How to determine if an object has just been created
Is there a built-in way to determine if a model object has just been created (ie. this object was the one that was originally persisted)? I can''t see it anywhere in the AR code, but thought I''d check. I want something like: p = Person.create p.original_instance? # true Is this built-in or should I just patch AR? -Jonathan.

[PLUGIN] ArPaginator - Allows you to easily paginate over any existing AR queries.
The built-in Rails pagination is fairly limited...you pass in the model name, and optionally some conditions, and it generates a paginated query for you. This gets to be very bad if you''ve got any custom queries. class Company < ActiveRecord::Base def complete_videos Video.find :all, :conditions => "company_id=#{id} AND status=''complete''", :order

Problem with RSS feed from Rails Recipes
I''m trying to add an RSS feed to my app, and am going through the Rails Recipes chapter on doing so. Storing BigDecimal in the db
I need to do some precise math, going to 12-14 decimal places, so I''m using BigDecimal. How can I store this in a db? I''m using postgresql 8.1.0, if that matters at all. I found a plugin [1] but it gives me the error "You have a nil object when you didn''t expect it! The error occurred while evaluating nil.each_pair," with no line number. The plugin itself

[PLUGIN] count_from_query - easily convert finder queries into count queries
count_from_query gives you the ability to generate a COUNT query from a standard Rails find. For example, if you have the query User.find :all it would be trivial to get a count: User.count however, if you have a more specific finder method, such as class Company < ActiveRecord::Base def complete_videos Video.find :all, :conditions => "company_id=#{id} AND

"Tricks" for testing after_create callback???
I''ve got a model Message, which needs to send an email using action mailer after it''s first saved in the database. I want to pass the model to the mailer which then uses methods on the message model to render the email. So the natural way to do this is in an after_create callback on the Message model. But I can''t see an easy way to test this. Here''s my spec

first cut at blockless given/when/then
Hi all, I committed a first cut at blockless Givens/Whens/Thens to RSpec''s trunk: cd /path/to/rspec/project svn up cd rspec bin/spec examples/story/calculator.rb Take a look at examples/story/calculator.rb to see what''s going on. Needs docs!!!! Thoughts welcome. I''ve also got a cut at the plain text parser checked in, but it''s not hooked up to anything

Edge RSpec on Rails...what did I forget?
Started a new Rails project, and installed RSpec and the Rails plugin vendor/plugins/rspec (svn://rubyforge.org/var/svn/rspec/trunk/rspec) - 1332 vendor/plugins/rspec_on_rails (svn://rubyforge.org/var/svn/rspec/trunk/rspec_on_rails/vendor/plugins/rspec_on_rails) - 1332 Generated the rspec file, created a model...the spec runs fine if I do ruby spec/models/foo_spec.rb. Running rake though gives

How do I use link_to with all the current options?
In one of my pages I want to create some URLs that go to the same page, but tack on an extra parameter (column sorting stuff). How do I do that? I''ve tried link_to "Title", :sort => "title" and that''s pretty close...it keeps the controller name, but it doesn''t include one of the parameters. I''m using nested routes, so the URL should

Rails, REST and JSON
Hi everyone, I''m writing a lightweight AJAX application using Rails on the server side as a RESTful web service provider. I need the web service to support both JSON and XML I/O. Outputting data in XML and JSON is easy (using to_xml and to_json), and it''s also easy to do XML input as Rails does it for you automatically. Is it possible to somehow have the same automatic parsing

[PLUGIN] rspec_resource_generator - RESTful scaffold generator with RSpec specifications
rspec_resource_generator ======================== By Pat Maddox Use this generator to generate RESTful scaffolding with RSpec specifications. Syntax is exactly the same as the scaffold_resource generator: ./script/generate rspec_resource ModelName [field:type field:type] When you run this generator, it will create a migration, model, and model spec file. In addition, it gives you a RESTful

it "should [action] ..." vs it with an active voice
I''d like to start gathering information/debating on the advantages/disadvantages of using it "should ..." vs other techniques. Dan North explained why we should use should: http://dannorth.net/introducing-bdd/ I used to use it "should ..." for the projects I was on, until I was challenged by a fellow developer who started using it with an active voice. For example

Webrick is being stupid...no info on a brand new project
I created a project, made a migration, generated scaffolding...start up webrick and I get nothing. To simplify things, I just started another project and generated a controller, still getting nothing. The index page loads fine, but nothing beyond that. If I go to anything that should give me a 404, the page is just blank. The Webrick console just says a 500 (nothing explaining why), and

Community request - can someone show me REST?
I mentioned this in another thread, but I''ve got a formal request now. After reading tons of stuff about REST, I don''t really get it. I need to see an example. I''d like someone to write up an example blog app with these requirements - RESTful using the simply_restful plugin (or edge rails) - allows posting of comments to articles - has categories for posts No need

I want to stick my models in a module
I''ve got enough models now that I''d like to separate them into modules. For example, I have the class Player that I want to stick in the Trainer module. I''ve changed the definition to class Trainer::Player I''ve created a models/trainer dir, test/unit/trainer, and test/fixtures/trainer. Change the PlayerTest class to be Trainer::PlayerTest. Just upgraded to 1.0.0, should render_text isn''t working for me
I finally got around to upgrading from 0.8.2 (!!). I had a spec which looked like specify "should render abc123" do controller.should_render :text => "abc123" get :key end With 1.0.0, the new spec is it "should render abc123" do get :key response.should render_text("abc123") end However it doesn''t work, giving me the error: undefined

Rake tasks getting in the way of edge (uses gem instead)
So I''d been running gem releases of rspec for the past several months, and I installed edge rspec so that I can use Story Runner. I''m running into a problem because I''ve got a couple rake tasks that reference "spec/rake/raketask". If I try to run "rake spec" then it pulls in the gem version instead of the plugin version. rake blows up saying that
