How to spec a (Trollop-based) binary’s internal state?
I?m trying to spec a ?binary?, and as previously discussed on this list,
I?m trying to do it ?from outside? ? i.e., by calling it with Kernel#`
and observing the (side-)effects.
Unfortunately, this doesn?t really let me spec expectations about its
internals. Let?s assume I have a -d flag and I parse it with Trollop to
set Conf.debug:
opts = Trollop::options do
opt :debug, ''Print debug

Need advice - which version to use?
Greetings!
I could use some advice on which version of BackgrounDrb to use in my current situation. I''ve implemented the initial, single-process multi-threaded version in a previous site, but have no experience with the new version. Current situation is as follows.
The application involves personal health information and so has very stringent session management requirements. My

backgrounDRb problems with results and MiddleMan
Hi there,
I''ve been experimenting with implementing BackgroundDRb in my rails app but
am running into some problems.
The primary problem I''m getting is in cleaning up worker threads, or getting
any kind of response out of worker threads.
If try using the response function/hash in my Worker the worker will not
execute reporting that response is an unknown variable or function.

my worker and access it inside there with @items). the result is
actually activerecord results in an array. when i change it so my

require ''digest/md5'' not working on Mac or Windows
I''ve tried the following line in ruby script/console
require ''digest/md5''
Both my Mac (Intel iMac) and my Windows box return "false"... Any ideas
what could be wrong? I was trying to do the RoR Recipe on page 54 of
Chad Fowler''s new (beta) book.

Can Win32 service more than one rails request at a time?
Hi,
I am trying to run Mongrel on win32 to serve an internal rails application.
We are accessing legacy data, and some transactions can take 5 to 10 seconds. This is holding up every other request. The -n does not seem to be supported on Win32.
Am I missing something, or should I look elsewhere to serve my Rails app on win32?
Thanks,
Walt

ActiveRecord + memcache = cached_model
Courtesy of The Robot Co-op.
$ yes | sudo gem install cached_model
Or, you can download cached_model and memcache-client (our zippy-fast
memcache library, required) from:
http://rubyforge.org/frs/?group_id=1266
I don''t have the README posted for making cached_model work online
yet, so here it is:

Getting Net::IMAP to work with PLAIN auth type...
Hi there,
I''m new to rails and I''ve been successful tinkering around but
am miffed by the process of trying to connect to my mail server to receive
email for ActiveMailer parsing. I''m hosted on TextDrive and have read the
following article on the RubyonRails wiki:

RoR - Mac OS 10.4.4 on Intel
I got a new 20 inch iMac dual core today and am busy getting it all
setup. A couple of issues though:
1. Is the Ruby 1.8.2 install by Apple still botched or has that been
fixed? I recall someone had fixed the rbconfig.rb to get it working.
Is this something I still have to do?
2. Does anyone know if Locomotive is using the uniersal binaries, or is
it targetting PPC yet? I couldn''t

The New Memcache ?
Hey All !
I ended up browsing to Eric Hodel''s blog the other night, and found his
entry about the new cache_model and memcache-client.
Now, it looks like it''s "officially" out in the open:
http://weblog.rubyonrails.com/articles/2006/01/20/caching-models-with-memcached
In my application, I''ve been staying away from caching my models, and

Stubbing Kernel.` (backquote)
I''m trying to stub(!) the Kernel.` (backquote) method and I''m having
confusing (to me) results. Here''s the method I''m spec''ing:
class Barcode
...
def raw_barcodes
self.make_temporary_copy
`OcrBarcode #{self.temp_file_path}`
end
...
end
And this is my (newbish) attempt at the spec:
describe "Calling @barcode.raw_barcodes" do

Rails Borked After 1.1.3 Install?
I installed 1.1.3 on my OS X Tiger machine and now I''m seeing very strange
results.
When hitting a controller action, I am told that perfectly valid methods are
not there:
NoMethodError (undefined method `find'' for VideoTrack:Module)
Huh? Here''s the code in question:
VideoTrack.find(:all, :conditions => "featured_video = 1", :order =>

helper for models?
Is there such a thing?
I have some duplicate methods in my models, can I place them somewhere
and call them in to my models, thus keeping DRY?

memcache-client/cached_model help
Hi -
Just downloaded and installed the memcache-client and cached_model
gems and am trying to test it out on a development setup. I added
this to my environment/development.rb

mysql mem-tables vs. memcached
Could someone please elaborate on the technical differences and practical
impact of whether choosing memory-based tables in MySQL or using memcached.
I got this far on my own:
It seems that MySQL uses the NDB engine for transaction-safe memory access
in a cluster. the memory storage engine seems to be faster but not
synchronizable by any means in a cluster. memcached seems to be ultimately
fast

Multithreading and DB access in Rails
I just tried writing some controllers, etc. that would allow me to start
and monitor background tasks running in new (Ruby) threads, with the
idea that I''d eventually manage long-running indexing processes that
way. I can kick off such threads OK (by using Thread.new in a routine
called by a controller), but it seems like Rails gets huffy if those
background tasks and the ordinary

[OT] Is it safe to ''su'' to the right user ?
Hi !
I''m using daemontools[1] to manage a few processes on my Debian box.
Among other things, I use it to manage svnserve, because it uses less
memory than Apache.
My /service/svnserve/run looks like this:
#!/bin/sh
su svn -c "/usr/local/bin/svnserve --foreground --daemon --root /var/svn"
Is it safe for me to run like that ? If an attacker cracks svnserve,
what will they

Explanation of "alias_method"
Hi!
I''m trying to extend ActiveRecord''s find method (Rails 1.0, Ruby 1.8.2),
but I recognize a strange behaviour of the "alias_method" call.
I wrote a very simple script to explain my problem:
------------------------------------------------------
module ActiveRecordExtension
def self.included(base)
base.extend(ClassMethods)
base.class_eval do
