Custom kinit to find device by "label"
I need to reliably boot a server from a USB device. Since USB device ordering can be unpredictable, I wrote a simple early-userspace "init" program to find the root FS on the correct USB device & partition. I have "labeled" the root ext2 FS on the USB drive, and the program searches for the label by examining the bytes at a specific offset from the beginning of the

Journal Aborts in VMware ESX (Filesystem Corruption)
I have several CentOS5 hosts in a VMware ESX 3.5.0 226117 environment using iSCSI storage. Recently we've begun to experience journal aborts resulting in remounted-read-only filesystems as well as other filesystem issues - I can unmount a filesystem and force a check with "fsck -f" and occasionally find errors. I've found -

Ext3 and LFS - possible? fatal?
Has anyone tried LFS (ie >2G files support) and Ext3 together? Are there good reasons why this should/should not work? I see the RH enterprise kernel patch set specifically does not attempt both lfs and ext3, but the lfs patches themselves touch some reasonably localised parts of ext2, so I would hope (without having dived in there to test), that the ext3 changes would mirror that

plug leaks in febootstrap
Hi Rich, I ran coverity against febootstrap's head and it spotted four leaks. This fixes them. The first patch plugs three. The second attempts to make the add_link function do what I'm guessing it was intended to do. As is, it was a no-op. >From 7c2ff55613598a1295e213cef36600ad61da7ed6 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Jim Meyering <meyering at redhat.com> Date: Tue, 10 Jan 2012

filesystem remounted as read only
Hi, I'm running kernel 2.6.8-15, lvm2 v2.01.04-5 and acl v2.2.23-1 on a Sunblade 100 (sparc). In a few months we have experienced for several times that an ext3 filesystem is remounted as read-only (this is due to the option "errors=remount-ro" in /etc/fstab). Sometimes there is no error in log files but sometimes we see: kernel: init_special_inode: bogus i_mode (3016) kernel:

Download to ext3 partition stalls (sans HTML crap)
(Sorry about the duplicated mails, my mailer stinks.) Hi ext3-gurus, I was doing some testing of our 100 Mbit ethernet at work, and found a weird problem which appears to be ext3 releated as far as I can tell. The test is very simple. I use ncftp to connect to another machine running vsftpd and download a very large file over the network. The network is switched, and I get 8-10 MB/s transfers

FW: Echo on incoming calls (PRI->SIP) but not on outgoing (SIP->PRI) (no html crap, sorry)
Hello all! We have an E400P on a dual Xeon box with four EuroISDN PRI to the PSTN and Cisco ATA-186 as SIP UA. We experience very large amount of echo (on -some- calls) when we're doing PRI->SIP calls but not when doing SIP->PRI calls. We don't think the problem is IP latency related (When calls are made PRI->*->PRI we still experience the echo). What do you think?

Voipbuster/voipstunt -- what a crap service
Hi, all I am reallty pissed with their service. I wonder if this is common problem. Firstly, all of my calls are terminated after 30s. And termination happens in a strange way. My local asterisk server does not see the disconnection, but remote party is disconnected. Basically, I am still on the phone, while remote party was disconnected. When I hang up, I get something like that: Apr 20

FS corruption? bogus i_mode
Hello, I am doing some testing on a PXA270 based processor (on a single board computer) which makes the processor vulnerable to bit flips. One such bit flips seems to have corrupted the file system. The debug port on the board (it is a single board computer) had the following message when i think the FS corruption occured : <7>init_special_inode: bogus i_mode (33061) init_special_inode:

Problem with ext3 filesystem
Hey, I've a problem with an ext3 filesystem and don't know how to fix it or find the failure :( The Hardware: Tyan mainboard, AMD Athlon CPU, ARECA ARC-1120 RaidController Raid5 with 400GB Seagate HD's, 756 MB Ram, other harddisks for system, network and avm isdn controller. Couse of the filesystem problems I run memtest and found one bad memory module which I replaced yet. The
