ROR Recipes Beta
Yesterday I got the beta version of ROR recipes book and the recipes are great. For those of you still thinking about it, I highly recommend the book. The only thing I wish is that if there were some more recipes (greedy me), especially AJAX related and installing an application within your current application. For instance, it will be great to see how one can implement the typo blog

n00b question
Total Ruby N00b here with a question about the Hibbs OnLamp tutorial. I''m trying to hook up to my cookbook database and I''m getting: ActiveRecord::StatementInvalid in Recipe#index Mysql::Error: #42S02Table ''cookbook.recipes'' doesn''t exist: SELECT COUNT(*) FROM recipes RAILS_ROOT: ./script/../config/.. My thoughts: I think I''m not actually

Many-To-Many w/acts_as_tree?
Guys, I''m having a problem getting acts_as_tree working. It seems from the Agile book (p. 255) that acts_as_tree only supports one-to-one record relations, whereas I need many-to-many support. In other words, looking at the picture at the top of page 256 where where only 1 id is linked to 1 parent_id, I need multiple id''s linked to multiple parent_id''s - for

limits of has_and_belongs_to_many
I''m experimenting with Rails on the Recipes example first before I dive into applying it to my intended application. I''m exploring which will be more work: to rename all the primary id''s in the legacy database, or to work around the fact that the primary id''s are not called ''id'' within RoR instead. I''ve been successful in using a

can i access module "files" w/o using client-server?
Hi, I''m new to puppet and trying to get started using it just in local mode. My basic question is: how can i reference a static file within the module (eg in the module''s files/ subdirectory, as described in http://reductivelabs.com/trac/puppet/wiki/ModuleOrganisation). I suppose i could try using a full.absolute path to the file, but that seems to completely defeat the purpose

ROR Recipes Beta: Why use taggings instead of tags_contacts? NoMethodError tag_with?
I have gotten acts_as_taggable to work for a test application as documented on taggable.rubyforge.org I am following Chad''s excellent examples in ROR Recipes Beta book. I have a few questions and hope that Chad or some other expert can help clarify them. 1. Why is the book suggesting to use taggings table instead of tags_contacts, as mentioned on taggable.rubyforge.org?

newbie: OSX Ruby/MySQL issue?
I''m three pages into the OnLamp RoR Tutorial [1] and am wrestling with what appears to be a MySQL connection problem. I''ve created a simple controller called "recipe" with a corresponding "recipes" mysql table. The recipe controller is just a simple scaffold. When I browse to "recipe/new", though, I get these errors: == NoMethodError in

(newbie) Missing Template Error using Rolling With Rails Tutorials
Hi all, New to the list, Ruby, & RoR. I''ve been going through the Rolling With Rails tutorial, but am getting the following error when the instructions tell you to add the @recipes = Recipe.find_all line to the RecipeController: Template is missing Missing template ./script/../config/..//app/views//recipe/index.rhtml The index.rhtml file is right where it''s supposed to

Looking for better code
Hi, I''ve been programming in RoR for about a week or 2-3, and I like it very much. Now, I have a certain problem that is very complicated, well for me at least :-) I have 3 database tables: recipes ingredients and another one which binds the previous 2 tables together Now, I want to have an input form where you can insert 1 recipe and a certain amount of ingredients, say 5. What do

Family Connection 0.9
Family Connection is an easy-to-setup online hub for your family that includes a Family News section, and an Address Book. Currently, there is no documentation on installing the Rails application itself (hence the 0.9 version number). Once installed, Family Connection guides the family website administrator through a simple two-page setup process. The web application restricts access

How should a SelfStart function handle illegal parameter values?
Hi Everyone, I'm trying to write selfStart non-linear models for use with nls. In these models some combinations of parameter values are illegal; the function value is undefined. That's OK when calling the function directly [e.g. SSmodel(x, pars...)]; I return an appropriate non-value such as NA or Inf. However, when called from nls [e.g. nls(y~SSmodel(x, pars...), ...)] those

Troubleshooting "Lost connection to MySQL server.."
Hello all, Though I''ve read all I could about the "Lost connection to MySQL server during query: SHOW FIELDS FROM ...", I''m still unable to use RoR. I''m on Linux Mandriva 2006 / MySQL-4.1.12 / ruby-1.8.2 - The userid/password have access to the database and the table (it''s the root user on MySQL) - I''m on a nonstandard socket/port, but

If @c is an instance for the User class and lets say I want to call @c.pictures, which would be the user''s pictures. How can I setup up RoR so that I could append the condition "status=''available''" to the conditions arguments EVERYTIME .pictures is called. This way I can only call available pictures Is there some kind of filter I can apply to the

NewB questions
Hi, A project came up that has made me realize that it''s time to learn RoR. I''ve got everything up and running (Ruby 1.8.6, Rails 2.1, MySQL 5, Webrick) and am using Aptana with RadRails for development. I''ve installed the "recipes" demo application and have been poking around for the past couple of hours, and now I have a few questions about how things work:

"Rails recipes" vs "Rails cookbook"
Reviews Wanted. I''ve read the tables of contents and haven''t yet made up my mind. Is one book clearly better than the other? Is one clearly full of bugs? Is one so much further ahead that there is no choice? Are they both so incomplete that I should just wait and only cook real food? Do trains still have dining cars? Need advice on RoR app design
Fellow Railers, Is there anything, anywhere, that I can read that discusses overall RoR app design? I have the Agile RoR book, which is great for learning the details of RoR, but unfortunately doesn''t cover the overall issue of creating a large, complex RoR app. My staff and I are still in the process of getting up to speed on Ruby and RoR, but we also need to begin thinking about

How to List Records in Descending Order?
I am brand-new to RoR and have only followed and replicated the few tutorials that are out there. I have searched and searched, but cannot find an answer to this simple question: How can you list records in descending order? I have the cookbook example loaded, but can''t seem to list the recipes in reverse order (by the primary key - id). Thanks ahead of time for any and all help. --
