need to make sure we keep an eye towards

ror/lighttpd - HTML files via port 80 become application/octet-stream?
Hi everybody I am trying to get RoR to work with lighttpd. Nearly there, but I am stuck with a strange phenomenon. If I configure lighttpd to serve pages on say port 2000, I can get at my testapp fine and see the "Welcome aboard" page. However, if I configure lighttpd to use port 80, I get a download prompt from my browser. If I access my URI like

RoR & Lightbox
Has anybody else had a problem with using Lightbox in their RoR apps? I include all the necessary files in application.rhtml and then attempt to use the Lightbox functionality in pages and such. Nothing happens except that a new page opens up with the link to the image I was attempting to show with Lightbox. I''ve even gone so far as to strip out everything except the necessary
