Scheduled maintenance?
I''m running xen on SLES10SP2. It''s been much more stable than SP1, but I still occasionally have issues. For example, one of my servers (8 CPU/32GB RAM) has five sles pv domUs and five fully virtualized windows 2k3 domUs. It had been up for almost 60 days. Yesterday afternoon one of the sles domU''s stopped responding. I went to check on it and I couldn''t using

Non-XCP/XenServer frontend or management console
Hi all. Obviously there''s been a lot of talk lately about frontends or management consoles for xen. All, or most, seem to be for XCP or XenServer. Is there anything for a group of standalone servers sharing storage? In my case it''s SLES11 with xen 3.4.1. I would love to have a frontend for seeing status, starting, and stopping domains. Provisioning new domains would be an

snapshots on xen
Hi all. I''m using sles11 for my xen servers. I would really like to be able to do hot snapshots of disk AND memory, and then have these snapshots backed up to tape or off site for disaster recovery. I''m thinking this would be done weekly or monthly, not nightly. Two questions: 1) Is this even possible? 2) I could probably have the systems shutdown to make a clean backups, but

GPLPV or other drivers for win2k8r2?
Hi. I have some new 64bit Windows 2008 R2 domU''s running on SLES11/xen_3.4.2. What is everyone using to get 1gb network performance on win2k8? I''ve used GPLPV on win2k3, but I see you have to sign the drivers yourself for 64bit. Maybe that process isn''t difficult, I only glance at the link from gplpv''s page. What is everyone using? GPLPV is about the only

SLES10SP2 (xen 3.2.x) vs SLES11 (xen 3.4.x)
I built a couple new servers on SLES11 because I needed to use USB. Since SLES11 has xen 3.4 packages that seemed like the way to go. I''m questioning the stability of the two new servers compared to my SLES10SP2 servers. I''m also questioning the performance of Windows domUs. On Thanksgiving day one of my SLES11 servers running 7-8 domUs crashed and restarted three times. Being

RHEL6 beta vs. Xen
Has anyone yet figured out what it would take to make Xen run on top of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 beta? We are heavily invested in Xen under RHEL5 (actually a redhat clone) distribution, but already the xen kernel they are shipping with update 4 and 5 is shaky and has bugs which they don''t seem to be in a hurry to fix. Basically I am wondering if Redhat 6 is just going to have

pci device not owned by pciback.
So yesterday I got was able to get a domU successfully using a PCI SCSI card. This morning I restarted the host server. When I try to start up the same domU I get this error: Error: pci: improper device assignment specified: pci: 0000:0e:04.0 must be co-assigned to the same guest with 0000:0e:04.0, but it is not owned by pciback. How do I make this card owned by pciback on reboot. Do I need to

Can''t install Windows 2003 on SLES10SP1
I finally have a xen server to play with stuff that''s causing me problems on my production servers. One of those problems is simply installing Windows 2003. Here''s what I do: Open virt-manager set up a new install: full virt 512 ram 20 gig sparse file boot off /dev/cdrom The install starts as you''d expect. When it gets to the formatting I tell it to format in NTFS.

should restarting xend restart all the domU''s?
I had an issue late yesterday where some windows domU''s were down. The person who "owns" those domUs let windows updates install and then restart, which they failed to restart. When I tried to manually restart them I was getting can''t allocate memory errors. In the past I''ve had can''t allocate memory errors when trying to bring up a new domU.

Linux distributions supported by Xen as PVM domUs
Hi: Reading Red Hat''s Website and a printed manual of RH184 (Red Hat Virtualization course) I see that RHEL 5 only supports RHEL 4.5 and RHEL 5 as paravirtualized guests. So I asume this is the same situation for CentOS 5, right? What''s the dependency between Xen versions for paravirtualized guests? I ask this questions because I got this experiences: 1. Running CentOS 5 as

Ballooning on SLES11SP1
We have some test servers running SLES11SP1 and we''ve updated to the latest kernel from Novell: 2.6.32.13-0.5-xen Since running the updates on these servers our xen ballooning parameters are not working. Because of memory problems in the past we set dom0 to 2048 meg of ram in grub and set the following parameters in /etc/xen/xend-config.sxp: (dom0-min-mem 2048) (enable-dom0-ballooning

Xen and I/O Intensive Loads
Hi, folks, I''m attempting to run an e-mail server on Xen. The e-mail system is Novell GroupWise, and it serves about 250 users. The disk volume for the e-mail is on my SAN, and I''ve attached the FC LUN to my Xen host, then used the "phy:/dev..." method to forward the disk through to the domU. I''m running into an issue with high I/O wait on the box (~250%)

GPL PV Intermitent Network Problems
Well, I seem to have developed a strange issue with the GPL PV drivers in Windows. I''m running Xen 3.2 on SLES 10 SP2 and running some Windows XP HVM domUs. Most (12-15) of my Windows machines work just fine. Two of them, though, have started exhibiting a strange behavior with intermittent network connectivity. Basically, the network starts up and connects initially. After some

preferred XEN dom0 OS
Hi, What is the preferred OS to use with XEN, as the dom0 host? We primarely us CentOS (currently 5.6) but it seems that the native XEN that comes with CentOS is a bit behind. What is the preferred OS to run on the dom0''s? -- Kind Regards Rudi Ahlers SoftDux Website: http://www.SoftDux.com Technical Blog: http://Blog.SoftDux.com Office: 087 805 9573 Cell: 082 554 7532

tap:aio not working...
I''m running SLES10 SP1 and have been using file:/ for my file-backed domUs. The domUs sit on a shared OCFS2 SAN-backed filesystem and are run on my three or four XEN servers. I''m having issues with the loopback devices not being released when the domUs shutdown or migrate, so I decided to switch over to tap:aio for my file-backed domUs. This isn''t working, either.

Host does not support virtualization type 'xen'
Hello Community, I successfully installed and run xen (xm list and xm info can output appropriately). However, while I was installing domU image by using virt-install -p at domU OS. I encountered an error information" Host does not support virtualization type ''xen'' ". I built xen from source. Some of my friends have the same issue, but if they use pre-build xen, the

changing behavior of xendomains stop
I''m running xen 3.1.2 as bastardized by RedHat on a redhat clone operating system. I''m using the xendomains script as it came out of the box to start my domU''s at boot and stop them at shutdown. There are three problems right now: 1) left to its own devices, service xendomains stop attempts to do "xm save" on each of the domU''s. that takes quite a

Problem with some win3k3 domUs since crash
Yesterday all of my xen servers went down hard and also lost connection to ocfs2. 95% of the domU''s came back up ok, but I do have problems with a few windows domUs. They seem to start ok, but them immediately lose connection to the network. If I have them on DHCP they are on long enough to get an address, then they lose connection. If I look at the properties of the NIC it says 1GB

Re: unable to access Linux HVM via xm console - Couldnot read tty from store: No such file or directory
HVM = fully virtualized. The question is, why are you using fully virtualized domUs? Why not paravirtualized (PV)? >>> On 2008/06/16 at 16:07, Rudi Ahlers <Rudi@SoftDux.com> wrote: Itamar - IspBrasil wrote: > why you''re using hvm ? its slow > > > > Rudi Ahlers wrote: >> Hi all >> >> I''m running CentOS 5.1 x64 + Xen 3.0 & I
