Incremental Backups
I read the following hint at: http://www.mikerubel.org/computers/rsync_snapshots/#Incremental mv backup.0 backup.1 rsync -a --delete --link-dest=../backup.1 source_directory/ backup.0/ I simply want to maintain a dated backup of a server so that I could always go back to a certain date. I would like to keep this structure for each day for the last seven days, then one weekly snapshot for

Latency and Rsync Transfers
Hello, Working a few servers that are transferring data across country with a 75ms delay on a GIGE connection. We can tune the tcp buffers on linux to improve the connections using iperf. Does rsync use the tcp buffers of the OS or does it override these settings? Thanks, Neal -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL:

rsync snapshot problem deleting files
Well, I followed this link: http://www.mikerubel.org/computers/rsync_snapshots/ and implemented it (with a bit of tweaking) on my home network. It is used to make snapshots of two Windows PC's over samba. On one of the machines (and not the other, from what I can tell) it deletes files from the target machine for no good reason (ie. they still exist on the source machine). Then, if I run

Force destination files to specific owner/group
Folks-- I'm working with an old system I set up to copy files from one local directory to another. I was using rdist for this, but I would prefer to shift it over to rsync. The one thing I'm missing is the trivial ability to force the group owernship of the destination files to a specific group. A read through the manpage and various searches on the web do not turn up any helpful hints

rsync huge tar files
Hi folks, Are there any tricks known to let rsync operate on huge tar files? I've got a local tar file (e.g. 2GByte uncompressed) that is rebuilt each night (with just some tiny changes, of course), and I would like to update the remote copies of this file without extracting the tar files into temporary directories. Any ideas? Regards Harri

command line to backup my documents to external drive
I'm really confused with all the examples out there and all different types of incremental backups. I tried several scripts but cannot reduce the size of my backup folders. What I want is to backup my documents to my external drive every month and save as much disk space as possible. Lets say I have 3 backup directories in the external drive, backup03.10, backup04.10 and backup05.10. I want

Xen and ReiserFS
I am unable to boot Dom0 on a machine with Reiser file systems. Reiser support is built into the xen0 kernel. I have similar setup with ext3 file systems working just fine, so I don''t think it is a setup problem. I have tried booting with and without and initrd file, booting with the original Linux distro initrd file, etc, but nothing seems to work. I recall seeing a thread about ReiserFS

gzip-rsyncable.diff
Hi, I currently create large (500MB-2.5GB) tar.gz files that I am trying to get to rsync better. After doing some research by reading a lecture presented by the original author of rsync and googling the list archives, I have concluded that the gzip-rsyncable.diff is the best way to get gzipped files to rsync nicely. The only version I could find of this patch is available here:

Linux R / Windows client
Hello, I am currently running R on ubuntu and everything is working perfectly fine. However, I would like to connect to R via Windows using Eclipse StatEt plugin. Is this possible to do? or do I have to have a version of R running on Windows also? I prefer to have Linux do the heavy lifting and Windows Eclipse to be a sort of GUI. Any thoughts?

RSync with File Compression
Hello, Rsync is great, thanks to all who work on it. Does anyone have any good strategies for keeping the backups on the remote side compressed on disk? I'm under the impression that gzipping the files would not work as they would not be available to rsync in the uncompressed state for subsequent backups. A compressed filesystem would be prefect, but the only references I could find was for

rsync feature request: conditional compression
rsync is optimized to conserve network resources, sometimes at the expense of CPU resources. As long as CPU's are fast and networks are slow, rsync with compression does a great job. However, if I run rsync on a slow box (166MHz Ultra SPARC) over a fast network (100Mb/s), the compression kills the transfer rate. I turned compression off and I should be done rsyncing my files (60GB)

Possible bug with multiport?
Hi Folks: I am either using the multiport of the -m or --match option of iptables in correctly or there is a bug with it. Is anyone else using it with no problem? This is the way I am trying to use it: my_ports=21,25,80 iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i $wan_addr -p tcp -m multiport --dports $my_ports -j DNAT --to $my_internal_address I have used this in the past successfully but that was a

File Systems - Which one to use?
We are looking at implementing a Linux box running samba in the near future with about 1TB of disk online. The purpose of this box will be for basic file and printer sharing needs. I am doing research on the different journaling file systems avaible in RH 7.3 and up (ext3, reiserFS, and JFS) and was wondering if anyone has had any real world experience with them (mostly reiserFS and JFS) and

Samba on ReiserFS
Dear Listmembers, I try to work with samba (newest rpm for SuSE, 3.0.1.pre2, but that does not matter, the effect was there in 2.2.7 and 2.2.8a too) on an sufficient armed system (the system does not matter either, I have tried it on different machines) using ReiserFS (version 3.6.4-12). When accessing one share from one machine (i.e. copying two or more files at a time to or from the share)

Ext3 vs. Reiser?
Hi! I was just wondering how Ext3 and Reiserfs compare. When I reinstalled my server (because of a stupid hacker) I took the opportunity to change to ReiserFS. And I have to say it's really much faster than Ext3. I don't have benchmarks, but for example, stuff like "make dep" on the linux kernel is much faster (even though I had enabled write cache when I was using ext3). So
