Zfs best practice for 2U SATA iSCSI NAS
Is there a best practice guide for using zfs as a basic rackable small
storage solution?
I''m considering zfs with a 2U 12 disk Xeon based server system vs
something like a second hand FAS250.
Target enviroment is mixature of Xen or VI hosts via iSCSI and nfs/cifs.
Being able to take snapshots of running (or maybe paused) xen iscsi
vols and re-export then for cloning and remote backup

Are recursive snapshot destroy and rename atomic too?
In another thread recursive snapshot creation was found atomic so that
it is done quickly, and more important, all at once or nothing at all.
Do you know if recursive destroying and renaming of snapshots are atomic too?

Hotplug issues on USB removable media.
Hi,
As a part of the next stages of the time-slider project we are looking into doing actual backups onto
removable media devices such as USB media. The goal is to be able to view snapshots stored on the
media and merge these into the list of viewable snapshots in nautilus giving the user a broader
selection of restore points. In an ideal world we would like to detect the insertion of the

Can I trust ZFS?
Hey folks,
I guess this is an odd question to be asking here, but I could do with some feedback from anybody who''s actually using ZFS in anger.
I''m about to go live with ZFS in our company on a new fileserver, but I have some real concerns about whether I can really trust ZFS to keep my data alive if things go wrong. This is a big step for us, we''re a 100% windows

Kernel panic on zfs import
Hi,
I''ve got an OpenSolaris 2009.06 box that will reliably panic whenever
I try to import one of my pools. What''s the best practice for
recovering (before I resort to nuking the pool and restoring from
backup)?
There are two pools on the system: rpool and tank. The rpool seems to
be fine, since I can boot from a 2009.06 CD and ''zpool import -f
rpool''; I can

reconstruct recovery of rpool zpool and zfs file system with bad sectors
Folks I posted this question on (OpenSolaris - Help) without any replies http://opensolaris.org/jive/thread.jspa?threadID=129436&tstart=0 and am re-posting here in the hope someone can help ... I have updated the wording a little too (in an attempt to clarify)
I currently use OpenSolaris on a Toshiba M10 laptop.
One morning the system wouldn''t boot OpenSolaris 2009.06 (it was simply

ZFS High Availability
I''m looking for input on building an HA configuration for ZFS. I''ve read the FAQ and understand that the standard approach is to have a standby system with access to a shared pool that is imported during a failover.
The problem is that we use ZFS for a specialized purpose that results in 10''s of thousands of filesystems (mostly snapshots and clones). All versions of

enterprise scale redundant Solaris 10/ZFS server providing NFSv4/CIFS
We are looking for a replacement enterprise file system to handle storage
needs for our campus. For the past 10 years, we have been happily using DFS
(the distributed file system component of DCE), but unfortunately IBM
killed off that product and we have been running without support for over a
year now. We have looked at a variety of possible options, none of which
have proven fruitful. We are

Cannot destroy snapshots: dataset does not exist
Hello,
I have a ZFS filesystem (zpool version 26 on Nexenta CP 3.01) which I''d like to rollback but it''s having an existential crisis.
Here''s what I see:
root at bambi:/# zfs rollback bambi/faline/userdocs at AutoD-2010-09-28
cannot rollback to ''bambi/faline/userdocs at AutoD-2010-09-28'': more recent snapshots exist

ZFS, power failures, and UPSes
Hello,
I''ve looked around Google and the zfs-discuss archives but have not been
able to find a good answer to this question (and the related questions
that follow it):
How well does ZFS handle unexpected power failures? (e.g. environmental
power failures, power supply dying, etc.)
Does it consistently gracefully recover?
Should having a UPS be considered a (strong) recommendation or

order bug, legacy mount and nfs sharing
Hi,
I''ve encountered this bug: http://www.opensolaris.org/jive/thread.jspa?threadID=108316&tstart=30
and to obviate to the problem I''m using legacy mounts.
Now the system boot without problems, but nfs server doesn''t start because couldn''t find any share.
So I''ve disabled nfs with zfs set sharenfs=off on my zfs filesystems and tried to use the share

ZFS pool fragmentation
I have a huge problem with ZFS pool fragmentation.
I started investigating problem about 2 weeks ago http://www.opensolaris.org/jive/thread.jspa?threadID=34423&tstart=0
I found workaround for now - changing recordsize - but I want better solution.
The best solution would be a defragmentator tool, but I can see that it is not easy.
When ZFS pool is fragmented then:

ZFS snapshot splitting & joining
Hello everyone,
I am trying to take ZFS snapshots (ie. zfs send) and burn them to DVD''s for offsite storage. In many cases, the snapshots greatly exceed the 8GB I can stuff onto a single DVD-DL.
In order to make this work, I have used the "split" utility to break the images into smaller, fixed-size chunks that will fit onto a DVD. For example:
#split -b8100m

Kernel panic on ZFS import - how do I recover?
I posted this on the www.nexentastor.org forums, but no answer so far, so I apologize if you are seeing this twice. I am also engaged with nexenta support, but was hoping to get some additional insights here.
I am running nexenta 3.0.3 community edition, based on 134. The box crashed yesterday, and goes into a reboot loop (kernel panic) when trying to import my data pool, screenshot attached.

Balancing LVOL fill?
Hi all
I have this server with some 50TB disk space. It originally had 30TB on WD Greens, was filled quite full, and another storage chassis was added. Now, space problem gone, fine, but what about speed? Three of the VDEVs are quite full, as indicated below. VDEV #3 (the one with the spare active) just spent some 72 hours resilvering a 2TB drive. Now, those green drives suck quite hard, but not

[zfs] portable zfs send streams (preview webrev)
We have finished a beta version of the feature. A webrev for it
can be found here:
http://cr.illumos.org/~webrev/sensille/fits-send/
It adds a command ''zfs fits-send''. The resulting streams can
currently only be received on btrfs, but more receivers will
follow.
It would be great if anyone interested could give it some testing
and/or review. If there are no objections,

(preview) Whitepaper - ZFS Pools Explained - feedback welcome
Hello list,
while following this list for more then 1 year, I feel that this list was a great way to get insights into ZFS. Thank you all for contributing.
Over the last month''s I was writing a little "whitepaper" trying to consolidate the knowledge collected here. It has now reached a "beta" state and I would like to share the result with you. I call it

Gnome is still showing the icon it shows when stuff hasn''t finished
loading....is there any way i can find out why it''s locking up and how to
fix it?

zfs-discuss mailing list & opensolaris EOL
So, I hear, in a couple weeks'' time, opensolaris.org is shutting down. What does that mean for this mailing list? Should we all be moving over to something at illumos or something?
I''m going to encourage somebody in an official capacity at opensolaris to respond...
I''m going to discourage unofficial responses, like, illumos enthusiasts etc simply trying to get people
