Validation errors in has_one/belongs_to relationships.
I have two objects, QuoteInput and Insured.
QuoteInput has one Insured and Insured belongs to QuoteInput.
I don''t understand what I''m seeing.
I assign an Insured to a QuoteInput. The Insured object has invalid
data.
I call save! on the quote input. QuoteInput has no validations.
I expect two things to happen - 1) an exception should be thrown,
indicating that there was a

does has_many: add a has_<associated_class>? method
Hi,
I have a Country class which has_many: regions. At the same time, the
corresponding countries table has a boolean column named has_regions.
It happens that when I try to access that attribute using
country_instance.has_regions? , I can see in the logs that Rails is
querying the database with a SELECT that''s counting the regions in that
country. Obviously, that''s

HABTM: Find sorted by number of associations
Hi,
I''ve been googling and searching the forums for some time
but can''t seem to find exactly what I''m looking for.
Suppose User HABTM Products (for example a favorites list). I would like to
construct a single query for finding Products ordered by the number of
Users that have flagged them as favorites.
Although I can construct the query using SQL a with a

validations with associated object
Does anyone know if Rails is supposed to validate associated objects on
creation?
Say you have a User model, with has_many posts, and a Post model which
belongs_to user. Further, the Post model has a validates_uniqueness_of
:title.
u = User.find(1)
# this should pass
u.posts.create :title => ''my new post title''
# this should fail
u.posts.create :title => ''my

Noob: Child records not saved
Hi all,
happily coding along, but it seems a belongs_to record is not saved.

@project_contact = ProjectContact.new(@params[''collect''])
@project.project_contact = @project_contact

More than one has_many :through association between the same 2 models
I wonder if you can have more than one has_many :through association between
2 models.
For example...
I have a model Teacher and a model Class
Now, 1 Teacher works in many Classes, right?. So I need a join model like
class Work < ActiveRecord::Base
belongs_to :teacher
belongs_to :class
end
But I also would like to know if a teacher CAN teach a class before I

has_many_polymorphs and acts_as_list ?
First, BRAVO for this wonderful plugin: has_many_polymorphs ! Now my
problem:
4 models : Collection, Page, Fragment, Belonging (which is the join
table):
1 class Collection <
ActiveRecord::Base
2 has_many_polymorphs :elements,
3 :through => :belongings,
4 :from => [:pages, :fragments, :collections],
5 :as => :collector,
6 :parent_order =>

Why does belongs_to handle "conflicts" this way?
When you define belongs_to in a model, you can either access
association or association_id. I was wondering how Rails would handle
things if you set each one to be different.
I made two simple models:
class Foo < ActiveRecord::Base; end
class Bar < ActiveRecord::Base
belongs_to :foo
end
Now here''s a script/console session.
>> f = Foo.create
=> #<Foo:0x270ec10

Should counter_cache fields be saved in the database?
As far as I can tell, the counter_cache option on a belongs_to model
doesn''t actually save anything in the database. For example, I have
the following models:
class Parent < ActiveRecord::Base
has_many :children,
:conditions => "deleted_at IS NULL"
end
class Child < ActiveRecord::Base
belongs_to :parent, :counter_cache => true
end
With the following

Multiple polymorphic belongs_to declarations
I have the following models:

belongs_to :deck
belongs_to :front, :polymorphic => true
belongs_to :back, :polymorphic => true
end
class TextContent < ActiveRecord::Base
has_one :card, :as => :front
has_one :card, :as => :back
end
The conflicting has_one declarations don''t work. What I need is

Can I execute DML from within Rails?
Is it possible to execute a DML statement against a MySQL database from
within Rails? I have a table I''m using for batch processing. It needs to be
truncated to reset the primary key before each batch insert statement. I
looked at the API here:
http://api.rubyonrails.com/classes/ActiveRecord/ConnectionAdapters/DatabaseStatements.html#M000532
and didn''t notice anything that

custom sql queries beyond CRUD
Hi,
I am just starting of in rails. I am trying to understand the features
of rails and I have this burning question. (and search is not available
now):
Apart from relying on the automatic CRUD sql script produced, is there a
way I can create my own sql script ex: with many joins between exixting
tables (for reporting ). All I need is to declare the custom query and
place the result in a

spec a replace_html with a partial
I wanted to use ARTS to add RJS in a behaviour driven way to my
application, but I''m having some trouble asserting a replace_html with
a partial.
I''ve created a pastie (http://pastie.caboo.se/60694) which contains
the RJS I want to spec, the spec which I already wrote and its failure
message.
I''m currently using RSpec-0.9.2

Active Record question, orphaned children
I have a Deck object and a Card object with their corresponding tables. (You
know a deck of cards.) When I destory a Deck it leaves orphaned cards in
the database. Is there a way to set up the objects with ActiveRecord so that
when a parent object is destoryed the child objects are destroyed as well?
My code below.
class Deck < ActiveRecord::Base
has_many :cards
end
class Card <

counter_cache, has_many and belongs_to
I am a bit confused about counter_cache here. The API docs
http://api.rubyonrails.org/classes/ActiveRecord/Associations/ClassMethods.html
say that only the belongs_to association can take the :counter_cache
option. When I try to use it on a has_many I get an "unknown key(s):
counter_cache" error.
Why would this be the case? belongs_to means that this model has a
field with an id

newbie question: Mapping Collections
Hi,
Day 3 with rails here. Forgive me. If this has been covered many times
before, pls just point me at the article.
I worked through the Rolling with Rails tutorial
(http://www.onlamp.com/pub/a/onlamp/2005/01/20/rails.html) built up my
cookbook. Things work great.
I now want to add Ingredients to my app. So, a Recipe will have 1 or

Bug in rails ?
Hi !
I just have a simple question.
I am writing an app using rails to familiarize myself with the framework (which is pretty cool, by the way).
I just wanted to know why these two work differently (since "find" should be a synonym for "detect" according to the Pick Axe) :
current_item = @invoice.line_items.detect {|i| i.product.id == key}
current_item =

Errors object missing when saving AR in Web Services method
Hello,
I''m not able to get Errors object when saving some Model instance in
ActionWebService::Base subclass.
I want to create API method that will return ID of the object when saved
successfully. When validation fails and the object is not saved I''d like
the method to return ID, as well as the array of ValidationError custom
struct. But I cannot fill in this because unsaved
