biggest disk partition on 5.8?
Hey folks, I have a Sun J4400 SAS1 disk array with 24 x 1T drives in it connected to a Sunfire x2250 running 5.8 ( 64 bit ) I used 'arcconf' to create a big RAID60 out of (see below). But then I mount it and it is way too small This should be about 20TB : [root at solexa1 StorMan]# df -h /dev/sdb1 Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sdb1 186G 60M

Backing up OS drive?
I have one drive that I''m running OpenSolaris on and a 6-drive RAIDZ. Unfortunately I don''t have another drive to mirror the OS drive, so I was wondering what the best way to back up that drive is. Can I mirror it onto a file on the RAIDZ, or will this cause problems before the array is loaded when booting? What about zfs send and recv to the RAIDZ? -- This message posted from

ZFS on top of ZFS iSCSI share
I have a filer running Opensolaris (snv_111b) and I am presenting a iSCSI share from a RAIDZ pool. I want to run ZFS on the share at the client. Is it necessary to create a mirror or use ditto blocks at the client to ensure ZFS can recover if it detects a failure at the client? Thanks, Bruin

ZFS iSCSI (For VirtualBox target) and SMB
Hey all, I''m setting up a ZFS based fileserver to use both as a shared network drive and separately to have an iSCSI target to be used as the "Hard disk" of a windows based VM runninf on another machine. I''ve built the machine, installed the OS, created the RAIDZ pool and now have a couple of questions (I''m pretty much new to Solaris by the way but have been

A few Newbie questions about RAIDZ
1. I have a 4x18GB drive setup as RAIDZ. Now when thinking about it in terms of RAID5 I would expect to get (4-1)x18 worth of drive space, but DF -h shows 4x18. Is this a bug or do I not understand? 2. Once again thinking in RAID5 terms if I have 4X18GB and 12X9GB drives and I want to make a RAIDZ of all of them I would expect the 18GB to be treated at 9GB so the RAIDZ would be 16X9GB. Is

RAIDZ v. RAIDZ1
So, I took four 1.5TB drives and made RAIDZ, RAIDZ1 and RAIDZ2 pools. The sizes for the pools were 5.3TB, 4.0TB, and 2.67TB respectively. The man page for RAIDZ states that "The raidz vdev type is an alias for raidz1." So why was there a difference between the sizes for RAIDZ and RAIDZ1? Shouldn''t the size be the same for "zpool create raidz ..." and "zpool

Convert raidz
Hi Is it possible to convert live 3 disks zpool from raidz to raidz2 And is it possible to add 1 new disk to raidz configuration without backups and recreating zpool from cratch. Thanks This message posted from opensolaris.org

Z-Raid performance with Random reads/writes
Given a 1.6TB ZFS Z-Raid consisting 6 disks: And a system that does an extreme amount of small /(<20K) /random reads /(more than twice as many reads as writes) / 1) What performance gains, if any does Z-Raid offer over other RAID or Large filesystem configurations? 2) What is any hindrance is Z-Raid to this configuration, given the complete randomness and size of these accesses? Hardware RAID vs. ZFS RAID
Hello, I have a Dell 2950 with a Perc 5/i, two 300GB 15K SAS drives in a RAID0 array. I am considering going to ZFS and I would like to get some feedback about which situation would yield the highest performance: using the Perc 5/i to provide a hardware RAID0 that is presented as a single volume to OpenSolaris, or using the drives separately and creating the RAID0 with OpenSolaris and ZFS? Or

Extending RAIDZ.
Yeah:) I''d like to work on this. Here are my first observations: - We need to call vdev_op_asize method with additonal ''offset'' argument, - We need to move data to new disk starting from the very begining, so we can''t reuse scrub/resilver code which does tree-walk through the data. Below you can see how I imagine to extend RAIDZ. Here is the legend:

zfs raidz1 and traditional raid 5 perfomrance comparision
Hi, for zfs raidz1, I know for random io, iops of a raidz1 vdev eqaul to one physical disk iops, since raidz1 is like raid5 , so is raid5 has same performance like raidz1? ie. random iops equal to one physical disk''s ipos. Regards Victor -- This message posted from opensolaris.org

convert raidz from osx
I am converting a 4 disk raidz from osx to opensolaris. And I want to keep the data intact. I want zfs to get access to the full disk instead of a slice. I believe like c8d0 instead off c8d0s1. I wanted to do this 1 disk at a time and let it resilver. what is the proper way to do this. I tried, I believe from memory : zpool replace -f rpool c8d1s1 c8d1 but it didn''t let me do that. then I

Best way to carve up 8 disks
Ok, previous threads have lead me to believe that I want to make raidz vdevs [0] either 3, 5 or 9 disks in size [1]. Let''s say I have 8 disks. Do I want to create a zfs pool with a 5-disk vdev and a 3-disk vdev? Are there performance issues with mixing differently sized raidz vdevs in a pool? If there *is* a performance hit to mix like that, would it be greater or lesser than building

RAID-Z/mirror hybrid allocator

6 disk raidz2 or 3 stripe 2 way mirror
I''m playing around with ZFS and want to figure out the best use of my 6x 300GB SATA drives. The purpose of the drives is to store all of my data at home (video, photos, music, etc). I''m debating between: 6x 300GB disks in a single raidz2 pool --or-- 2x (3x 300GB disks in a pool) mirrored I''ve read up a lot on ZFS, but I can''t really figure out which is

zfs? page faults
Hi, I have setup an old Compaq Proliant DL580 with 2 xeon @700MHz 2Gb RAM two SmartArray 5300 controllers and 12 drives in an array enclosure. I am running the latest opensolaris update bfu''ed from binaries since I could not build from source. I am controlling the drives with the cpqary3 driver (Solaris 10) from HP. Initially the array had 7 drives and I created a raidz zfs pool

jbod questions
Folks, We are in the process of purchasing new san/s that our mail server runs on (JES3). We have moved our mailstores to zfs and continue to have checksum errors -- they are corrected but this improves on the ufs inode errors that require system shutdown and fsck. So, I am recommending that we buy small jbods, do raidz2 and let zfs handle the raiding of these boxes. As we need more

Is the J4200 SAS array suitable for Sun Cluster?
I''m setting up a two-node cluster with 1U x86 servers. It needs a small amount of shared storage, with two or four disks. I understand that the J4200 with SAS disks is approved for this use, although I haven''t seen this information in writing. Does anyone have experience with this sort of configuration? I have a few questions. I understand that the J4200 with SATA disks will
