Installing Rcplex
Hi, I have tried to install the R package Rcplex on windows xp without success. I have only cplex_studio124.win-x86-32 version. I have modified the makevars.win file as indicated in the installation guide ( http://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/Rcplex/INSTALL ), then I zipped the whole folder to order an installation from a zipped file (utils :menuInstallLocal()) The message I had is file

OT -- What is with all the fragmented threads recently?
Is it my imagination or has there been a huge increase in the number of fragmented threads in the last several days? Maybe it''s Gmail doing something crazy, but I see dozens of top-level conversations starting with replies (ex. "Re: [Rails] omfg something broke"). Did people collectively forget what the "reply" button looks like, or is the list software doing

Can''t run rails
Yesterday, I was having a problem with db:migrate. I was told my version of rails was too old, and I needed to install it from gems instead of the version in my version of Ubuntu. Since then, I''ve done that, and I built ruby 1.8.4 from source and installed it. The installation was to /usr/local/bin. As my distribution had put ruby 1.8.3 in /usr/bin, I renamed that and put a link to

ROracle error at step 1
Hi I Can't connect to the Oracle database, any tips? Has anybody actually got ROracle up and running on windows? >> unable to find an inherited method for function "dbConnect", for signature "OraDriver" I can happily connect to the same database through RODBC. Oracle client, version 9.2 installed, amongst others. Sean > library(DBI) > library(ROracle)

ruby help / if (cond or cond)
Why this code doesn''t work as expected? It raises exceptions everytime. Tried with || operator, too. validates_each :x, :y do |record, attr| record.errors.add (attr, ''between 1 and 100'') if (attr.to_i>100 or attr.to_i<0) end -- They say money can''t buy happiness? OT -- A "HOWTO" is a guide not a question.
This is way offtopic, but I''ve seen this several times recently and it''s annoying me. If you put "HOWTO" in your subject that means that you''re posting a guide on a particular topic. It doesn''t mean that you''re asking a question about "how to" do something. It''s not like it''s a crisis, but it screws up searches

Memory error
I''m using ruby on rails on a Macbook Pro with sqlite3. I''m finding that memory for the ruby process stays about 20mb until I hit an error after which the mermory doesn''t seem to be released and keeps going up until I can''t use my machine. What could be causing this? is it using sqlite3? have I set up rails or ruby wrong? Tim -------------- next part

no one cares about i18n (was [OT]: Asking questions on this list)
Do most others in the community agree with this statement? It seems to me that i18n is: 1. Actually important to many people 2. Not really the difficult to implement in concept 3. Something that people like to point out about Rails to say it''s not ready foir "Enterprise" It seems to be that a big part of Rails is encouraging people to do things the "Right Way",

migrations and SQLite
I read in the instructions of Tracks that "upgrading via the rake migrate command is quite a bit more tricky currently with SQLite and SQLite3". Is there any gotcha regarding migrations and SQLite3? -- fxn

Can I send rendered .html to somewhere besides the web server?
Is there any way to tell Rails to send the .html file it renders somewhere other than the web server? I need to save a page to the server''s file system instead of sending it to the user''s browser. How painful is the 1.0 -> 1.1 upgrade going to be?
Does anyone have a sense for how painful the 1.0 -> 1.1 upgrade is going to be for existing apps? I''m finishing up my first real RoR application with Rails 1.0. I can live with it staying at that level, but I really want to use the has_many :through attribute to clean up some of my code. I''m not particularly interested in edge Rails, mainly because the documentation for

Finding the rhyme for has_many :through
Hi all, I am NOT a person with English as my mother language and I haven''t been programming long enough to be natural in these kind of things. And if that isn''t bad enough, I am a newbie on Rails too... So please enligthen. I am trying to build a simple tool for my shop. I have many products that I sell in my shop and of course I have many suppliers for the products. Thus

scgi?? do i need it for ruby?
This might be obvious to everyone but it is something that i haven''t been able to find an answer to. Do I need to have either scgi/fastcgi/cgi running on either lighttpd/apache for ruby scripts to work? If yes, why? I have installed the scgi server and i can get the service to run, i have also installed the following mod_fastcgi/2.4.2 mod_ruby/1.2.4 Ruby/1.8.2(2004-12-25) mod_scgi,

lighttpd and Apache .. will they play together?
Can someone point me to a tutorial or web example of doing this ... I want to have a site that is normally pure content served via Apache and I want to set up a Rails app on the same box that is served via lighttpd. Now I want the Apache site to be able to retrieve formatted pages for MySQL database queries by the Rails app. I will also be using ActionMailer under the Rails app. How can I

why validation on server side
hi, i have noticed that the validations in RoR happen at server side mostly what sites do is using javascript they validate user information there... whats the point of doing it at the server side is it that loading of javascript file in a browser makes a response to client slow and validation at server side offsets that....????? any sugeestions???? is it that i am missing something as

read-only access to database?
I have a model (Query) which I use to, of all things, query the database. This is to enable raw SQL access. I want to ensure that db access using this model is read-only. Short of checking the sql query for ''insert'' and ''drop'' and ''update'', is there a more rails-like way of doing this in my app/models/query.rb itself? Thanks in advance,

Rewriting with an after_filter
All - I''m completely new to RoR and also new to programming in an MVC structure... The Pragmatic Programmers guide to Rails says, temptingly: "After filters can be used to modify the outbound response, changing the headers and content if required. Some applications use this technique to perform global replacements in the content generated by the controller?s templates (for
