Parasite and camping_generator 0.2.0
Announcing the the 0.2.0 release of parasite and the camping_generator.
Parasite (from the project page -- http://parasite.rubyforge.org/):
Camping app developers no longer have any reason to envy their Ruby on
Rails friends: Parasite brings generators, environments, and other
Rails-y goodness to the world of Camping app development.
Parasite is currently at version 0.2. The Parasite package is

Pimpin'' a patch: moving the bin/camping logic to classes
Hello,
Zimbatm suggested the best way to push a patch into camping was to
take my case to the people. So here it is. If you want to jump
straight to the patch:

Goal: Move the logic in the camping command line launcher into several classes
Why? In the next version of parasite (http://parasite.rubyforge.org)

Dream Ledger
Hello Fellow Campers,
I''m feeling crazy tonight and thought I''d go ahead and announce my new
little project riding on the Camping framework: Dream Ledger
(http://www.dreamledger.com).
The app was written to scratch a personal itch, which is the simple
fact that I wanted an easy way to record my nightly dreams and sleep
experiences. Think about it as ''dream

Camping with Dr. Nic
Campers. Dr. Nic.
The new migrations in Camping''s trunk are very nice. They also open
the door (just an inch) to using Dr. Nic''s Magic Models with Camping.
Here''s my stab at ''er:
http://require.errtheblog.com/camping/blog.rb
Run that against Camping trunk. Don''t forget to `sudo gem install
dr_nic_magic_models`.

Squatting
Hey Campers,
I liked Camping so much that I had to "port" it to Perl. My framework is
called Squatting (as in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squatting), and you can
get it from the following places:
http://search.cpan.org/dist/Squatting/
http://github.com/beppu/squatting/tree/master
It''s not a straight port of the Camping code, because Camping uses some
weird Ruby idioms that

Rv 3 released, with cluster support
Hey Campers,
Ditch that pup-tent for Camping deployment. Maybe. Either way, drive
around in Rv 3, newly released *right at this moment*.

Testing when camping
I have considered writing some small camping apps for a while now. Before I
embark on this trip visiting unknown campsites, I thought I better yet ask
the seasoned campers a question:
How can one go about doing unit testing of a camping application. I''m mainly
thinking about testing of the models. Can the testing facilities of Rails
easily be integrated so that I can test my AR models?

Are we ready for a release ?
Hi campers,
what do you think of releasing the current trunk as camping-1.6 ?
Nothing much has moved since a while and apart from FastCGI, I believe
most bugs where ironed out.
After the gem release, I propose putting some effort on documentation
and how to use Rack''s FastCGI. When that''s done, we''ll have a
Rubyforge announcement and such.

learning.kicks-ass.org
Hey Campers,
Here''s a tiny little app I wrote shortly after SXSW this year.
http://learning.kicks-ass.org/
Click on the big red *RANDOM* button for some mild amusement.
The idea came from Heath Row over a dinner conversation as chronicled here:

! camping-omnibus 1.5.176
gem install camping-omnibus --source code.whytheluckystiff.net
Considering the number of optional dependencies now in Camping, I''ve put
together an eigengem which will load all of the recommended libraries that most
devoted campers will want: ActiveRecord, Mongrel, SQLite3, RedCloth and the
acts_as_versioned gem. (Those last two are used in the examples.)

Camping Technique -- Multiple Layouts
Hey Campers,
Here''s a little technique you can use to support multiple layouts within a
Camping app.
def layout
@layout ||= ''default''
send("#{@layout}_layout") { yield }
end
The minimum you have to do after this is define a *default_layout*, but (as
you can hopefully see) you may define any number of arbitrary layouts to
wrap your content in.
Just set

RESTful mixin, mixin repo?
Hi,
I just put together a little mixin to provide pseudo-RESTful services
in camping apps. Basically, it looks for a hidden _verb field in form
posts, and sets the @method to the supplied value (e.g. put or delete
- which browsers don''t support). This lets you define put and delete
methods in your controllers. Groovy.

FastCGI in Shared Hosting - What To Do?
Hello Campers!
I am working on Site5, trying to get a working Camping application
running. Unfortunately, my sole option in terms of deployment is FastCGI.
I have no access to sudo so I cannot create ScriptAliases.
I''ve taken the Camping Short Short Example and uploaded it, along with a
dispatch.fcgi and an .htaccess file.
My question is - given the state of Camping development right

Session + Redirect trouble
Dear Campers,
I have created a small social network site using Camping, it is located
at http://dekk.hu/ (it is in hungarian).
The authentication part of the application is written so as I saw in
other applications (@state.user_id = @user.id; redirect Index) But some
user has problem with the login process, sometimes the app let them in
only for the second time, sometimes never. Maybe

Dropping Root
Hello Campers
I''m not sure this is the right list to ask but:
I''m using the junebug wiki (which is written in camping) for my own personal wiki. I''d like it to behave as a proper daemon, so it will start up at boot, get stopped properly at shutdown, keep a pid file in /var/run etc.
This requires a little messing with the wiki script junebug makes in the wiki

Camping and sessions proposal.
Hi Campers,
from the discussions gathered around, the current Camping sessions
don''t seem to be satisfying. ActiveRecord doesn''t seem to handle
hashid as an identifier, plus it doesn''t seem to be fully consistent
across the various RDBMS. On the other hand, the scope of the project
does not permit to implement all kind of client persistence. Secure
sessions with

CampingConf?
Campers --
In a few weeks there will be a bunch of people in Portland, OR, for a
conference. A long time ago some campers mentioned that might be a
good time for us to get together and hold a mini CampingConf for a few
hours. Is anyone interested? Does anyone want to organize it?
I''m thinking Wednesday night, May 16.
We could possibly get a spot at FreeGeek (not likely since they are

Session cookies not passed on first redirect
Hello Campers!
Is it just me or does Camping init the session twice on a redirect?
If I have an app and when the user visits it for the first time, a
session is generated. Afterwards I redirect the user in a service
(that basically does auth) and he gets bounced to the login page -
but when I arrive at the login page my SID somehow has changed :-( so
there is a stale session dangling

camping-oauth is now available
I finally put together the final touches on the first version of the
camping-oauth gem.
It allows you to make a Camping web app into an OAuth provider. It
leverages ruby-oauth and the oauth-plugin.
An example of a use case is a web service built with Camping (using
json/xml with/without REST).
You can find it on GitHub: http://bit.ly/campingoauth
I also wrote a blog post on how to use it (and

Newline problem
Hello all,
Recently I have started writing some small package apps. The main app
I''m working on at the moment is Camping/Photos[1]. Here I use
a controller to serve static files (Theme[3]) that I have copied from [2].
There seems a problem however, when using this via lighttpd. All files
that get served (via photos-dispatch.rb) get an extra ''\r\n'' in front.
