Problems with Sunfire X2200
Hello all!
We are testing virtualization with two Sun X2200 M2 (2 x Opteron Dual Core)
with Xen (3.1.3, locally compiled, Debian etch), KVM (Debian Sid) and
Windows Virtual Server
(Windows 2003 Server). We have tried paravirtualization and also full
virtualization (Pacifica).
In all cases we have experienced problems regarding stability in the
systems,

Opteron in 32-bit mode
I'm spec-ing a development server for some Haskell hackers. In
particular, they need to be able to build and run the Glasgow Haskell
Compiler (ghc), the x86_64 port of which isn't quite there yet.
My current thought is to get an Opteron-based system, but load it
(initially, at least) with the 32-bit i386 version of CentOS. That buys
me near-term ghc compatibility. In the future,

Raid / dual Opteron power issues
Hi All,
I've just started caring for a dual Opteron machine. It has a 3Ware
9500S-12 RAID controller, a Tyan S2882G3NR motherboard, 10 IBM 400GB
disk drives, and a 650 watt power supply.
It has been behaving itself quite nicely until recently. The poor
behavior started when I upgraded the OS from CentOS 4.1 (32 bit) to
Centos 4.1 (x86_64). When running in uniprocessor mode, the system

Dual Opteron or Dual Xeon?
I am about to lease another server to be a backup web/mail server with a
replicated mysql database. The current live server is a dual Xeon
2.8Ghz. Would I do better to get another Xeon server or an Opteron
based server? My concerns are compatibility of the database and the SSL
certificate currently running on the Xeon machine. Are these concerns
unfounded?
TIA

Opteron, Athlon/64, and disaster recovery
Has anybody here taken a HDD configured with an Opteron system, and then put
it into an Athlon/64 and had it work?
Are they interchangeable, like an Athlon/32 and a P3/P4?

R on AMD64 (Opteron)
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has had good experiences using R on Linux with dual AMD64 (Opteron) processors. I'm thinking of buying a couple of such servers, but I'd like to make sure R would work fine.
The "R Installation and Administration" guide notes that there may be some problems with BLAS libraries. That's all I could find about R on AMD64.
Please share your

Opteron + Nvidia + Centos 4.2 i386 = Thud
Dear All,
Just returned from vacation and was delighted to see that Centos 4.2 is now on
the mirrors. Unfortunately the new i386 version is giving us problems on our
dual Opteron workstations with Nvidia graphics cards...
Basically, nine times out of ten, the boxes will hang when they try to re-load
X... and just sit there with the keyboards Caps and Scroll lock LED's
flashing. The only

xen, VT and an OS from Redmond
Hi there
We''re planning to buy a new server with a PentiumD with VT.
Unfortunately we have some legacy server software which runs on Windows
only and for that reason I have to install WindowsXP under Xen3.
The problem is that I didn''t find too much documentation (tutorials,
howtos, whatever) which describes installation and experiences with
WinXP, besides some problem

R on Linux/Opteron?
Dear R-help:
Has anyone tried using R on the the AMD Opteron in either 64- or 32-bit
mode? If so, any good/bad experiences, comments, etc? We are considering
getting this hardware, and would like to know if R can run smoothly on such
a beast. Any comment much appreciated.
Best,
Andy

athlon64/opteron 8GB per CPU
I'm putting together a spec for a big(ger) memory x86_64 host, and I hope some
of you-all can help. I'm looking for success stories of hardware that folks
are using in production environments, preferably with CentOS 4, with more than
4GB of memory per CPU.
I know there are lots of mobos out there that can do this, but I'm looking for
what folks really have running. Call me

Opteron Mobo Suggestions
I've been planning to build a dual Opteron server for awhile. I'd like
to get people's suggestions on a suitable motherboard.
I've looked at the Tyan K8SE (S2892) and K8SRE (S2891) but would like to
find more Linux-specific experiences with these boards.
Some features I expect are at least 4 SATA (SATA-300?) ports, serial
console support in the BIOS, USB 2.0 and IEEE-1394

Some timings for 64 bit Opteron (ATLAS, GOTO, std)
Hi Martin,
When I attended the LinuxWorld Expo in NYC back in January, I chatted with
some folks at the AMD booth, as well as guys from Penguin Computing (where
we bought our Opteron box). I was told that the Operton has this somewhat
strange setup that the memory is controlled by one CPU. The net effect of
this being that when both CPUs are running, one might only be running at
around 90%

Experience with Xen & AMD Opteron 4200 series?
Hey,
I am currently considering a two machine Xen setup based on AMD Opterons,
more precisely Dell R515s or R415s with dual Opteron 4274HE.
Does anyone has some Xen setup(s) running on top of Opterons 4274HE,
Opteron 4200 or Dell R515 machines and is willing to share some experience?
In particular, I am interested in using Debian squeeze (Xen 4.0.1, Linux
2.6.32) for dom0 and most domUs.

Opteron vs Xeon?
Hi
I'm setting up a SIP gateway, serving quite a few potential users, and
I wonder if I should purchase a Opteron or Xeon based system. Xeon has
it's HT, but is it worth it? Has anyone tested Opteron on asterisk?
Does it work well?

Opteron Hardware with Asterisk
Anyone running Asterisk on dual Opteron Server? Are there any special
issues in a 64 bit environment and what is the capacity curve like?
