Can''t Install Rails with Ruby Gem Dependencies, OS X
Hello Community:
I''m a brand new user of Ruby on Rails, and am having a great deal of
trouble compiling from source. I''m using the tutorial at
http://hivelogic.com/articles/2005/12/01/ruby_rails_lighttpd_mysql_tiger
to complete the install.
Readline and Ruby installed just fine, and the Ruby Gems appeared to.
But when I tried to sudo gem install Rails --include-dependencies,

Installation on OSX...
Hi,
Just got my first Mac. I''m trying to install rails on it, using the
instructions in the rails wiki:
http://wiki.rubyonrails.com/rails/pages/HowtoInstallOnOSXTigerUsingDarwinPorts
I go to install mysql, and the version of mysql supported by
DarwinPorts appears to be 4.1.18. But all the sites appear to only
have 4.1.19 or 4.1.20. So it looks like DarwinPorts is over a month

Using rsync for buidling Oracle standbys.
Hi,
We currently use rsync to create an Oracle standby on a target box from an existing standby by copying all the datafiles while the source standby is in recovery status. We are occasionally running into datafile corruptions being reported by oracle when it is recovering the new standby. Oracle support says they don't recommend copying files while the changes being applied to them unless

deploying R_o_R to local servers
Hi!
I''m pretty amazed by the features of RoR so far. But, as I come from the
desktop application development, my clients expect to run the magic on
their domain rather on a foreign one. Also I feel uncomfortable giving
away my RoR code to some hosting company, because I''m planning to do a
large application.
As I understand, RoR is designed to run on central web-servers and not

Problem installing on Mac OSX
I tried the instruction tutorial on
http://maczealots.com/tutorials/ruby-on-rails/
and in the middle of trying to install fixrbconfig I got an error:
usr/lib/ruby/1.8/powerpc-darwin8.0/ruby.h does not exist. This probably
means you haven''t yet installed Xcode from the Tiger DVD. You won''t be
able to compile Ruby extensions without it. Please install it then rerun

apache and fcgid
So I decided to just go with apache2 and fcgid. I looked into Mongrel
and apache and I looked into lighttpd and fastcgi and found both to be
too time consuming and not well enough documented for what I''m doing.
My question is, how do I set up apache and fcgid to actually work? I got
apache installed. I think I got fcgid installed (I read somewhere all I
have to do is move the

Beginner Q: Keeping the Ruby on Rails platform up to date.
Hello, I recently installed the ruby on rails framework from this
tutorial:
http://www.hivelogic.com/narrative/articles/ruby_rails_lighttpd_mysql_tiger
So, I installed:
Ruby on Rails 1.1
Ruby 1.8.4
LightTPD 1.4.13
FastCGI 2.4.0
RubyGems 0.9.0
Readline 5.1
PCRE 6.6
FastCGI and MySQL bindings
I figured out how to keep my ruby on rails up to date by using the
command "gem update rails

Anyone tried the recent Mac OS X Security update?
It includes a patch for Ruby. I have already installed 1.8.4 from
source, and updated my PATH to look in /usr/local first, so I don''t
imagine that anything Apple does to "their" copy of Ruby will have any
impact on me, but I''m wondering if the changes to their Ruby is
something that needs to be done to 1.8.4 as well.
Thoughts?

Tunneling in capistrano twice
Hi there,
The default recipe expects you to be able to access your web server
directly from your local machine.
On our web server, for security purposes, it is only possible to ssh
to it through one particular ip (which is also a remote machine.)
The capistrano source is so compact and tidy it looks very hackable.
But rather than messing around I thought I''d ask first if anyone else

Mac setup issue
I just installed an updated set of tools (ruby, rails, etc) under my
home directory for my mac 10.4, since I did not want to disturb the
pre-installed environment in case something in the system relies on
that. The problem I have is that the rake command is still using the
old stack rather than the new one, even though the new rake is there.
I presume the ''rake'' command itself

lighttpd and Apache .. will they play together?
Can someone point me to a tutorial or web example of doing this ...
I want to have a site that is normally pure content served via Apache and I
want to set up a Rails app on the same box that is served via lighttpd. Now
I want the Apache site to be able to retrieve formatted pages for MySQL
database queries by the Rails app. I will also be using ActionMailer under
the Rails app.
How can I

Rails on Tomcat or JBoss?
Hi all,
The Rails book talks about running Rails under Apache, but is there a
(relatively) easy way to deploy it to either Tomcat or JBoss? Is the CGI
servlet the only option?
Thanks,
Ken

large scale paging
Has anyone done any large scale intercom deployments with Asterisk? I've
been asked about building a system to one-way page 500 phones
simultaneously from a single server.
My concerns are:
- My limited math capabilities suggest 41 Mbps of RTP traffic, which
seems like a lot, plus asterisk would be taking a single input stream
and exploding it out to 500 endpoints.
- There are 500
