Fwd: Re: Swap: create or not?
I think I wrote not very clearly. I say ''swap in domU will save in case lag or little mistake with balloon''. If course, there is no any kind of ballooning for dom0. Right now we running pretty much VMs for our cloud services and we use heavy memory management (it grabs and gives memory with lag less then second depends on usage in customers VM). And we have some statistics

Getting codebook data into R
I've been trying to get some data from the National Survey for Family Growth into R - however, the data is in a .dat file and the data I need doesn't have any spaces or commas separating fields - rather you have to look into the codebook and what number of digits along the line the data you need is. The data I want are the following, where 1,12,int means that the data I'm interested

dom0 CPU pinning and xm weighting
Wondering if I can get some opinions on dom0 CPU pinning and xm weighting. We have several xen servers on SLES11SP1 and up to this point we have never done anything with pinning CPU''s to dom0. We''re trying to decide if we should be doing that. Same goes for xm weighting (if I''m saying that correctly). For example, running the following command when a xen server

xentop batch mode
Hi guys, First of all, sorry to send this one here on the centos ml. I know it's kind of off-topic, but the xen-users list seems a dead end, I was hoping some of you guys are experienced in this. I have a problem with a xen 3.4.2 on Centos 5 x86_64 installation, I need to see the total/used/available memory of dom0 when using xentop, however in batch mode it doesn't seem to work. If I use

libvirt authentication
Hello, I am currently trying to install certificates for tls. By this time I have got some questions: 1) Is documentation in the web docs up-to-date regarding tls server, client, ca certificates? (actually I have some problems, but maybe this is due to smth has changed in certtools and was not updated in docs, perhaps some more fields are needed now). 2) there is a error in virt-pki-validate :

xen 4.1.1 missing veth0 <--> vif0.0 pairs
Hi, I am using Xen 4.1.1 with Linux 3.0.1 kernel. Previously (Xen 3.4.4 and linux kernel 2.6.18) Xen by default created veth0 <--> vif0.0 pair in dom0. With Xen 4.1.1 these pairs are missing in dom0. Using command ''ip link add type veth'' I can create veth0 and veth1 but vif0.0 is still missing in dom0. (When new domU created I can see vif1.x created) Could you please help

Xen 4.0 memory overcommitment
Hello, I am running a functional Xen 4.0 platform. The objective is the project I am currently running is to replace 4 VMWare ESX by 4 Xen 4.0 hypervisors. I have been able to reproduce all the core VMWare features in Xen (but better of course =D) except memory overcommitment. I know this feature has been included since Xen 3.3 but I have found almost no information about it. When I try to

Issue with dom0 xen ballooning
Hi all, I'm having issue with my Centos 5.1 /Xen installation. I'm having some dom0 running 2.6.18-53.1.6.el5xen (x86_64). On the dom0 where the load is high (more than 70% of total system memory consumed by dom0 and domU) we have a lot of "memory squeeze ". The result is that the domU seems to be blocked (no network/no disk acces/ etc....). Looking for a solution in xen

Doubt on XEN memory management: please clarify
Hello, this is a question I wanted to ask you since a long time because there is something not too much clear to me, as regard the memory management in XEN. I don''t want to go too much in deep with such argument, but It''s just to understand what is the best setup for my environment. I know about memory ballooning (http://wiki.xensource.com/xenwiki/XenBestPractices) and the

auto-ballooning crashing Dom0?
Hi, during some experiments with many guests I get crashing Dom0s because of too less memory. Actually the OOM killer goes ''round and kills random things, preferably qemu-dm''s ;-) The box in question has 128GB of memory, I start with dom0_mem=8192M (or 16384M, doesn''t matter). I also used "dom0_mem=8192M,min:1536M", but that didn''t make any

System unusable (hangs) after xm create - xen 4
Hello I have a production server, on which I had to install a new OS. Unfortunately, xen is not willing to run any domUs! Any help would be most highly appreciated. My problem is essentially that described in this post, to which there was no answer at the time: <http://lists.xensource.com/archives/html/xen-devel/2009-06/msg01147.html> Symptoms: When trying to xm create a previously

To receive faxes on a dedicated extention and to forward them to a dedicated e-mail
Hi list, has someone a clear complete and systematic overview over what libs, compiler versions, etc. are really necessary to enable fax receiving and forwarding via e-mail with asterisk and spandsp? As a "non-kernel-hacker" I'm running a bit confused and find it all a bit unclear and not too systematic?! %) It is remarkable how many and various errors can be produced by different

Fwd: cgroup OOM killer loop causes system to lockup (possible fix included)
Hi all, Please find below a complete transcript of the emails between debian/kernel-mm mailing lists. I've had a response back from someone on the deb mailing list stating: ==================================== The bug seems to be that sshd does not reset the OOM adjustment before running the login shell (or other program). Therefore, please report a bug against openssh-server.

Dedicated ROR server and security
Hi all, I am trying to set up a dedicated Ruby on Rails server on Debian Sarge, with Apache 2 and mod_fcgid. There are 2-3 applications on this server, using virtual hosts. For now, everything works fine. However, I would like to secure this a little bit more. What I would like is to prevent one of the web apps to run a shell command to read one of the other app''s source file, or
