USB sticks show on one set of devices in zpool, different devices in format
Hello, I had snv_111b running for a while on a HP DL160G5. With two 16GB USB sticks comprising the mirrored rpool for boot. And four 1TB drives comprising another pool, pool1, for data. So that''s been working just fine for a few months. Yesterday I get it into my mind to upgrade the OS to latest, then was snv_127. That worked, and all was well. Also did an upgrade to the

SUMMARY: mounting datasets from a read-only pool with aid of tmpfs
Hello all, I''d like to report a tricky situation and a workaround I''ve found useful - hope this helps someone in similar situations. To cut the long story short, I could not properly mount some datasets from a readonly pool, which had a non-"legacy" mountpoint attribute value set, but the mountpoint was not available (directory absent or not empty). In this case

Expanding a root pool
I''m attempting to expand a root pool for a VMware VM that is on an 8GB virtual disk. I mirrored it to a 20GB disk and detached the 8GB disk. I did "installgrub" to install grub onto the second virtual disk, but I get a kernel panic when booting. Is there an extra step I need to perform to get this working? Basically I did this: 1. Created a new 20GB virtual disk. 2. Booted

Problem w/ b95 + ZFS (version 11) - seeing fair number of errors on multiple machines
Hi, After upgrading to b95 of OSOL/Indiana, and doing a ZFS upgrade to the newer revision, all arrays I have using ZFS mirroring are displaying errors. This started happening immediately after ZFS upgrades. Here is an example: ormandj at neutron.corenode.com:~$ zpool status pool: rpool state: DEGRADED status: One or more devices has experienced an unrecoverable error. An attempt was

add device to mirror rpool in sol11exp
In my new oracle server, sol11exp, it''s using multipath device names... Presently I have two disks attached: (I removed the other 10 disks for now, because these device names are so confusing. This way I can focus on *just* the OS disks.) 0. c0t5000C5003424396Bd0 <SEAGATE-ST32000SSSUN2.0-0514 cyl 3260 alt 2 hd 255 sec 252> /scsi_vhci/disk at g5000c5003424396b

zfs allow does not work for rpool
I am trying to give a general user permissions to create zfs filesystems in the rpool. zpool set=delegation=on rpool zfs allow <user> create rpool both run without any issues. zfs allow rpool reports the user does have create permissions. zfs create rpool/test cannot create rpool/test : permission denied. Can you not allow to the rpool? -- This message posted from opensolaris.org

sharing a ssd between rpool and l2arc
Hi, as Richard Elling wrote earlier: "For more background, low-cost SSDs intended for the boot market are perfect candidates. Take a X-25V @ 40GB and use 15-20 GB for root and the rest for an L2ARC. For small form factor machines or machines with max capacity of 8GB of RAM (a typical home system) this can make a pleasant improvement over a HDD-only implementation." For the upcoming

How to rename rpool. Is that recommended ?
Hello, I have a situation where a host, which is booted off its ''rpool'', need to temporarily import the ''rpool'' of another host, edit some files in it, and export the pool back retaining its original name ''rpool''. Can this be done ? Here is what I am trying to do: # zpool import -R /a rpool temp-rpool # zfs set mountpoint=/mnt

Reboots when importing old rpool
I have a fresh install of Solaris 11 Express on a new SSD. I have inserted the old hard disk, and tried to import it, with: # zpool import -f <long id number> Old_rpool but the computer reboots. Why is that? On my old hard disk, I have 10-20 BE, starting with OpenSolaris 2009.06 and upgraded to b134 up to snv_151a. I also have a WinXP entry in GRUB. This hard disk is partitioned, with a

Beginner Question: Limited conf: file-based storage pools vs. FSs directly on rpool
Hi, everyone! I have a beginner''s question: I must configure a small file server. It only has two disk drives, and they are (forcibly) destined to be used in a mirrored, hot-spare configuration. The OS is installed and working, and rpool is mirrored on the two disks. The question is: I want to create some ZFS file systems for sharing them via CIFS. But given my limited configuration:

Single-disk rpool with inconsistent checksums, import fails
Hello all, I have an oi_148a PC with a single root disk, and since recently it fails to boot - hangs after the copyright message whenever I use any of my GRUB menu options. Booting with an oi_148a LiveUSB I had around since installation, I ran some zdb traversals over the rpool and zpool import attempts. The imports fail by running the kernel out of RAM (as recently discussed in the list with

Killing an EFI label
Since this seems to be a ubiquitous problem for people running ZFS, even though it''s really a general Solaris admin issue, I''m guessing the expertise is actually here, so I''m asking here. I found lots of online pages telling how to do it. None of them were correct or complete. I think. I seem to have accomplished it in a somewhat hackish fashion, possibly not

Moving rpool disks
We need to move the disks comprising our mirrored rpool on a Solaris 10 U9 x86_64 (not SPARC) system. We''ll be relocating both drives to a different controller in the same system (should go from c1* to c0*). We''re curious as to what the best way is to go about this? We''d love to be able to just relocate the disks and update the system BIOS to boot off the drives in

Changing rpool device paths/drivers
Hello all, It was often asked and discussed on the list about "how to change rpool HDDs from AHCI to IDE mode" and back, with the modern routine involving reconfiguration of the BIOS, bootup from separate live media, simple import and export of the rpool, and bootup from the rpool. The documented way is to reinstall the OS upon HW changes. Both are inconvenient to say the least.

reconstruct recovery of rpool zpool and zfs file system with bad sectors
Folks I posted this question on (OpenSolaris - Help) without any replies http://opensolaris.org/jive/thread.jspa?threadID=129436&tstart=0 and am re-posting here in the hope someone can help ... I have updated the wording a little too (in an attempt to clarify) I currently use OpenSolaris on a Toshiba M10 laptop. One morning the system wouldn''t boot OpenSolaris 2009.06 (it was simply

zpool import -f rpool hangs
I had the rpool with two sata disks in the miror. Solaris 10 5.10 Generic_141415-08 i86pc i386 i86pc Unfortunately the first disk with grub loader has failed with unrecoverable block write/read errors. Now I have the problem to import rpool after the first disk has failed. So I decided to do: "zpool import -f rpool" only with second disk, but it''s hangs and the system is

Restore a ZFS Root Mirror
Hi all, after installing OpenSolaris 2008.05 in VirtualBox I''ve created a ZFS Root Mirror by: "zfs attach rpool Disk B" and it works like a charm. Now I tried to restore the rpool from the worst Case Scenario: The Disk the System was installed to (Disk A) fails. I replaced the Disk A with another virtual Disk C and tried to restore the rpool, but my Problem is that I
