Best practices with Web Services
Hello-- I''m investigating the API facet of my site and wanted to ask a couple questions: 1. The Agile book describes adding an API using the web_services generator which adds stuff to app/api. In Rails 1.1, Jamis added some wants.xml stuff to the controller code which also allows API generation. Which is better to use now? Do they mutually exclude one another? 2. In some cases, I

layered SOAP webservices
Hi all, My SOAP web service works with direct and delegated dispatching. But as soon as I switch to layered, I get an error message no such web service ''api'' Now, the actionwebservice/lib/action_web_service/protocol/ soap_protocol.rb, in function decode_action_pack_request(action_pack_request), service_name = action_pack_request.parameters[''action'']

Rails + SOAP ?
Hello- I have a Rails web app that is database-centric (go figure). What I would like to do is expose certain parts of this database to an application running on a Windows box (or whatever). For the moment, let''s consider the read-only case, but authentication will be required. Is SOAP what would be used for something like this? Are there better alternatives? The existing

Trouble connecting to a Rails SOAP web service with a simple Ruby client

It working just fine through the Rails web service scaffold invoke http://localhost:3000/ProductBackend/invoke I''m trying to write a plain ruby command line client to access the webservice. require ''soap/rpc/driver'' proxy = SOAP::RPC::Driver.new("http://localhost:3000/product_backend",

accessing a SOAP based web service from R
Hi, I have a number of web services that run on a server and can be accessed via SOAP as well as by creating a specific URL. Now, for certain services, the argument that I need to send is about 10 to 20 characters and the URL approach works fine. However if the argument is a few kilobytes I would rather create a SOAP packet and send that off. So my first question is: is there a package that

SOAP Web Service Exception
I am working on building a prototype for a Rails Web Service that will be used potentially by non-ruby/rails languages. When testing using the *invoke* scaffold I have no problem getting the correct result, however when using a 3rd party PHP client I get a *NoMethodError (undefined method `collect'' for #<SOAP::SOAPNil:0x24ea1bc>):* exception from the rails Webrick web server.

ActionWebService: associations unavailable in SOAP response
I have create a web service to expose data from my application and am wondering why the associations are not showing up as values in my WSDL or SOAP response. In active record I have enabled eager loading so that the object set as the return type for the service call has all the associated data prior to the response. However, the associations are not showing up. Anyone have any ideas? I can

Web Service with no value returned
In the Agile Web Devopment with Rails book, it says (p 427) that omitting the :returns option from a web service api, the method will "return nothing to the caller". However, I have written a test and invoked it from the browser. It says "return value nil" but XML response: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?> <env:Envelope

Web Services/Invoke Inconsistencies
Hey all, Got a bit of a long one here, so bear with me while I try to hash out the details... better to give too much than not enough. So we''re using the ActionWebService in order to communicate with a 3rd-party software client. We''ve created the API as discussed in Agile Web Development, and, in fact, invoke actually works perfectly. We have three example XML posts... they

SOAP for large datasets
I''ve been playing around with a soap interface to an application that can return large datasets (up to 50mb or so). There are also some nested structures for which I''ve used ActionWebService::Struct with 2-3 nested members of oher ActionWebService::Struct members. In addition to chewing up a ton of memory, cpu ulilization isn''t that great either. My development

Web Services -- authentication?
I''ll be implementing a WS backend to an application which requires user authentication to login. Can this same authentication method (based on the salted hash login generator) be used to authenticate web service access? Or, should some other authentication method be used? i.e. each user must retrieve an authentication token manually before setting something up to use web services.

Web service SOAP URLs started failing with 1.1.4 or using 1.1.2 security patch
Railers, I''m trying to figure out why invocations to my Web service URLs work with Rails 1.1.2 but fail both with Rails 1.1.4 (and 1.1.5) and when I apply the new 1.1.2 security patch to Rails 1.1.2. It looks like they are failing with SOAP clients but succeeding with XML-RPC clients. The URL that used to work is of the form http://localhost:3000/my_controller/ServiceName/api. When I

Rails as SOAP client with .NET web service
Hi For an application we need to obtain data from a .NET based web service. I''ve been "playing" with some sample code to invoke web services as a soap client. They work ok with services that offer a .wsdl link. However, .NET based services are called with "*.asmx?WSDL". The wsdlDriver (I guess SOAP4R) barfs on this. Anybody have practical experience and willing/able

Web Service (server) and file_column issues
Hi there, I''m having some issues with using SOAP and file_column. The Web service I created is pretty straight forward. It gets the 5 most recently updated members from the database. Nothing too spectacular. However, the Members class uses file_column and when I try to connect to my web service I get this error: TypeError in Connect to serviceController#display_recent_updates Do

rails - web service - method name formatting problem
Hi all, I''m using AWS to consume a web service written in Java. I set up the API class with: api_method :extractName, :expects => [{:arg0 => :string}], :returns => [:string] Note the lowercase ''e'' of the method name - (because the service is written in Java :)) My problem is that when this goes out across http, it becomes formatted as
