Observers?
Hello all!
I''m having an issue with Observers, and I''m hoping someone knows the
answer.
Here is the definition:

> class VehicleObserver < ActiveRecord::Observer
> def after_save(vehicle)
> breakpoint
> if vehicle.has_new_mil_indication?
> UserMailer.deliver_mil_notice(vehicle)

Why doesn''t my "action" take action?
I have the following code in my index.rhtml:
<div id="how_many_images" style="background-color:#eee;">
<%= render(:partial => ''form'') %></div>
...and the following in my _form.rhtml
<%= form_remote_tag(:update => "images_div_main",

These objects aren''t equal..I''m confused
I''m testing to see if two objects are equal. One is accessed directly
from the fixture, and the other is accessed through a relationship.
Here''s the test:
def test_hero
assert_equal players(:hero), hands(:first).hero
end
Anyway, the values are exactly the same as far as I can tell. The
only difference is the object id, but Ruby compares the values, right?

Agile Web Development with Rails 1.1
Dave, on another topic, might I recommend that you and DHH publish an
updated version of the Agile guide right away when 1.1 comes out? You could
reuse much of your material and it would do a lot of good to help make sure
there is still a good centralized source of reference for Rails. Without
that book, there really is not a good one-stop source of information for
people to learn how to use

counter_cache reference/tutorial
I''m trying to use counter_cache, but I''m not doing something right.
It is unreliable and I keep having to correct it manually. Is there a
good tutorial or reference on how to use it on-line? I have the AWDR
book, but I need something more complete.
TIA,
Jeffrey

one more try - ENV and FastCGI
Hi,
I''m desperate, so I thought I''d try one more time in the hopes of getting a
different audience. Basically. it boils down to this. Using CGI, the ENV
hash is populated and is accessible from a model script. Using FastCGI, the
ENV hash is empty. Can anyone explain how I can fix this?
Thanks,
Stan Mcfarland

[AWDR] Tutorial in A4 wont ''destroy'' items
Hello,
I''m working through the tutorial, and I''ve run into a little snag. In
the first part of the tutorial, the destroy link is not working
correctly. I can''t figure out where I goofed. Removing :confirm doesn''t
seem to resolve the issue.
Thanks,
Randy.

Understanding Common Views
Hi Everyone,
I''m trying to formulate my thoughts on how views work in RoR and I
understand the basic bits -
1. Every controller has its own view defined using rhtml files in the
views/[controller_name] folder.
2. There is one "view" file (rhtml) for every in the controller and has
the same name as the method.
3. For portions that are common, partials can be used - file

Reading floating points into a field stored as Integers
Hi, I''m trying to follow the "AWDR" example of storing certain types of
numbers (in my case, percentages not money) as integers in the
database. I understand from the Depot application how to format the
output to have 2 places (or n places for that matter) decimal.
Now, I"m wondering about the input. It''s more natural for people to
enter numbers as

using web service for authenitcation
I am writting a web service for authenitcation of users and was using
web_service_scaffold :invoke for testing it out...and was able to consume it
using .NET. But my question is, whats the simplest method using which i can
use the same web service in the current Web App. I mean, not from an external
application or something but from the current web apps itself.
I found one method in AWDR, and

Controller testing and mocks...
So far I''ve been doing my controller testing against "real" (testing)
objects; however, I''ve been beginning to wonder if I should "default" to
using mocks in most cases -- both for performence and to enforce a
looser coupling.
In part this is driven by my viewpoint that rail''s "functional" tests
are still "unit" tests, so they

Don''t un-admin the last administrator
I have a User class with a field called admin which is a boolean that
determines if the user is or is not an administrator. I want to make it
impossible for the last administrator for an account to be removed from
the system.
I need to protect against this both when deleting a user and when
editing a user as you can revoke a user''s administrator privileges via a
form.

params vs @params
Is there a difference in the way that params[] and @params[] are handled?
Is the ''handling'' done by Ruby or Rails?
A pointer to the relevant documentation would be sincerely appreciated. Or just an answer would be ok too ;-)
Thanks,
Bill

Rails and Offline processing
How are you guys handling threads or server processes that have to,
for example, process the data in your application on a periodic basis?
Cron jobs can do it and then run on the database. But, are there ways
to launch threads within the rails application itself.
I have heard of WebBrick ways, but I am working with lighttpd,
fastcgi? (textdrive if you are really interested).

Integrating multiple applications
I''ve got a couple apps that I use (billing app, support ticket app,
some other custom apps) that I want to integrate into one site. They
will all use the same layout for the most part, and will link between
each other.
When I initially thought of doing this, I figured if I put the apps at
different roots - /billing /support etc - then the links wouldn''t work
at all, because

mysql dates
does anyone know of a way to make the date_helper deal with mysql dates with 00 values in them?
I have lots of dates that are like the following:
2005-04-00
2005-00-00
and I need to set null values in a date_select for elements that are 00. These are valid dates in mysql.
In the absence of an immediate solution to the above, I''ve been trying to find out how InstanceTag.new works so I can
