problem starting domains
I''m trying to start a number of lvm-backend domUs on a Dell Poweredge 2850 (i''ve got nousb on the grub command line, and no usb in the kernel). Some domUs are created and started successfully. However, quite a few of my domUs don''t start properly. I get the correct Started Domain messages... but then the domain doesn''t "go anywhere", meaning

Xen virtual interface settings
I''ve been mucking with xen for quite a while but recently started focusing on custom network setups. I''d like to be able to create VMs on the fly from a base image and set network settings in each without booting the image up. This strange setup is for a classroom environment. At the beginning of the quarter the instructor would run a script that creates all the

Backing up glusterfs files using LVM snapshot
Hi, We have recently set up bacula to backup our databases and some local storages on some machines. For backing up the files that we keep on GlusterFS, we plan to directly take a snapshot of the ext3 file system (which is exported by the glusterfs server) and then backup this snapshot using bacula. I have following questions in this regard: 1. Are there any potential pitfalls of accessing the

How to select a rootfs to test job test-amd64-amd64-xl on my own machine ?
Hi All I try to test flight 12785 job test-amd64-amd64-xl on my own machine. I download kerndist.tar.gz , dist.tar.gz and xendist.tar.gz from logfiles generated by job build-amd64-pvops and build-amd64. But there is no clue on how to get a root file system. So I try Ubuntu 11.10 as its rootfs, which is ext3 format. Unfortunately, it complains the <The disk drive for / is not ready yet or

vif-route issue with HVM domU only
Hi, I seem to have an interesting issue with vif-route. This is after an update to Xen 4.2.1, switching from xm to xl. I have 10 PV domUs on the host and two FreeBSD ones. All the PV domUs are now working nicely. Since FreeBSD has always been just slightly broken as PV I chose a HVM domU for those, but with PV drivers. Those PV drivers all blew up now after the upgrade. I''m now trying

Package Distribution Server?
Dear List, I'm trying to set up a lab with multiple workstations running CentOS 5. Does anybody knows how to keep the packages in sync among workstations? Ideally I want any change made on any machine be able to applied to all other machines. Alternatively, to "push" the changes (add and/or remove packages) from one central server to all other machine is also fine. Thanks

OT: backing up lvm2 xen disks
Hi all, I need to backup two xen server hosts with several lvm partitions to store xen guests data (all guests are para-virtualized CentOS guests). My intention it is to do a full backup of lvm2 partition where SO resides ( I don't have created lvm2 partitions with snapshot option). Will this procedure works? To backup - dd if=/dev/sysvol/vol01 of=backup.img to restore on another

updating puppetlabs-firewall forge module to line up with whats in the github repo?
Hi there! Is there a timeline on when the puppetlabs-firewall forge module will be updated (not necessarily to 1.0) ? the github version has the firewallchain type (as well as other nifty) that the forge version seems to be lacking, but it''s not clear from my perusing that the two are different. They both appear to be the same version superficially*…. The github version points to the

Report to a domU a change on a disk
Hello, I have a Xen dom0 (Debian Etch running xen 3.0.3) running different domUs. DomUs'' disks are LVM2 volumes. Now I have increased the size of one of these LVM volumes so I have to inform to the corresponding domU that its disk has increased its size (to resize it without unmounting it). How can I do this? -- Angel L. Mateo Martínez Sección de Telemática Área de Tecnologías de la

How to merge the Xen kernel with modules into one single file ?
Hi all, To boot a Xen from grub, we normally use a Xen kernel and a domain0 kernel & initrd.img as its modules. Now, I want to merge these three files into one single kernel file, then I can boot it without modules. I am doing this because a simulator environment only has one file entry for the kernel. Do you guys have some hints on how to do that? BTW, I can merge the domain0 kernel &

Block device caching causes out of memory in dom0
We run our dom0''s with 128MB of RAM using xen 2.0.6, kernel 2.6.11 for dom0 and domUs, and typically have ~10 domUs per server. All the domU filingsystems are loopback files served from dom0 using the file method. We''ve found that really busy servers sometimes get out of memory problems on dom0. This appears as lots of x-order memory allocation failures with a variable

How to test my patch before I post it to public?
Hi , All I 'm a green hand and interested in open source development. I have a general question “How to test my patch before I post it to public?” Hope you guys give me some suggestions. : ) Firstly, I can re-compile the code, to assure no syntax error. However,I don't know how to test my patch's function is right or not. Some software requires unit test for each function. Is there

Backing up "live" Xen systems?
I''ve been testing Xen for a few weeks now and am just about to put it into production use. (I wrote some scripts to create Debian images easily; the tools are included in Debian Sid as "xen-tools".) The only thing troubling me at the moment is backing up the virtual instances. I''m looking to run about four virtual systems upon a host. If the physical host

I hope you don''t my posting this to both xen-users and linux-lvm simultaneously, but i figured it''d help keep the solution in one place... even though it''ll be the same across two places... Backing up Xen DomU''s - Tape Drive - LVM
Hi, I am planning the roll out of a Xen dom0 running CentOS that is going to be running two DomU''s CentOS and Windows 2003 SBS. I am planning on using LVM for the disks as this (so i have read) increases i/o performance compared to image files. I need a solution to back up these machines and I have came up with the following two ideas: Idea 1, Backup the machines as images (lvm

Xen 4.1 compile from source and install on Fedora 17
Hello, I am relatively new to Xen and need help compiling and installing Xen from source. Using some tutorials online, I have got Xen working with the ''yum install xen'' method. I used virt-manager and was able to get 2 domUs working ( CentOS 5, and Fedora 16). My domUs reside on Logical Volumes in an LVM, on a second hard disk sda2, while my dom0 is installed on sda1.
