R ORM?
Hi,
Does anyone know of an R ORM (Object Relational Mapper)? I'm thinking of
something similar to sqlalchemy (http://www.sqlalchemy.org/).
Alternatively or additionally, can people offer suggestions about managing
relational databases from R. I'm currently using postgresql, but would
like a flexible solution that works across different databases, hence the
enquiry about ORMs.
Please

Plans to intigrate ObjectGraph in to Rails
Are there any plans to move the schema definition from migrations to the
model, where it should be?
Like og does, which I think is used by the ruby Nitro framework...
ObjectGraph:

Example code:

class Post
property :title, String, :sql => ''VARCHAR2(32) NOT NULL''

Check if user is in right group
What is the best way of checking this?
I have 3 tables:
groups
users
group_members
class GroupMember < ActiveRecord::Base
belongs_to :group
belongs_to :user
validates_uniqueness_of :user_id, :scope => "group_id"
Then I want a method here that checks if a given user is a member of a
given group. What is the right way of doing that?

merb_sequel raketasks not working?
I''m trying to run on trunk. When I run "rake -T" I get an error:
undefined local variable or method `full_config'' for Merb::Orms::Sequel:Module
I''m not 100% sure that I haven''t messed something up, so I hesitate to
cry "bug" without checking with everyone. Is anyone else seeing this?
P.S. I''m running merb trunk installed as a gem,

Question on Rails 3 : forms && ORM && ActiveModel
I''m a Django/Catalyst user that''s evaluating Rails ... I need a Ruby
framework, and I''m trying to see if learning Rails is worth it or I
should just go for Sinatra + various libs available.
Django has a couple of things I like ...
1) the Forms API
In Django I like that it''s being decoupled from models ... form
objects have fields with validation rules that

Rack, Camping 2.0++
===
1. Camping on Rack
===
I''ve just finished rewriting Camping to use Rack in the "core". I got rid of
(a little less) than 1kB in camping.rb and removed lots of un-necessary files
(lib/server/*.rb, fastcgi.rb & mongrel.rb).
bin/camping does now only provide WEBrick, Mongrel and console-support and
should only be used in development. It uses Rack::ShowExceptions to catch

[LLVMdev] http://llvm.org/perf/ instability: some clues
Daniel, Tobias, Renato and myself have been looking a little bit at the
potential underlying reason
for why http://llvm.org/perf/ is instable, and have found some clues. I want
to share them here
to give people with more experience in the frameworks used by LNT (flask,
sqlalchemy, wsgi, .)
a chance to check if our reasoning below seems plausible.

Why does''nt rails pick up more metadata from a mysql schema?
Hi,
when I define a db column to be non-nullable or of length 20 or as
numeric, I would expect rails to validate that, but that doesn''t seem
to be the case.
Any idea why that is? The metadata is accessible, at least in the mysql case.
I am using rails 1.0 with mysql 5.

How can I improve a Ruby on Rails code that hast a lot of SQL as strings?
Hello Railists,
I have a piece of Ruby on Rails code that has a complex SQL query (well, not
that complex, but as far as I know beyond the ORM capabilities) and for my
taste it has too many strings and harcoded values. I''d like to improve it as
much as possible, so my question is open ended, what else can I do to
improve it?
Some particular issues I have

Ackbar - ActiveRecord Adapter for KirbyBase
= About Ackbar
Ackbar is an adapter for ActiveRecord (the Rails ORM layer) to the KirbyBase
pure-ruby plain-text DBMS. Because KirbyBase does not support SQL, joins or
transactions, this is not a 100% fit. There are some changes to the ActiveRecord
interface (see below), but it may still be useful in some cases.

Object graphs
Guys,
I''m designing an application currently that will ultimately be implemented
in either Rails or php5 (most likely Rails).
While I''ve coded many PHP (pre-5) applications in the past, OO support was
so weak that my OO designs were never truly divorced from the limitations
of the language, thus I never had to consider this problem.
The question is: how does Rails (and how do

UML
In Rolling with Ruby on Rails tutorial -
http://www.onlamp.com/pub/a/onlamp/2005/01/20/rails.html - I saw that to
introduce a new element to my domain, I needed to define it in a table,
generate a model element with a similar name and the class would
autoamtically take the attributes from the table definition. Is it
possible to do this in the other direction... i.e to take the class

We can''t 100% remove our unit tests from the database, can we?
I hope this isn''t too rambly. This is sort of a brain dump of a
subject I''ve been thinking about for months as I''ve used RSpec.
Let''s say we''ve got a simple query method, that will find all the
users in the DB older than 18. Our model could look like
class User < ActiveRecord::Base
def self.find_older_than(age)
find :all, :conditions =>

FastCGI: comm with (dynamic) server ...../dispatch.fcgi aborted: (first read) idle timeout (30 sec)
Hello,
I just did a "gem update" on my server updating to the latest version.
After this none of my scripts work.
In apache error log I get:
FastCGI: comm with (dynamic) server
"/home/user/public_html/dispatch.fcgi" aborted: (first read) idle
timeout (30 sec)
My only guess is that the problem is related to the fastCGI binding but
I have no idea what to look for. I

I''ve got some more general questions and ideas I''m hoping to run by

more experience than any place else I know - plus a general

merbful_authentication
Since there are so many efforts at the moment to port restful_authentication
I figured I''d put a repo up so that it can be a collaborative effort.
You can pick up a copy of the repo at
git clone http://snatcht.com/git/merbful_authentication.git
at the moment the app is in a branch. Not in the master.
get the branch by
