How to disconnect to a database????
Hi,
We have experienced some problems with
ActiveRecord::Base class of Ruby-Rails. We are
building a web-application based on the Ruby-rails
framework and the web-application needs to access to
difference databases, so we do not pre-define our
database accesses in the database.yml file. In fact,
we are using the
ActiveRecord::Base.establish_connection() to connect
to our database, the function

rake spec controller test output hideus.
Is there any way to change the output of rake spec fails?
The errors are just totally over the top ugly and not helpful. First
of all the ruby -Ilib line always comes before each test and I find it
distracting. But if an error occurs on something that is not nil it
just gives me the entire contents of that object and that is no small
matter when the object is a HTTP request response.

Show SQL request without issuing it
Hi all,
I saw that some object.save is causing the SQL request to crash, but I
don''t see the SQL request in the logs (only ruby code that''s showing an
error during the .save method).
Is there any way to show the SQL request before it''s issued to the
database ?

index.rb:384 [BUG]
Hi folks,
I''ve working and playing with acts_as_ferret and follow this fantastic
tutorial:
http://www.railsenvy.com/2007/2/19/acts-as-ferret-tutorial
When I try to implement the field storage tip, it crash. So, I try to
make it via script/console:

oddness when adding to index -
I was having some odd results when working with acts_as_ferret (current
trunk), so I decided to test with the current version of ferret to see
if I encountered the same problem. I did. Here are the details:
installed ferret 0.10.10 on debian sarge with ''sudo gem install ferret''
(btw, same results on OSX)
opened up an irb session:

ActiveRecord outside of rails
I have a few questions regarding using activerecord outside of rails.
Usage is with legacy databases, which gives rise to some of the
problems.
Probably the first, and most simple question though, is how to capture
the SQL log, with which I can hopefully figure the other stuff out.
I''m currently trying
ActiveRecord::Base.logger = Logger.new STDOUT
Based on random googles, but it

Segmentation fault on large index
I''m getting a segmentation fault on a large index (15GB). I''m running
ferret 0.11.4 on OpenSuSE 10.2 with ruby 1.8.6. The segmentation
fault appeared after I optimized the index, see further below for the
error message I got before that. Ferret works perfectly on other (smaller)
indexes.
Is this a known issue, and if so, is there a workaround?

Logger datetime_format not working ?
I''m trying to configure logger in a rails app.
I added this to my environment.rb :
RAILS_DEFAULT_LOGGER.datetime_format = "%Y-%m-%d %H.%M.%s"
Yet, none of the entries in the development.log show the datestamp.
What can you tell me about this ?
Thanks.

logger in my classes
Hi,
I wrote a class which is not an AR extension, nor a controller.
I''d like to use logger.* methods there too.
My class is in lib/ dir. I include it in environment.rb with the line
require ''lib/localization''
just after the line
require File.join(File.dirname(__FILE__), ''boot'')
I tried many ways to reuse the logger class. The cleaner way seemed to

questions about garchFit
Hi all,
I was trying garchFIt() of fSeries to fit volatility of monthly log returns
of S&P500. I tried residuals of normal, student t, skew normal, skew t. But
all innovations except normal got exaxtly same coefficients, even if I
changed their parameters of skew and shape.
Is this correct for the data or something wrong? I am attaching the code,
thank you.

problems with garchFit
Hi all,
I post it on both r-help and r-finance since I don't know where is most
appropriate for this topic. Sorry if it bothers you.
I did garch fitting on S&P500 monthly returns with garchFit from fSeries. I
got same coefficients from all cond.dist except normal. I thought that is
probabaly usual for the data. But when I play with it, I got another
question.
I plot skew normal with

Guidance on step() with large dataset (750K) solicited...
Hi.
Background - I am working with a dataset involving around 750K
observations, where many of the variables (8/11) are unordered factors.
The typical model used to model this relationship in the literature has
been a simple linear additive model, but this is rejected out of hand by
the data. I was asked to model this via kernel methods, but first wanted
to play with the parametric

Using a deriv function in nlme
Hello,
I have a deriv function that I am feeding to nlme. It works, and I can use
it in nls, but when I try to use it in nlme I get Error: subscript out of
bounds. I can fit the model using SSasympOrig, instead of the deriv
function, but I am trying to reproduce an earlier analysis (done in Splus)
and I get slightly different results with SSasympOrig.
Here are my calls:

nlme Error: Subscript out of bounds
Hello, I am new to non-linear growth modelling in R and I am trying to
reproduce an analysis that was done (successfully) in S-Plus.
I have a simple non-linear growth model, with no nesting. I have attempted
to simplify the call as much as possible (by creating another grouped
object, instead of using subset= and compacting the fixed and random
expressions.)
This is a what the grouped

Missing functionality in Blowfish for crypt(3)
The blowfish crypt(3) mechanism supports the use of a "cost value" for password encryption. The cost value is encoded into the encrypted password that is stored in master.passwd. On OpenBSD, this cost value can be set in login.conf. FreeBSD does not currently support the cost value. The cost value is the base-2 logarithm of the number of rounds of encryption to use so

attach(cedegren)

Routes
hi all,
I want to move some routing tasks out of the router and into the
controller. The goal is to make Merb feel less like mod_rewrite and
give the user more control at the controller. The new Router is
simple: it takes the path_info (not the whole request) then outputs a
controller class and some parameters from the path matching. The rest
of the routing would be done at the controller level.

Adding a "boot from local hard disk" option to syslinux menu, booted from USB
Hi all,
I use XP on my laptop PC, with 30 GB HD (single
partition), and a 3.5" hard drive (not a stick),
accessed through a USB encasing, partitioned as five
logical drives.
I have successfully set up syslinux to boot several
Ubuntu versions from the primary USB hard drive
partition, and no problems there. The problem is, I
would like to have an entry in the menu, like "Boot
