Arel quiz: complex queries with associations
I have a real-world application with some complex queries that I want to
convert to Arel (as part of an upgrade to Rails 3.1). So that I can
understand what I''m doing before I flail around in my real app, I wrote
a little sample app (just the models) with some similar associations --
one table joined with itself and more tables that join to another table,
so there are some queries that

HABTM with finder_sql problem (Rails bug?)
I''m building an app that needs i18n support across the entire database
(i.e. localized attributes). In order to do this I''ve created a
special HABTM join table that can be associated with _any_ other
table:
create table language_strings (
	for_table	varchar(255)	not null,
	foreign_id	int not null,
	language_id	varchar(5)	not null,
	attr_name	varchar(255)	not null,
	value text

Multilingual Rails v0.5. Big update!
Multilingual Rails v0.5 is just released with lots of new features.
Here is the changelog:
v0.5: New charset conversion string-methods. Multilingual Rails
always use UTF-8 internally.
iconv_to(charset) # Return string as charset
         iconv_from(charset) # Return string as UTF-8, converted
from charset
iconv_from!(charset) # Convert string from charset to UTF-8

is it possible to duplicate a key? --new
Im not very familiar with RoR so this question might be kind of silly.
I want to store strings from different lenguages in a database. I want
to have the key for the string in english be the ''key'' for all the
corresponding traslations of that string. For example:
(database columns)
lenguage-------------key-----------------value-----
english hello

InPlaceSelectEditor question
I''m attempting to use the example given in the Rails Recipes book chapter 2,
to create a select drop-down using the InPlaceEditor function (modified to
be InPlaceSelectEditor.
The example given works (a country list drop-down), but I''m attempting to
use it to display a list of items generated from an object in another table
that is linked to the table that I''m editing.

A Ferret/AAF success story
Hello everyone-
We recently added full archives search to Lingr (http://www.lingr.com),
and we used Ferret/AAF to do it.
I''ve written a blog post with some details of that integration, and I
thought some of you might be interested. See
http://blog.lingr.com/2007/05/we_heart_ferret.html.
I''m grateful to the authors of Ferret and AAF, as well as to all the
people in this forum

How use Spanish / English prompts on same box
Hi-
Can someone help me conceptualize how I could setup an * box which features both English and Spanish prompts? I know it's possible to configure the box to use one or the other, but how could I setup a multi-lingual box? Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance,
Mike

[Howto] custom and translated AR validation error messages
Hi,
I''m putting the finishing touches on a multi-lingual application, and
just posted a blog entry on how I did translate validation errors
generated by ActiveRecord at: http://www.myowndb.com/blog/?p=4
I found it surprisingly easy, and thought I''d document it.
The translation is based on a plugin I plan to publish really really
soon, more info whith the upcoming announcement.

Rails Naming Conventions
DB field names:
If I have a table that references 2 or more separate users from my users
table, is there a recommended naming convention for this situation? In
my case, I have 3 users associated with a record in my projects table:
  requester_user_id
  created_by
  updated_by
I could name one of them "user_id", and then projects.user would work I
guess, but wouldn''t work

String Resources & Popup Problem
Ok, that's done.
Now after this the should compile and run :
in En.rc MAIN_MENU is defined now like this :
MAIN_MENU MENU
{
 POPUP "&File" {
  MENUITEM "&New...", 0x100
En.rc is included by #include "En.rc" in rsrc.rc.
And gcc complies about it when compiling :
[syl@snoop notepad]$ make
gcc -c -I. -I. -I../../include -I../../include -g -O2
-Wall

Just another localization thread
Hey all,
I was playing w/ Thomas Fuch''s Localization module (thanks Thomas!), and
just realized how hard is to localize an application in Rails :-)
The Localization module works nice, but the problem is the error
messages. Its not that good to keep the application in [your idiom] and
the error messages in english. I saw the other threads about it,
specially the ones that recommends

in_place_editor not working for Internationalization
I''m trying to implement internationalization in my app. I followed
the instructions on the Globalize example (http://wiki.globalize-
rails.org/globalize/show/Example+Application), using in_place_editor.
The translation works fine, however, I can''t get in_place_editor to
work to translate the strings.
My controller:

Myowndb: a web database built with rails
Hi all,
I wanted to announce on this list that I have launched http://myowndb.com which
is a web database built with Ruby on Rails.
The application lets the administrator users define the data structure through
a web interface like in a normal database, with:
- tables
- enhanced datatypes like emaili, web URL, and a choice in list
- relations (one to many, one to one) between tables

Custom helpers for list of options?
Hi all,
I have a model that "belongs_to" many other models, many of those
models are just list of names, like country, state, city, profession
... I read about the country_select helper.
Is better to have all those tables or use custom helpers? what the rails way?
Thanks.
For example : http://pastie.caboo.se/104092
# = Schema
# country_id integer
# city_id integer

Speex: Open-source, patent-free speech coding
Hi,
We would like to announce the first release of the Speex project. Speex
(http://speex.sourceforge.net) is an open-source (LGPL), patent-free
compression format allowing an alternative to expensive proprietary
codecs. Unlike Ogg Vorbis which compresses general audio, Speex is
designed especially for speech. For that reason, Speex is meant to be a
complement to Vorbis. Since it is specialized

change languages from an IVR
A customer of mine wants an IVR where the first 3 choices are
1 English
2 Spanish
3 French
I can build the IVR but how do I get the system prompts to then speak
the selected langauge. For example, a caller has selected Spanish and so
is routed to the Spanish part of the IVR. At some point he breaks out of
the IVR to leave a VM. How does the system know to continue offering him
Spanish?

Rails - Mock going out of scope?
Hello list,
I think I have a rails related RSpec problem with a mock going out of
scope on a recursive call to a model.
The code is at: http://pastie.textmate.org/79821 if you want to see it
highlighted. I have pasted it below as well.
Basically, I have an acts_as_nested_set model called "Node", which
works fine. I have a function which finds the language name of the
node instance.
